Re: [meteorite-list] TUCSON METEORITE THEFT

2024-02-12 Thread Alfredo Petrov via Meteorite-list
As someone who lives in Tucson, I'll add that many Tucson storage units are
notoriously unsafe! I know of numerous thefts from storage units, and the
storage facility owners will not even necessarily inform you after your
unit has been burglarized. Especially for foreign dealers who only visit
their storage units once a year during the show, and burglars can easily
find out that the unit is not visited the rest of the year, I recommend
doing whatever you can to find alternatives to a storage unit.

I will be going. The only venues that will be closed by the Covid Comissars
will be the City-Owned properties like the Convention Center. That still leaves
the lion‘s share of locations free to

All things considered, April sounds a bit optimistic.

If a show was outside, like Quartzite, then I would be less worried
about exposure risk while attending. My main concern would be
traveling to and from the show and how lodging could be handled.
Traveling and lodging present their own inherent risks.

Or, they could just move the show to Florida where the governor is a
science-denier and business is open as usual. A lot of people down
here are acting like nothing is happening. Events, parades, parties,
sporting events with fans in the stands, the whole nine yards. Of
course, the hospitals are filled to the rafters and the morgues are
overflowingso there's that.

Stay safe!

Long-time friends and readers will remember Geoff Notkin's 2012
Independent Publishing Award-winner, "Meteorite Hunting," and this is a
massively revised and expanded edition of that title. Because a lot has
happened with meteorites and detectors and other tech during the past
seven years. It's such an extensive rework (50 pages longer, new photos,
infographics, and chapters) it was decided to treat it as an entirely
new book and give it a new title. And -- thanks to the wonders of modern
printing -- it's cheaper too! 154 pages, 130 exclusive photos and
illustrations, and on sale now for $16.95 at the Aerolite Meteorites
showroom at 22nd Street. Signed copies available, of course.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show 2017 Precautions and Advisories

2018-01-13 Thread Adam Hupe via Meteorite-list

Scary stuff,

Thank you for the heads up on the restaurants in Tucson that failed
health department guidelines. I have eaten at three or four of the
listed places in the past. I thought the stomach gurgles were from the
infamous Tucson Crude (flu) that goes around the show almost every year.
I remember my wife complaining to a waiter about the refried beans
being cold at an IMCA dinner at La Fuentes and he stuck his finger in
them and agreed. The waiter returned 20 minutes later with a second
serving of even colder beans.

The bed bug warning is definitely in order. My wife only agreed to
attend the show this year if we holed up in a hermetically sealed
Airstream travel trailer since she will not stay in a hotel in Tucson
ever again. We were attacked by these blood sucking vampires a few
years ago at a gem and mineral show which proved to be very costly. We
disposed of our luggage and clothes afterwards not wanting to bring
these disgusting bugs home with us.

Now, we always inspect hotel rooms for signs of bed bugs before
unloading our luggage. My wife made the mistake of closing the curtains,
turning off the lights and shinning a black light around the room the
last time we were in Tucson. Almost every surface exhibited fluorescence
caused by excitation of atoms in bodily fluids left behind from previous
guests. It looked somewhat like a murder scene you would see on a crime
show. We requested another room, were unable to sleep well and wished
we could forget what we saw.

Bed bugs are at epidemic levels in Tucson which ranks number 14 in the
entire nation for bed bug infestations!

Reference:
Aug 24, 2017 - Arizona Daily Star. Aug 24, 2017. Terminix is warning
Americans and those of us in Tucson and Phoenix that bed bugs are on the
rampage. Of the 20 top cities with a bed bug problem, Tucson ranks No.
14, which is not as bad as Phoenix at No. 7.

Warning; do not look at this graphic image if you do not want to see
some victims horribly bed bug bitten butt:

http://themeteoritesite.com/adam/BedBugBitesTucson.jpg

Be careful what you eat since they may be attracted to flatulence
especially when you are at your most vulnerable, degassing at night:

http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-reasons-why-bed-bugs-are-pure-evil.php

Woman killed by bed bug bites:
https://www.zappbug.com/killed-by-bed-bug-bites/

In all seriousness, be careful and use precautions so that you do not
pick up the flu, get eaten by bed bugs, get food poisoning or are
sickened by black mold.

Hello Everyone,

To All WordPress Users:  If you are using the "Fast Secure Contact Form"

Dear List Members,

I could not help but notice that with the Ensisheim show coming up that
there was not much fanfare about the Tucson show this year. I decided at
the last minute not to attend because of the lack of social activities on
the venue for meteorite people and reports that it was very, very slow. I
remember a time when there were five or six get togethers at the show and
you had to book a room nearly a year in advance.

Speaking of social activities, did anybody take pictures of the IMCA

anything about it.

