Wow Sonny What a great find . I cant wait to see some photos of it. I am
totally jealous stuck here in the Wet Cold Shetland Islands in Scotland
a bit longer. But I have been looking for that chance in a million or
billion that a meteorite may have been stacked years back in the very very
old rocks walls that are are over the islands here . No such luck yet on
that dream, but I do get to see lots of bunnies watching me .

Hi List,

I wanted to share some exciting news about a phone call I recently
received.

While I was out in the field looking for meteorites I came across some
fossilized bones that were eroding out of the desert ground. I took a few
pictures and showed them to the agency responsible for that area. They
called me the other day to let me know that what I had found was a
Mammoth! I don't believe any Mammoth's have been found at this location
before. I hope to post some pictures of this when I get home.

Greast find Sonny!

You never know what you'll find when you go looking.

About 6 or 7 years ago I was working as an electrician on a big
industrial new build, and thinking I was being funny, asked the guy
that had the excavating contract if he had ever dug up a meteorite. He
said, No, but I once dug up a Wooly Mammoth! Turns out that he dug it
up in the town of Lake Orion, only about 10 miles from my house.

Too bad he didn't say that he did dig up a meteorite and then lead me
to a giant iron or something.

Happy Hunting,

Sincerely,

2011-07-25 Thread U.S. Airborne

Hi Larry
Funny story. I have one kinda like it.
Before I left home in WA State for this Documentary film in the North
Atlantic Sea . I got a call from a

guy that read one of my Meteorite wanted posters . A older fella that builds
logging roads . He does a lot of heavy equipment work . He said he found a
big strange rock on one of his jobs a few years back. It was real rusty on
the out side was sluffing off what looked like rusty stuff but the inside
looked like Iron. He said in all of his time 30 years of heavy equipment
digging he has never seen a rock like
it before. And that there are more at this same location. But he just kept
the one.

He said it was about 18 ft underground He loaded it with one of his tractors
into his truck took it home. He said he would pay my gas to drive up
look at it when I get home in Sept. Sounds like a good lead So I will go
have a look see when I get back.

Hi List,

Thanks for all of your kind replies. I thought it was a pretty cool
discovery too.

I will have to get the okay from the agency before I post pictures. I
think they may want to explore the area first.

Thanks,
Sonny

Nice! I'm envious in a great way, from the confines of the home.

Of Meteorites and Mammoths? ... a title exuding trail pheromones!

Just goes to show, you never know what you will find in the desert.

...Sonny (Feb 2007)

This find sure beats the hoisted, crucified cows I remember you telling
us about!

It reminds me of the time my girlfriend and I walked right over the
backbone of a ridge. Turned out to be more of a backbone than we
expected: a Cretaceous Mosasaur's

What a nice feeling you must have had Sonny - and a better site to camp
out at than the last one ;-)

Meteorite hunting is so broadening ...

Kindest wishes,
Doug
