Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle

2003-03-29 Thread Mark Miconi

Mike and all the others that went to
Chicago,

I want to thank you all for your attempts and to
say that this will bite the asses of all that have pieces that want too much for
them.

Let the idiots have there day and think they are
going to be rich. Let the museums show their true colors and disappoint those
that think they are going to get rich by selling to the museums. Do not let this
crap get you mad.

I predict that in a month or so this stuff will
show up on ebayat first for way too much, then the price will drop. As long
as some of our members have some samples they will be able to tell the rest of
us if it is real when it hits ebay.

In the past couple of years on the antiques road
show a man from Tucson had an Indian Chief Blanket on there...valued at
$500,000.00+ dollars. My wife and I buy and sell alot of native american
blankets. After that blanket aired on the Roadshow every blanket we saw at sales
was priced through the roof whether it was native american or made in mexico. We
tried to explain to the sellers the differences and they all got mad, said they
would rather "donate" to the Heard Museum or what they termed "real" collectors
and get the tax break then sell too cheap. Everyone thought they would get rich.
For a while you couldn't touch the blankets. We left our cards with everyone and
just left them to their own devices.
Well then the bubble popped, the museums told them
what they had were not the geniune items, and many that were genuine were not
"Chief" blankets which are truly rare. Soon after the bubble popped we were bak
to buying blankets for what they were worthand we did have the satisifaction
of telling those that were truly rude to shove their blankets were the sun don't
shine.

My point is that these morons with stones that
listened to the other morons say it was worth $500 an ounce will soon find out
that they can't sell it for that and the museum is not about to pay that much
and will be looking to sell the stuff. Afterall, all the museums I have ever
dealt with have "limited" budgets. It is not like this is a lunar, how much of
it will they actually want to buy? And if you factor in all the "wrongs" that
will show up which will probably be 5 times more than the real thing the museum
will close shop quickly enough.

You guys that went there to get the stuff deserve a
huge thanks from all of us for trying. It will show up sooner or later. When
people think they have a treasure that will make them rich they are always
anxious to get the money. When they find out they are not millionaires they will
sell, and then you will be in the driver seat.

Hopefully there will be plenty for sale
soon

Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle

2003-03-29 Thread almitt
Hi List,

Mike Farmer mentioned the specimens being worth $500.00 an ounce but when we were in
the library asking around one of the ladies there told us they were worth $2,000.00 an
ounce ($73.00/ gram) so it keeps going up in price. People in that area need to really
get a grip on this one. There has to be lots of material around, including some that
people haven't come across yet. This looks to be like an LL6 as others have mentioned.
It is an ordinary chondrite and a quick look on dealer sites on the internet or if you
wish ebay, those items don't usually sell for much more than $2 or $3 a gram (except
in low total weight falls). What's a fair price?? I think the guy that sold to Steve
W. for $1.00 got a good deal as well as Steve got a reasonable purchase. No one got
ripped off.

but if little is bought it becomes a significant addition to the purchase of
the meteorite. Some are also full time dealers so they not only have to get

So is $7 for a stone bought for $1 fair? It all depends, and one of the

[meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle - whats a fair price?

2003-03-29 Thread Robert Verish
Hold on a minute, guys!

What's all this talk about $7/g?
Don't forget that Farmer had to PAY $7/g for most of
those premium specimens that had hit a house. We're
not going to see those meteorites going for $7/g.

No doubt Michael would like to comment on this thread
but right now he's out in the field searching for more
of this meteorite, so let's not go too far with this
thread until those more closely involved can
participate.

I'm only aware of 1 stone that was acquired for ~$1/g.
And that was the one bought by Steve Witt soon after
he arrived on the scene. Not long after that prices
started to vary greatly.

