Steve, If you were to ask, I am sure some folks here on the list would "rent"

all the

hassle of buying high and selling low.

However I need to ask: are you using your unemployment check again to buy
meteorites? We both know the Illinois Department of Labor doesn't look kindly
on using

unemployment funds to purchase inventory for business-activity--and they
consider buying and selling

business-activity whether declared or not. In fact one isn't eligible for
unemployment if they run their own business, and if it is an unlicensed
business. That gets into the fraud arenaagain.

One may not own/operate a "business" while drawing unemployment
compensation--and...well you already know that don't you? You may not be earning

"wages" but you aren't unemployed, if you are buying and selling. Some folks
have

the the IDOL Fraud Hotline on speed dial. The messages you post on the internet

I don't know the penalty of a conviction on this but is it really worth the risk

and given everything else you say is on your plate do you really want to take

Re: [meteorite-list] tatahouine

2011-04-02 Thread Jason Utas
Elton, A few things,

1) This issue is essentially identical to a similar situation from
about a year ago in which a list-member publicly 'called out' another
member on supposed illegal things they'd done. Regardless of the
court's verdict, the person who publicly posted the libel (yes,
"libel," because Chicago Steve has not been determined to be guilty of
anything) was banned from the list. In my opinion, you deserve the
same treatment.

You are publicly accusing Steve of illegal and potentially damaging
things without a shred of proof.

That is libel, and this list should not serve as a means for your
illegal dissemination of unfounded, damaging accusations.

If this list is 'fair,' you should be banned.

2) The issue that you have brought to light in no way has any bearing
on Steve's dealings in meteorites. I know for a fact that taxes are
not paid on many dealer and collector transactions because both cash
and rocks trade hands undeclared. Since I don't see you decrying such
actions as defrauding the government, and since the money saved in
such transactions goes back into the dealers' pockets and is converted
into new inventory, I can only assume that you're singling out Steve
here again, just like good ole' times, because you've got the same
cactus lodged up your backside. I don't know how or why you've got
such a beef with Steve, but I'm going to have to implore you, just as
I did years ago, to TAKE IT OFF LIST.

And if you've got a problem with Eric's email list -- I've got a yahoo
email account, too -- you can easily block his email address or mark
all of his incoming messages as spam with LITERALLY TWO CLICKS OF A
MOUSE. Since you haven't done that, just as you have chosen not to
block Steve (and have instead opted to publicly attack him...yet
again), I can only assume, as I did before, that you enjoy berating
people in public merely for the amusement of it.

Given your colorful and patchy history on this list due to prior list
infractions, I have no reason to believe otherwise.

Best,
Jason

nth time my desire to be removed from his mailing list for ebay auctions..sigh.

My post about a specific incidence of questionable "Ethics". In the meteorite
hobby, ethics extends beyond "which country allows or doesn't allow meteorite
export". When someone is potentially breaking a law then it is legitimate
discussion--especially when they are so in your face about it and freely posts
the details to the list. When someone is posting what most might believe to be
personal details (e.g. TMI )then it is also fodder for list discussion when it
raises the specter of fraud or abuse. Under that license, I addressed a
questionable activity to ensure that ethics were in fact being adhered to.
Seems the enablers don't care truly care about ethics-- just situational ethics
and protecting their diseased cows at the risk and expense other cow herders.

None of us wants Steve to "inadvertantly" violate any laws--especially any that
would bring discredit to the hobby. I think he was fairly notified that someone
IS looking over his shoulder just in case. This is a good thing as Martha
might
have said during her stint up river.

Re: [meteorite-list] tatahouine

2011-04-02 Thread MEM
(NOTE: waste, fraud , and abuse of public funds is a matter of public interest)

Steve, If you were to ask, I am sure some folks here on the list would "rent"
you some meteorites-- Netflix-style-- you can swap out every 2 weeks and save
all the

hassle of buying high and selling low.

You may not be
earning

"wages" but you aren't unemployed, if you are buying and selling. Some folks
have

the the IDOL Fraud Hotline on speed dial. The messages you post on the
internet

are evidence that you engage in buying and selling during times of
unemployment.

I don't know the penalty of a conviction on this but is it really worth the
risk

and given everything else you say is on your plate do you really want to take
groceries money to spend $350-600 for something you will eventually sell for
$70-80 out of desperation.

