According to Wikipedia, third season ran between 28 November 2011 and 9 January 2012. As I said, I haven't got the chance to see any of the episodes yet, but I plan to fix this soon. Hi List, Geoff is absolutely right about NEAF. If you are interested in optics, astronomy, or meteorites, it is well worth a visit. The latest in cutting-edge optics is always on display and every year Televue has it's famous Blem Sale where you can buy eyepieces like Naglers and Panoptics at a substantial discount. Plus, Alan Traino (one of the key organizers of NEAF) is a great guy and he makes sure that NEAF always has interesting vendors and speakers. If you are in the area, don't miss it. Hi Abe, You got me so excited about the DVD release that I went to Amazon.com to purchase it and found that what there selling is on demand viewing of the episodes at $1.99 each. Dear Abe, Todd, and all: Meteorite Men Season One is currently airing in Canada on the Discovery Science channel. I'm sorry to report that we do not yet have a DVD release date for any Meteorite Men episodes. When Steve and I were at Science Channel/ Discovery HQ recently, we asked again about this, but no decision has been yet been made. Season Two is not yet half-way through its premieres here in the US, so there's no chance of a S2 release until all the new episodes have aired. Once S2 has gone through its first run, there will be 15 Meteorite Men episodes total, including the pilot, so our hope is they may do a boxed set release of all of them. I will certainly post news to the M- List when we have it. As for the Amazon downloads, you can watch them directly on your computer, without the need for any additional hardware. The image quality is quite good for the pay-per-view episodes (and there are no ads!), so that is at least one option for you. One of you asked how to find out which episodes you might have missed, and you may find our Meteorite Men Episode Guide to be useful for that: http://meteoritemen.com/meteorite-men-episode-guide.htm Finally, we constantly post news about the show -- including air dates and overseas broadcast outlets, photos, etc. -- on our Facebook and Twitter pages, and invite you to connect with us there if you would like to know more: http://www.facebook.com/meteoritemen http://twitter.com/meteoritemen Thank you for your interest and we hope you enjoy the show. Yup! available from ItunesBUT NOT IN CANADA! Lots of great episodes available in the States but we need to suffer north of the border. Probably because they are showing for the first time on the Candian Science Channel ( Which I don't get ;() Hopefully they will be released in Cananda in the near future. Hello Listers, I was doing an Internet search today on meteorites and came across a write up about NWA meteorites. I would have to say it was a good write up considering there isn't much about the history of NWA's on the Internet. The write up covered topics from the NWA gold rush, to how this affected sales and peoples desert meteorite collections, and how NWA meteorites by some can be seen as inferior to other meteorites. All these points do bring up some interesting view points in the meteorite community. I wonder what peoples take is on NWA meteorites and how the classification works or doesn't work with some finds? Why I ask this is because some of the NWA meteorites on eBay are NWA xxx meteorites, meaning those meteorites haven't been classified and probably wont. Now to me for every NWA meteorite excluding the Lunar and Martian meteorites could be almost unique in its owe if there is only a select few people that get these stones classified, making the NWA meteorite market confusing and regulated by only classifying certain meteorites and disregarding others. And as for selling NWA meteorites how does one determine the price point when the TKW and location is unknown? Is it to be or not to be when collecting NWA meteorites. this draw back could affect the classification and make it more confusing compared to finds in the US and Europe. If I went to the Muffin strewn field and found some meteorites, I wouldn't have to get them classified because of the documentation of a fall being there. But on the other hand, if I went to Africa and found some meteorites I would be SOL and the only way I could know what the meteorite was is if I got it classified, which I am not sure how much that costs, but I bet it can be a pretty penny depending what your getting done on it. Now could this be a problem in some peoples eyes why they think NWA's might be questionable because locations cant be accountable? And from a collectors stand point what features does one collect NWA's? From my take it seems like that some NWA

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Men on DISCOVERY Channel Tonight + UK on Quest