Hello everyone. My room with Jim and Eric is up and running and the best ever.
Amazing things on display and for sale. I had to leave for a family emergency
but am dealing with that and will return Sunday evening. Jim can handle all my
business in my absence.
Be sure to check it out. Room 184 Hotel City Center. Moritz Karl and Comet shop
are all right by me so the backside of the hotel has becoming meteorite-row.

2017-01-27 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list
Yeah! Right!

But don't forget to go inside the courtyards, lots of big beasties to say hello
to.

AND...

My room to visit. Room 322, with lots of rare meteorites, and a gadzillion
Pallasites, all names, all sizes, all prices.

And a 5.2 kilos oriented-ventifact,

And a 5.2kilos LDG (arriving tomorrow)

And .. it would take me all day to list everything, so just come on over.

See you soon.

Hello, all;

Tucson is just around the corner!! We would like to invite everyone to stop in
and say Howdy at our two locations!

We will be setting up at the Riverpark Inn room 125 (down the hall from Erich

Our roommate Matthew Martin, Natural History Lab will have all the planetary
meteorites you can think of, as well as membrane boxes, awesome jewelry and
minerals.

We are also in Adam Aaronson's show - The Mineral and Fossil Marketplace and
will be setting up there as well on Feb 22nd; and open starting the 24th
through Feb 11th.

We will have our usual variety of beautiful Pallasites and irons, meteorite
knives, meteorite jewelry and a few new goodies. Come check us out! Located in
R3 and B2.

Happy New Year to everyone and see you at the show!!

Subject: [meteorite-list] Tucson Fun & Friends

Hello All,

Saturday morning we landed in Phoenix on delayed flights due to the storm
and didn't make it to Tucson until 3:30 AM. After sleeping in we eventually
made our way to the Inn Suites around 2:00 PM enjoying the pouring rain and
flooding. Being an experienced show attendee, I was able to 'talk' my way
through the blocked hotel parking area and found a spot 10 feet from the
covered walkway.

We spent the next three hours visiting with old friends, meeting new ones
and finally meeting a few 'Facebook' friends I have never met in person.
That night we met with close friends from out of state for dinner and
enjoyed great seafood and Margaritas... Awesome first day of the show!

Yesterday, after a relaxed morning of sleeping in again, we went to a couple
show rooms and I bought two nice diogenites, a CM2 and a gorgeous
howardite... We later met with friends for fantastic southwest grilled
seafood and delicious pizza while watching the Super Bowl, fun times were
had by all.

Today is another relaxed start of the day and more meteorite 'Fun &
Friends'...

Looking forward to meeting up more peeps!

Yes, in fact supposed to be 80F by the end of the week.
Weather will be flawless for the rest of the show.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson pics?

2015-02-01 Thread Raremeteorites via Meteorite-list
Good luck at the show. I do not depend much on eBay these days although it
is a good place to liquidate items if you are not concerned about getting
anywhere near top dollar. I still believe better deals are to be had online
these days for collectors who choose to stay home and make deals. I feel
sorry for all the Tucson show attendees that came early believing they would
get a good deal (full retail) from the Moroccans who's inventories are stuck
in customs.

It is appalling that some meteorite personalities would be involved with
crowdfunding (kistarter scams) and I have no clue who Bagdad Bob is since I
tend to stay away from heavily monitored social media. I leave Facebook to
my wife who can waste time comparing recipes, posting pictures and other
small talk.Even the creator of Facebook didn't have an account until a
few years ago. He doesn't have time for it.

It will be good to get back in the field and away from those who I no longer
trust,

Adam

Adam, I am sorry the only one having adversity seems to be you.
Good luck with that, one day when you actually leave your house and use
those cool trucks you might be happier.
Tucson won't be the same without you. But everyone here is getting a kick
out of your posts regarding the show. It's ok, Bagdad Bob was funny as well.
Those of us still in the business are doing fine, well, with some exceptions
of people who think eBay sales and kickstarter scams will make them any
money.
Anyway, nice chatting with you, I have a very busy and large room of
meteorites to attend to.

no problem at all this year. I left my options open and decided a few
days ago it was not worth it for me this year. The lack of deals, bad
weather, Superbowl traffic, scams and lack of meteorite social gatherings
was enough to keep me away this year.

The truth is that most people do not have much disposable income to attend
the show in the first place is what the news is reporting.

The millennials could care less about collectables these days and don't

acquired a large U.S. space program collection which I will start listing
items from in the up and coming weeks. My only hope is to break even on
it since it was acquired due to an investor failing to pay a note.