And that particular stone won't be going on the market
any time soon. Steve gave permission to have that
stone sent to a lab in Washington - in order to have a
short-lived radionuclide count performed on it. As
you may already know, this is an analysis that
researchers are VERY keen to conduct on any VERY
recently fallen meteorite. It is preferred to have
this test done within hours of the fall! And Steve
handed over his stone within 24 hours of having
recovered it. It was the 2nd freshest specimen made
available for this count.

Steve Witt is not a meteorite dealer. Like the rest
of us, he is a collector and is trying to do the
right thing and is attempting to help in the recovery
of a fall that occurred in his neighborhood. He is a
member of a nationwide group called Bolide_Chasers.
He was interviewed by local TV media and performed a
public service by supplying (good) information to the
general public and directing meteorite finders to the
local sheriff station. He lent his specimens from the
fall for use in other media presentations. He lent
his largest specimen for analysis.

And for all his volunteer efforts, he was nearly
arrested!

Sorry, but I'm not very good at figuring out the
dollar value of a new meteorite. But I'm sure it
probably varies for each individual finder, and for
each individual stone.

Hello,

Several other stones were purchased for about $1.00 per gram. Approx weight
maybe around 3 kilos. However these went straight into personal collections!
On a funny note many stones were turned away from several buyers at
$1.00 per gram because it was believed that there were going to be 100's of
kilos. NOT! Next day,
the buyers tried to buy those stones at the $1.00 price per gram and were
laughed atby then it was $10.00 per gram...thanks to the police and
museum.

Heck that is cheap considering all things.

Without getting into an argumentthere are so many factors involved with
pricing that it is just not that simple.
The best thing for one to do if you really want to understand, is travel to
a fall, with all the expenses involved, do all the work, the sell your
material. By then you will begin to understand. You will never see this
meteorite for retail sale at $7.00 per gram. If that is the case and if

Hello,
I got a call from a man that lives right in the area of which the

He wanted to know how much they were really worth.

What do you think the answer should have been?

Later he told me he had three big pieces and he thought $1.00 PER GRAM

sale from me, it will likely be quite expensive. I do not know what
the next few days hold, more pieces should be found though so maybe
we will have more luck.
I will email more info later.

Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle

2003-03-28 Thread Matt Morgan
Curious...so is this considered slander and can affected parties (dealers)
sue the universities for such? Any meteorite lawyers out there? I find this
behavior by respected scientists to be very unprofessional.

Steve Witt robbed the finder? Ask some of the
finders how the police ripped them off! And also
that idiot from Chicago! (NOT STEVE) What a maroon!

Hello everyone, a little news from the strewnfield.
The news is not good. The people here all think that
they are millionaires, they all want $10 to $20 gram
now. The police chief tols Steve Witt to leave or be
arrested as they think he robbed a meteorite finder
by paying several dollars per gram! The news has
stated that they are worth $500 per ounce ~$15 gram.
The Museum in Chicago has not helped, stating that
dealers are here to rip the locals off and that they
should donate all the pieces to the
  university/museum.
I have been in 6 homes today that were
penetrated by meteorites, serious damage to many of
them. There are many pieces but as I said, people
now want $100,000 for some stones and they are NOT
  JOKING.
I wish anyone who plans to come out good luck, I
will hunt tomorrow and try to secure a stone or two,
then go home and let people get to reality.
I do have 4 pieces totaling about one kilo, 3 pieces
that hit a house and damaged the siding. The other
piece is a half individual that impacted the median
in a road, and has the nose imbedded with yellow
street paint. I do not know if there will be any out
for sale any time soon, the price is so high we are
just walking away from many people.

any will come for sale from me, it will likely be
quite expensive. I do not know what the next few

Re: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteorite debacle

2003-03-28 Thread Tim Heitz
Hello,
I got a call from a man that lives right in the area of which the
meteorite fell. He told me that a guy had setup in a parking lot and was
paying $1.00 PER GRAM
He wanted to know how much they were really worth.

What do you think the answer should have been?

Later he told me he had three big pieces and he thought $1.00 PER GRAM
was not enough.