Hi Geoff: I enjoyed the episode last night very much. Beautiful find by Steve, but you did find the first one. I had a thought at the end - I think a great episode would be what happens to a 'type' specimen after arriving at a University to be classified. You could have a variety of samples and show how they are cut and prepared and then how the thin sections are made. Then how are they probed and then explain the different classifications. You could include a lot of information and make it not too technical; and of course, what make some meteorites more valuable. I have gotten meteorites classified and it would be really neat to see the entire process. I hope you get a second season. Keep at it... and one day you'll find one on that Mesa. Greg S. I would agree that a few shows on historic and educational outreach would be a good thing, but Im sure they probably have rather limited input on the direction of the show. That said, I would like to hear them comment of the possibilities of doing more in this area. The show is a great tool to bring more new people into meteorites, but as with anything (baseball cards, toys etc) when there is a value and increase in interest, there will be scammers that come in to try to make the quick buck. Overall, the show is one of the best marketing tools the meteorite world has seen. Keep it up guys, as others have said, there is room to grow! As much as the Meteorite Men show has provided better awareness to meteorites in the general population, it has also spurred the conmen and get-rich-quick schemers. I think the show has been steered by producers to make it more appealing to viewers, but in doing so have placed far too much emphasis on monetary value and too little on scientific importance. This brings all the riffraff out of the woodwork and now we are beginning to see the negative effects this brings on our hobby/business/passion. I do not even respond any more as I do not like to be put in a position as the bay guy who has to break the news that their worthless rock will not make them the latest millionaire. This is what happens when the media focuses too much on the monetary aspect of meteorite collecting. It out weighs any educational benefit this type of show may have provided. The state Washington and Oregon suddenly announced their no collecting policy on federal land; the timing is uncanny. A lot of scam artists will also attach themselves if the smell of easy money is present. One just has to look at the most expensive meteorites on eBay to see this effect. Now, there is always a few fakes listed in the top dollar page. I would hate to see meteorite hunting/collecting go the way treasure hunting did 25 years ago when the avocation almost went extinct, mainly due to the press. Professional treasure hunters now avoid the press when values are put up. Just look at the Mel Fisher group who had to fight for a decade to keep a good portion of their major find due to the fact the press attached a billion dollar price tag to it. Everybody seemed to have a claim on it when they didn't lift a finger to find it. The press made it look easy when in fact Mel suffered many hardships including the loss of his sons life. Thank you for the insight, Steve. I had a feeling the instant field appraisals were not instigated by you and Geoff. Keep up the good work, and good luck scoring a season 2. Linton - Original Message - From: meteorh...@aol.com To: Adam Hupe raremeteori...@yahoo.com; meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com; Adam meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Monday, March 22, 2010 1:41 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Men effects Hey list, Interesting topic. I thought I would change the Subject Line though. Let me give you guys a little behind the scenes understanding of what happens in the making of Meteorite Men. There is a production company that owns the show by the name of LMNO Productions. They have been around maybe for 20 years with 150 or so different programs under their belt. Some were long running series, some were just one-offs, but they have a very experienced staff of professionals that know what they are doing. They came up with the idea of the Meteorite Men show after reading a front page story about me in the LA Times back in 2007. They had not seen anything about the earlier programs Geoff and I (nor anyone else) had been on when they called me that first time. They made a short 4 min video and pitched it to a handful of networks, and Science Channel gave them the best offer for a pilot, so they took it. Geoff and I were hired as the Talent and we were in show business! Now here is how it works: there is an Executive Producer assigned by the network to oversee the production of the episodes. Geoff and I have a boss, that is the show's Executive Producer who has a boss that is the owner of the LMNO Production Company. We all, in reality, have one customer, and that is the Science Channel's Executive Producer. If this one man is happy, we get paid. If he is not happy, they keep sending the video back to get it changed to how he likes it. Once it is adjusted to how he likes it, we get paid. In theory, the Executive Producer on the Network side hopefully knows what his network's audience will like, and he directs us all in the right direction. If not, he gets fired. Rest assured, nothing makes it onto your TV sets at home that is not exacly what he wants. Now, we have been told that if we do get a second season, the network will send the episodes from the first season to some very exhaustive market research, where carefully