[meteorite-list] Tatahouine?

2009-03-22 Thread Michael Gilmer

Hi List,

I'm curious about something we hear frequently from people who
hunt (and re-hunt) the Franconia, Gold Basin, and other western
US strewnfields. But we never hear anything about people hunting
the old African strewnfields like Tatahouine. Since Tata is one of
those singularly-exceptional meteorites, there seems to be some
incentive for those with the means and churchbells to re-hunt it.
If nobody is hunting Tata, is it because Tunisia is not safe enough?
Compared to Algeria which sits right next door, Tunisia is
considered a relatively-moderate Sunni Arab state. I know it's
probably considered risky or remote compared to Morocco, so maybe
this is why nobody is looking.

Best regards,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Tatahouine Connoisseurs' Guide

2008-05-05 Thread mexicodoug

Dear Listees,

As I went through my specimens of Tatahouine all night; I just got that
old lovin' feeling all over again. I thought I would share some
personal opinions regarding this incredible green meteorite, with the
benefit of having looked at several kilos of material over the years.
They are personal opinions, though, so please understand opinions don't
always agree.

Here's what I wanted to share:

There are incredible natural telltale impact signs of on Tatahouine.
In general the locality should not be polished, as these valuable signs
may be erased. Of course some people may like to do this to enhance
looks orundrstand shock veining, but my personal opinion, nice pieces
are rare and contain the history of the meteorite written delicately in
the tiny markings. Like a quartz crystal, the meteorite can be
cut...but... At the mineral shows this is a common practice with big
quartz to make faux crystals that look cool. It's a personal decision.
Next, be wary of frequent claims of Tatahouine meteorites with fusion
crust. The same telltale signatures of crystal cleavage that show
impact, also show it impossible for fusion crust to have formed in many
places claimed with a little common sense. Tatahouine crust is
brownish-black, and very matte finished, and quite thick and a little
crumb-like. Don't ask me to explain crumb-like, that is just what I
think when I see it. And it's quite obvious once you've seen it one
time. If it is thin and shiny, and blue-black it is not what I
consider fusion crust. I believe it to be chromite and/or Iron Sulfide
inclusions. Whether they may have melted during entry or along crystal
boundaries due to other energy inputs, no comment, just that the
authentic fusion crust is completely differently textured. But many
will call this fusion crust. For me this is almost a moot point, there
is so little. Though, whatever it is, it is a nice feature to have.
But there are plent more much more interesting features once you get
into it, that these shiny black features are no where near the top of
my list. But I would stress it is not fusion crust. Fusion crust
invariably occurs, when it so very rarely does, on a powdery surface
which is smoothes (Don't clean or polish even if no crust!). Other
interesting features in Tatahouine are chromite inclusions as well as
Iron Sulfide. You can have a few specs of what looks to be metal
flakes built right into the crystal lattice. These are big crystals -
the biggest of any stony meteorite to my knowledge. I've seen one 6 cm
long! I just saw one specimen with a step-work lamilar crystal
fracturare pattern that blew my mind, also another with a blob of some
sort of metal contain gunk (or what - I don't know). Even shattercone
hairlines are pronounced in some specimens.

Did you know that the study of Tatahouine was what nailed the coffin
shut on the Allan Hills 84001 meteorite not having fossil Martian life
forms? It's because the same structures were observed to have
developed in meteorites recovered in 1994, compared to the original
material recovered a short time after the fall...

Best wishes,
Doug

Tatahouine Delight - Priced at a Song!

Dear Listees,

http://www.diogenite.com/t1.htm (Musical version honors Tatooine Planet in
Star Wars)
http://www.diogenite.com/t1ns.htm (Sound-free version - so you could hear a
pin drop)

I've got some really superb deals on Tatahouine diogenite meteorites this
second and final time around this week. The sale expires in a day and a
half and all specimens should be sent on Wednesday from the USA!

Sorry the monster specimens are no longer available but some quite big and
attractive pieces have been added along with some hefty babies under 15
grams - a whole category of small fry for this sale!

No one ever said,
"Most Tatahouine's are under 1 gram each" = you must buy micros". And I
prove that with some sweet deals on the lower range.