I wish all the honest dealers well and hope that collectors can find a

I'm confused, how could attendance be lowest in decades? The show starts
today. There are no rental cars and very hard to find a place to sleep in

My sales at just fine, and yes, there are no wholesale prices and supply

The show is great. Last year was my best year at the show, didn't sell a
million $$$ but actually not far from it.
People with no material and no ambition should stay home, as the show is
really active and walking required. The hotel parking lot was completely
full this morning, first time in a few years actually despite major
flooding rain.

Tucson is jumping. All hotels full. More people than in many years. Sales
are good. Supply is way down. Prices are up because supply running out.
The show is great. Last year was my best year at the show, didn't sell a
million $$$ but actually not far from it.
People with no material and no ambition should stay home, as the show is
really active and walking required. The hotel parking lot was completely
full this morning, first time in a few years actually despite major flooding
rain.

Here's the info:  Sat.  Feb. 8th, 2014.  On line soon. Lowest consignment fees

Has gone down and will be passed on to bidders as well. More soon, Michael

To my meteorite friends who live in Tucson or familiar with the place: This is
my first time to attending the show, and I had made the plan to drive by myself

[meteorite-list] Tucson Show & Flu

2013-01-18 Thread Greg Hupé

Hello Everyone,

After hearing about the severe flu this season and being one of the lucky
ones who has not gotten it yet, I will have a pocket container of Hand
Sanitizer on me at all times. I am no germaphobe, but simply washing your
hands after every handshake 'may' help to avoid the flu or spread it if you
have it. I would encourage every dealer to have a LARGE container in their
rooms that you and your guests can use FREQUENTLY!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! :)

Best Regards,
Greg

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show

2013-01-18 Thread Ed Deckert

Hi Adam,

You are a good man. I take care of an elderly parent at home, and it is
wonderful to hear that you too have the love and concern to want to take
care of family. Too often, parents are shoved off to live the rest of their
lives in an assisted living facility because nobody wants them. They cared
for us when we were children, but somehow, that does not always come full
circle when they grow elderly.

Yes, there are instances where assisted living is the only good option, but
like you, I wish to avoid that until it becomes absolutely necessary.

I sincerely hope that your mother-in-law's health continues to improve.

Warm Regards,
Ed Deckert

Dear List Members,

I tried everything possible to attend the Tucson Show but too many other
pressing concerns have come up.

The main concern is for my mother-in-law who we moved out here to Laughlin
three years ago. She has been having medical issues and her primary doctor
says leaving her alone for a few days is out of the question right now. We
do not want the state to place her in assisted living so we are doing our
best to work with her doctors, who in my opinion, have been over-prescribing
medications. A new doctor cut back her medications and she seems to be doing
better but it is too soon to tell. We almost lost her a few years ago due to
counterfeit Chinese medications that made it into American market.

My new wife , Zann von Hupe (married on 12-12-2012 at 12:00 noon) has had to
take care of her the last couple of weeks because I caught a nasty cold
which lasted way too long and her mother can no longer drive herself to
doctors' appointments. My advice is to get a flu shot before going to Tucson
if you haven't already. It takes two weeks to kick in and could save you a
lot of downtime and misery.

Luckily for me, they are having a Gem and Mineral Show right here in
Laughlin, Nevada. I am glad to see a new show in town since the McCloud
Jamboree which was held outdoors went away. This new show could be the start
of something fantastic since the economic advisers are talking about a
massive 18-hotel wide event with over 20,000 rooms available here in town.

Gem and Mineral Show 1-18-2013 to 1-27-2013:

Over 20,000 rooms spread over 18 casino/resorts in Laughlin:

I also booked two adjacent spots at the Remember When Antique Show if any of
you are in town from February 22 to the 24th. I will have many artifacts,
tons of antiques and maybe some meteorites on display.

I wish everybody a successful and enjoyable Tucson Show. I regret not being
able to join in the festivities but life has a way of setting priorities.

[meteorite-list] Tucson Show Page Updates & Smart Phone Tip

2013-01-14 Thread Paul Harris

Dear List,

Sorry... I should know better than to never say never... I was going to
try to stay away but I've resigned to the fact that it's not going to
happen... Once I start a project I can't just leave it half-finished, I
have to try to make it better & better. It's an ana_ part of my
personality that I'm sure drives Jim nuts and he could fill another
whole book with examples...

Since meteorite.com is now mobile friendly please use your phone to
browse to http://www.meteorite.com/tucson/ and bookmark the page. I've
added a menu which allows you to switch between Vendor, Visitors, and
Show Events. You don't have to try to print the pages anymore and you
will always have the most current information. For listings that have a
phone number you can just tap the number and it dials the phone (at
least on the iPhone).

Tucson Show Vendors
- Please submit your Tucson Show information here:
http://www.meteorite.com/submit-press-release/

Tucson Visitors
- If you want to publicly share your contact information please submit
here: http://www.meteorite.com/contact-us/