selected participants will sit in dark rooms watching the episodes with a dial in their hands. When they like something on the show, they dial it one way. When they don't like something, they dial it the other way. Sometimes this gets to be subconscious in the minds of the viewing research subjects. But it is very scientific, and it is the one way to actually trump the personal opinion of the networks EP. If every time my face is on screen, most or all the people turn their dials to the right, and every time Geoff is on screen, they turn it to the left...well...then there might jkust be tryouts for a replacement Meteorite Man to take one of our spots. If they don't like my Tshirt, or the way I go Oh, oh, oh... Right before each comercial. But rather they like how I say Geoff, look what I found! then we can rest ashured I will be instructed what to say or not say in the future, or by the magic of post-production I will say the right things before all the future commercial breaks. Each of first 7 episodes were quite different in many ways. It will be interesting what the market testing might end up revealing. If the key demographics don't like the values of the meteorite being revealed during the show, then I'm sure what our one customer wants will end up changing. And in turn, that will change the directives to our production company in how the put future shows together in post production. Starting a letter writing campaign to Science Channel might be tempting, but unless you have a Nielson Box, on your TV, I don't think it will help. Let me point out that about a dozen years or so ago, I did a promotional campaign in the media that generated 240 samples of suspected meteorites being sent to me. Out of that batch, 3 were genuine meteorites. I could have complained about the 79 wrongs for each 'rite, but I didn't. It is a numbers game. Yes it can get frustrating dealing with the wrongs and the people who send them in. May I suggest that if you are such a person who easily gets frustrated, don't solicit that people send you samples to evaluate. I'm sure there are more than enough others to pick up the slack. Who knows what all the good and bad will be from the Meteorite Men series? Let's have this discussion in 40 years, and if 20 of us talk then, we still will probably have 20 different takes on it then. I understand in general, some people are the glass is half empty pessimistic types, and they often really enjoy being negative. While others are the

Hi Paul, Following on from your information about bog ironI was recently shown a picture by a friend who had visited Orkney, off the coast of Scotland. It showed a rock labeled as a meteorite in a cabinet at the museum there. I had never heard of that before and followed it up with emails to the museum and other investigations. Apparently that was collected after a fireball was seen over the island many years ago and although it is still labelled as 'meteorite' in their small museum it has been independently looked at by a local geologist who seems sure it is bog iron. Apparently it is commonly found on the Island in the peaty areas. I too am still not confident what that stone may be...I am sure it has never been tested for nickel. Meteorite or Meteorwrong? A new British meteorite or not? The finder's family say they have some other pieces and would send me samples, but nothing yet. Anyone know the exact mechanism that forms bog iron? Graham Ensor..UK Paul Heinrich oxytropidoce...@cox.net wrote: Dear Friends, Meteorite Men is a great show. personally, I feel that it has a nice mix of science, humor, entertainment, and droll, low-key adventure that many shows needs to have. From my job, I can tell that bit definitely has generated a lot of interest in Louisiana, with a very definite increase in inquiries, about meteorites and meteorite hunting received by other geologists and I. There have been a bunch of rocks, some of which have been lying in people's closests for decades. Unfortunately, they have so far been meterwrongs and even one craterwrong. However, a person never knows when that meteorite that has been either sitting in someone''s porch as doorstop or in their garage for the past few years will finally make it way into my or some other geologist's office possibly because of the interest generated by Meteorite Men. One of the more strange meteorwrongs was a gneiss boulder about 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter that got pulled up in a fishing net off Grand Island, Lafourche Parish. The most frustrating meteorwrongs in Louisiana are bog iron ores, which form in permanently saturated coastal plain soils and often are associated with springs. Pieces of this material have an unfortunate tendency of being dense, pitch black, and even magnetic. Certain pieces are troublesome because neither I nor any other geologist feel comfortable, despite what intuition says, about judging them as definite meteorwrongs without being able to inspect them in person. I have been tempted to suggest to to a soil scientist, whom I worked with, that looking at the genesis of these bog iron ores would be a worthwhile project for a Masters thesis for some student. I and another geologist