When saying "small", I still want there to be some structure to hold there.
As you scroll down to the bottom of the offering, all the new specimens will
be near the bottom including one for slightly above $100 with a great planar
face (practically flat enough to be cut) that appears to have a little nice
dab of that elusive fusion crust just below. The smaller the pieces,
generally, the lower the cost per gram and these are real bargains and nice.
Thanks kindly for buying or browsing.

And if you want the itsy bitsy ones - I have the right price on them too
(see link and go to the bottom of the page).

Best Health, and Thanks kindly for your time and I hope you enjoy looking at
the specimens as much as I do.

Of course, the Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia, and the town name
"Tatahouine" is where they got the planet name "Tatooine" from.

Steve,

You are a confused lizard that prefers basking in it's own bull instead of
sunshine. Too much time spent with frozen foods. You need a larger Campo
meteorite around your neck and a trip to Lake Michigan.

Hello All!

I have a 2-gram piece from Alain Carion, an 8-gram specimen

several 5+ gram pieces and two of these thin slices (0.76 mm) thick

[meteorite-list] Tatahouine and Slickensides

2004-05-10 Thread Steve Witt
Greetings List,

Slickensides has been a topic brought up many times on the list. I'm
still not exactly clear on what this is and I'd like to get a
clarification. I recently acquired a small fragment of Tatahouine
from Anne Black at Impactika. Besides having some fusion crust the
specimen shows striations very similar to those seen in shattercones.
(Thanks Anne for a beautiful and interesting specimen) Is this
slickensides? I've included links to five images;

No magnification -
http://www.geocities.com/stelor96/Tatahouine028.jpg

10X Magnification -
http://www.geocities.com/stelor96/Tatahouine045.jpg

Another view at 10X -
http://www.geocities.com/stelor96/Tatahouine044.jpg

Another at 10X -
http://www.geocities.com/stelor96/Tatahouine005.jpg

Finally one at 20X -
http://www.geocities.com/stelor96/Tatahouine020.jpg

The striations are very similar to those I've seen in Shattercones,
but never in a meteorite. There is a radial pattern and if the
specimen were larger I believe the lines would converge at some
point. There are also areas of the specimen (on the same side) where
the lines appear at different angles to each other.

So, my question is, is this slickensides or if not, can someone out
there tell me what this is.

I appreciate any and all help.

thanx,
Steve

Hello to all members of the list.

I'm going to Tunisia in february and I would like to know the exact location of the

position from the Catalogue of Meteorites and that it's at 2.5 kilometers from the

So I would be very happy to receive the 1932 report made by the tunisian army or an
exact GPS location.

I thank everybody in advance.

No, both the first and the second "ta"
rhyme with the "cu" of the word "cut".

As for the "hou" syllable, see Anne's double "OO".
A comparable sound would be the double-O in "loot"
or in "hoot", or "soot", etc.

... and a word for Anne's "ENE" would be "kerosene".

2003-03-03 Thread John Gwilliam
Rob and List,
I believe Rob's pronunciation is very close to correct. Bob Holmes and I
spent a few hours with Alain Carion and Anne Black at the Tucson Show while
filming a segment for our soon to be released video. While Alain talked
about the Tatahouine meteorite, Anne held two very large specimens in her
hands for the camera. Even with his beautiful thick French accent, it was
easy to hear how Alain pronounced the name. Since he has personally hunted
the strew field several times, I'd venture that he is pronouncing it properly.

Best,

John Gwilliam

Hi list,

Thanks Robert,

I think one should say:

"ta" "ta" "ween"

"ta" as in "cat", twice.

"ween" as in between.

The "tu" pronunciation is a Spilberg idea, not a tunisian one. Not far from
Tataouine, one can visit the site where was shot the movie that made this
city more famous than the Diogenite.

Tataouine is the correct spelling from the name of this Tunisian city. I
should find a photo of the road marks with this spelling in my files. I will
put that on my site one day.

A easy trip but today all fragments are gone unless you look for smaller
than 0.01 g. The 3 impact crater are still there, pretty empty. An old 1931
map facilitates their discovery.

G'day List,

Hopefully someone may be able to help me out with
this one. Does anyone know where Tatahouine ranks on the MOH Hardness scale? (Or
if it has even been tested this way?)

I was also curious with it's pronounciation. Like

I would think:

Or something to that effect. Like I said;
assumption! ;-) Maybe one of the dealers out there may have been
