Re: [meteorite-list] Almahata Sitta still giving up secrets

2011-11-01 Thread MexicoDoug

Hi Linton,

Nice article even if nothing is new it still is a very pleasant read by
a good writer.

I do have a complaint, though, which really is nothing to do with the
writer. We're meteorite geeks here and the article was all about
meteorite analysis. So 'TC3 is not as the article is titled: The
Asteroid that fell to Earth;

In fact is has a better distinction; it is the Meteoroid that fell to
Earth while someone or something was sort of watching; Not comets; not
asteroids; but rather, Close encounters of the Third Kind.

The MPC is not a classification authority; In fact, to have a little
fun if they wish to ignore meteoroids as a classification, they'd best
not be usin' our terms and be consistent calling 'em: their Asterites.

Kindest wishes
Doug

Just got a heads up on this new DVD release.

 Countdown to Impact

 Product Description
For the first time in the history of space exploration, scientists spotted
and tracked an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. About the size
of a truck, the asteroid slammed into the Nubian Desert in Sudan, in nearly
the exact spot and only a few seconds from the time scientists had
predicted. Now, together with NASA scientists, National Geographic joins
 researchers
as they examine the remnants of the asteroid to unlock the clues to help
us prevent or survive a future incident.

This article implies that Sudan might be playing politics over this, with the
meteorites (and the collectors) just an excuse:

Hello Anne and Siegfried,

I had heard about these arrests earlier. Lets hope for their speedy return
to their families and homes. This is a very sad situation. It was almost one
year ago we flew to Cairo to try and get visa's to enter Sudan and hunt for
Almahata Sitta stones. Maybe it was a blessing that some of us Western
countries are not allowed entry visa's due to political problems.

I wish the three safe captivity and for a speedy and welcome return home!

Dear List members,
Much to my regret I learned yesterday that three Europeans have been
arrested in Sudan because of being in possession of Almahata Sitta
meteorites.
Since two weeks they are in a Sudanese jail and the outcome of this matter
is

uncertain.
In this connection several meteorite collectors asked me about the status
of my Almahata Sitta specimens.
Therefore, I want to let you know that all of the Almahata Sitta
meteorites

I have and offer for sale were exported with an official export license.
Who wants to see this license can have a look at it in Anne Black's show
room in Tucson (IMPACTIKA, Hotel Tucson City Center, Room 230).

With best collector's regards

Thanks!