can at least now point out a number of places where they can be studied. They have a strange, although quite terrestrial, mineralogy. Yours, Paul H. Darryl and all, Thanks for being so kind in helping us out at this year's show in compiling footage of what happens at the Tucson show. That thanks goes out to all our other friends who were also willing to jump in front of the camera to help us make our show a lot better. It was exciting to see footage shot less than 3 weeks ago make it into tonight's episode. We got quite a bit of footage in Tucson that includes a lot of our friends. If Meteorite Men gets a second season, more of this captured footage including more of our friends, customers and fellow hunters will be able to be featured. getting $700,000 in green bills is a long shot, but if it can be traded for, say 14 items each in the $50,000 range, and those could be converted to green cash, is it wrong to say it is worth that. Need I remind everyone that the finder of the Tagish Lake 800 gram rock (similar in size and composition as Sonny's) got $800,000 in Canadian money for his find. Sonny is in the business, and as such, he really might realize $700k for his CM1 rock over time. Could he take it to a pawn shop in vegas and get $700,000? No, I would think not. But if someone else finds a CM1 here in the US and wants to sell theirs for $72/g ($50,000 / 699g) then cool. Hell Mike, Steve, and List, Right, but you're applying the price per gram that would apply to small pieces in retail to a much larger stone. A single gram may be worth a thousand dollars (in this case, it's probably justified, given what comparable material is known to sell for), but the simple fact of the matter is that it would take decades to sell off 700 grams at that price in small pieces. Ask any dealer who's held a stable asking price for material for which they are the only source. As a complete stone, I estimate that the highest offer on it would reach $60-70,000. Don't get me wrong - it could sell for more, but...it's wholesale. Yes, it might be worth more in a sense, but I believe that the general consensus here has always been that these rocks are worth what people were willing to pay for them. I haven't asked Sonny, but based on what I know of the market, I doubt that he's gotten an offer as high as 100k for it. He might well get a better offer, but that would make it one of the more costly meteorites to actually sell - in the past decade. So, no. I think it's safe to say that $700,000 is not close to a reasonable estimate. Even if you assume $1000/g for smaller pieces, you're not taking cutting losses into account, which would take it to at most $500k, or thereabouts, and it would take so long to sell that simply stating a price like that is rather deceptive. There's a reason that the asking price for the 420kg Fukang main mass is in the 2-3 million dollar range (about $5-6/g), as opposed to being $16.8 million. Fukang may be worth $40/g. That doesn't mean that a large piece is worth that much. And the same principle applies across the board - a single acre of land will run you more per acre than will an acre of land in a hundred-acre parcel. And if you buy ten cars from a dealer, they'll probably give you something of a discount, whereas if you buy only one...not so much. I appreciate the optimistic quote from the market's perspective, but...it's just not reasonable to say that the rock is worth that much when it wouldn't fetch that on the market. As a collector and part-time dealer, the prices given for some of these specimens seems a bit on the optimistic side. From a dealer's perspective, if the public thinks a meteorite is worth more than it actually is, the dealer charge more for them. From a hunter's perspective, if the public thinks a meteorite is worth more than it actually is, they can have unrealistic expectations for what their rocks are worth. Steve has spoken about this on the List previously, because landowners will have unrealistic expectations of what their specimens are worth - and this gives hunters fits who are trying to buy specimens or cut deals with landowners. And the same principle applies across the board - a single acre of land will run you more per acre than will an acre of land in a hundred-acre parcel. And if you buy ten cars from a dealer, they'll probably give you something of a discount, whereas if you buy only one...not so much. I appreciate the optimistic quote from the market's perspective, but...it's just not reasonable to say that the rock is worth that much when it wouldn't fetch that on the market. . (or an insured house fire) Don't get me wrong. I am not picking on Sonny's awesome specimen. That is truly an amazing find and any meteorite hunter would cream himself upon finding it. The only thing better would be if Sonny found the first US lunaite. And my dollar amount gripe was specifically targeted at Sonny's CM1. Even those dry lake bed weathered chondrites seem overpriced at $1.50 a gram or $2 a gram. I guess they are probably worth that much now because they have been on TV, but I can buy prettier weathered ordinary-chondrites from NWA for a 20 cents a gram. A collector looking for a cool rock that was on TV and was found by a famous meteorite hunter will pay extra for an OC from Meteorite Men - but most collectors who buy weathered OC's are also the types who look for bargains and will buy the stones that cost .20 cents a gram and pass on the more expensive ones, regardless of their connection to TV. Heck, I just traded 100 grams of trinitite for 4000 grams of weathered uNWA stones. I won't say what my cost on trinitite is, but I can say that the batch of uNWA I traded for is prettier than the dry lake bed specimens (for the most part, I do have some UGLY ones though) and my cost was less than $1 a gram - substantially less. (FWIW, the ugliest ones are going into a rock tumbler) I just don't want this emphasis on dollar values to come back and bite us in the ass. I can imagine Steve (or any hunter) going up to some landowner and attempting to broker a deal to hunt on the land, and the landowner will expect $10,000 for every 100-gram OC that is pulled out of the dirt on his land - because there is an inflated sense of what these stones are worth. On the List, we know that a meteorite's stated value often has an asterisk next to it, and I think it's important that the general public knows that as well. Of course we have to mix the geeky science with a little humor and drama, or people won't stick around for the end of the show, and won't come back next week. I want to give a HUGE amount of credit to our LMNO Productions team. We have had over 95 people working on this show on the production side, not to mention the hundreds of people working over on the Science Channel and Discovery Network to make this happen. Millions of dollars have been invested to bring this episode to air, and it is very humbling realizing that while Geoff and I have our faces on screen, NONE of this would be possible without the team behind the scenes. And, I would be remiss to not take the time to thank ALL of you that have supported me over the last 18 years when I have tried to eek out a living in this crazy business. If it weren't for the scientists who study these rocks, if it weren't for the collecting customers that buy a piece here and a slice there from me, tonight would never have become a reality. I have to give a huge shout out to Blaine Reed who was my one and only customer for the first 6 years of my meteorite career. In a business of buy low and sell high, somehow, Blaine had a philosophy of How much can I afford to pay Steve for what he brings me? as opposed to How cheap can I get these rocks from Steve? Blaine, if it weren't for you buddy, I would have been out of this business before I even got into it. I owe you a big Margarita at the Birthday Bash, and every Birthday Bash from here on out. In fact, anyone who likes this show tonight, buy Blaine a drink before you offer me one, ok? Of course kudos have to go out to THE Meteorite Man Bob Haag, who blazed a trail through a jungle that we all are enjoying the fruits of now. Harvey Nininger, Oscar Monnig, Glen Huss, H.O. Stockwell, just to name a few, are pillars that hold the roof over all of our heads now. I have to thank my amazing wife, Qynne, and the two greatest daughters a guy could ever hope to have, Lauren and Kelsey who have shared me and my time with this calling. A big thanks goes out to Phil Mani who on a gut feeling supported the Brenham adventure a few years back, which was one domino in the series to fall that led to all of this. There is a huge amount of credit and thanks that needs to be extended to the 8n8 crew that inadvertently journeyed with me to the Alpha site several years back which ended up being in our pilot episode. All of you guys are getting your financial return on the project, but also know from me that you guys also deserve a monster sized Thank You. You are appreciated more than you will ever know. And personally, I have to give the greatest amount of credit

Right on Larry, they had a 10 dob on the patio and lot's of folks were treated to a nice view of the moon, and low power looks at Mars. Great venue! I think I'm tied up next week because I have secretarial duties at an annual business meeting (but hoping I'm wrong - or able to come late). Richard Posted: by special edition, do you mean just that the original pilot is airing on Discovery or that this is a different cut of the pilot? Dear Richard: Our executive producer at Science advised us that the version of the pilot airing tonight will be largely the same as the original, but will include a short trailer for the new series. I expect that to be a composite of scenes from the upcoming episodes. We are excited by this broadcast because -- as you know -- Discovery is one of the larger cable networks in the world, and so this special airing will hopefully introduce meteorite science and meteorite collecting to a much larger audience. At least we hope so! : ) See you at the gem show, cheers, Geoff www.aerolite.org http://science.discovery.com/tv/meteorite-men/ www.meteoritemen.com __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Steve, Welcome back. We have missed you. I could not agree with you more. The B-day bash and Harvey awards is always a kick. Even Bob Haag showed up last year. Hopefully Twink will come through again with her famous Meteorite Cake at Michael's auction as well. Can't wait. Thanks Carl -- Carl or Debbie Esparza Meteoritemax meteorh...@aol.com wrote: Hey list, Just a little note...for the record...for those that are not aware, there are two Steve Arnold individuals in the meteorite world. One is: 1. Steve Arnold, who lives in Arkansas, who also is the co-host (along with Geoff Notkin) of Science Channel's TV series Meteorite Men who has been full time in the meteorite business for over 17 years... ...and the other is: 2. Steve Arnold from Elgin (Chicago) Illinois, who is a collector and who is...who is... well...at the very least, he is the one referred to in this Meteorite List thread. Please don't confuse these two Steve Arnold's with each other! Thanks. On a personal note, I have been a bit too busy the last few months to respond here as much as I would like. All too often I would read an email thread a week after the first post was made and the issues would seem to be resolved by the time I would get around to reading the thread. Just a note to those of you who are curious, Geoff and I just returned this weekend from a trip to Nevada spending time with a crew of 20 professional TV crew members shooting a TV promotion commercial of our new series Meteorite Men. This last week, when we arrived on to the location of the shoot, it looked more like we were coming onto the set of LOST or CSI as opposed to the normal Meteorite Men production set. Normally we have a much smaller crew chasing us as we have been trying to shoot this first season of episodes the last few months, but this last week was different. The production team hired to make the commercial spot is scheduled to have a various assortment of finished 30 second commercial spots delivered, to the Science Channel network, to start running by December 30. We have been told that the spot will run on ALL of Discovery's channels, and not just on Science Channel. So, for those of you that don't have the Science Channel, keep your eye's open for it on Discovery, TLC, Military, and the other U.S. Discovery channels. Also, just as a heads up, if the promotion staff of Discovery (Science Channel's parent company) chooses to go a bit over the top with the promotion commercials, and they choose to use a bit of artistic license with the topics that they choose to produce, we hope the purists in our midst will understand. ;-) If the commercials just run 10 times a day on each of the 10 US Discovery Channels then that would be 100 showings each day of the commercials promoting meteorites over EACH of the next 60 days. I am not good at math, but we can expect, just from the commercials, for millions of people to be exposed to field of meteoritics for the first time, from these commercials. For those of you that have been considering upgrading to get Science Channel on your DIRECTV connection, so that you can see all of the episodes of Meteorite Men come January 20th, I invite you to email me OFF LIST to get a special DIRECTV deal. For everyone that already subscribes to Science Channel, I invite you to mark you calendars (or program your DVRs) for January 20, and for each Wednesday afterwards for the next 6 weeks, at 9 pm (Eastern) for a new episode of Meteorite Men. (And if anyone on this list is a Neilson Box viewer, please contact me off list for a very special offer. ;-) I think Geoff Notkin mentioned here on the Meteorite List about the upcoming 2010 Meteorite Mayhem Birthday Bash in a previous posting, but I should add that this year's Notkin/Arnold event promises to be VERY worthwhile to attend. So much so, I encourage everyone planning to come to the Tucson Show, to arrive early enough to make it in time to attend the big party on the evening of February 5, 2010. While Michael Blood's Auction is great to attend on Saturday, the fun actually starts about 24 hours earlier at the Birthday Bash on Friday Night. For those of you who have not attended one of the Birthday Bash events in the past decade, the gathering is only about 2% about it being a couple of guys birthday, and it is closer to around 98% an event about an opportunity to mingle and hook up with all of the fellow global meteorite enthusiasts (dealers, collectors, scientists, etc) that does not occur anywhere else during the year, this side of the Asteroid Belt. Over the dozen or so years that I have attended the Tucson Show, with the exception of Adan Hupe's comments here on the list about a bad hotel experience, I don't think I have

Slated to debut January, 20, 2010, Meteorite Men watches as the duo use cutting-edge technology to detect remnants of meteorites and space debris. For the new season, Notkin and Arnold are looking to find answers to The Tucson Ring Mystery, an anomaly of the meteorite world. The pair head to Odessa, Texas, to explore a 65,000 year-old meteor buried deep in the ground, and scour West Texas for tiny pieces of the Ash Creek meteorite. Meteorite Men uniquely combines adventure with science, said Debbie Myers, Science Channel's general manager. Steve and Geoff are helping us learn more about the universe by bridging the gap between the earth sciences and their passion for finding and studying meteorites. There have been many reality television shows that have attempted to search for 'visitors' from outer space, added Eric Schotz, the show's executive producer. With our new series, we are actually finding them. It is very exciting to follow Steve and Geoff as they gather objects from space that can answer all sorts of incredible questions about our past as well as our future. Carl, I think you are truly insane! Now you are calling me a racist! Talk about another Libelous statement you have made against me! The opinions shared below belong solely to me, and do not necessarily reflect on the opinions of this meteorite list, our TV network or our sponsors. :-) Due to much of the feedback I have received, there is a lot of support for what we doing with the TV show and our promotions. There is no shortage of good vibes coming our way. For that I am grateful. Thanks. Of course, most of the people who are close friends of ours are more in on the details of what is happening with us, while others that are more removed might be seeing things from a skewed perspective. Let me take a little time to explain the journey I have been on, much of which includes Geoff as well. Back when Phil and I found the Brenham Main Mass in 2005, we hired Geoff Notkin to help us with a press release and with fielding media inquiries that the buzz was creating. I have not had much experience with professional full time public relations experts, so I don't know what they are all capable of, but in my opinion, what Geoff did was outstanding. With a carefully crafted press release, and with him manning the phones and the emails, we got some very good coverage of that find. In Public Relations, it is my opinion that it is not an exact science. While some things lead to another, often it is a combination of things that lead to other breakthroughs. I think it is more a strategy of throwing as much mud up as possible on the barn wall and see what sticks. One can send out 100 press releases, but it might just be one place that runs with it, then like a wild fire it can take off...or it can still fizzle out. Here is how our story went. With the Brenham Main Mass find, we sent out a press release, that led to the ABC affiliate in Wichita wanting to air it as their the story of the night live. Since they used a satellite uplink to broadcast it live from near the find location, it was open for all the other networks to rebroadcast it. The Weather Channel ran a blurb on it about 3 am the next morning. Then the NBC Today show did a live broadcast with me that weekend. The newspaper story in the Wichita Eagle paper might have had a contribution to the Today Show being interested because as that took off on the AP and via the Drudge Report (and it's 10,000,000 viewers a day) so that first print story end up running in over 300 papers world wide. The Today Show led to a couple other things. And we continued to pursue the idea of the story of the find to be featured in a TV show. We contacted Discovery, History Channel, Nat Geo, Science Channel and some other obscure networks, all with no avail. Then seemingly out of the blue Travel Channel called us. Travel Channel? What in the world would the Travel Channel want to do with a meteorite story? Sure, the meteorite traveled a long way to get here, but still? Well, the producer told us they were making a show that was about treasure hunting where families could do what the host does and have a real shot of finding something worth money, and they loved the Brenham story. I cautioned them that what we were doing at Brenham really isn't what the average family could do on the weekend to make money, and the producer quickly shot back Oh, we know that, but this story is so cool we want to do it anyway. The way the production company found out about us, wasn't initially from the other media, but from someone in the meteorite world that tipped them off. But I am sure that the previous media reports helped establish our legitimacy as a good story. In the mean time WIRED Magazine ran a feature story on me that lead to a segment with Geoff and myself on the pilot TV show of WIRED Science on PBS. That led to the L.A. Times doing a front page story about me. Then the morning the L.A. Times story ran, Ruth Riven, an executive producer at LMNO Productions in L.A., sat down to breakfast and opened her newspaper. Ruth read the story and thought Hey, maybe a TV series about meteorite hunting could work? And she contacted me. Now, leading up to that, Geoff and I were pumping different angles for TV promotion. After doing the Cash and Treasures program, we thought we could do a TV series, at least we wanted to give it a shot. We talked with the field producer of the Cash and Treasures program, and he liked the idea. Well, he at least said he liked the idea, and the idea was put on the back burner until our episode actually aired 8 months later. After our episode ran (and re-ran) with the 15 other first season shows, we were told the Meteorite Hunting episode consistently did double the

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Men Promotion
Good heavens, Steve! That reads almost as you'd feel to have to justify for your shows. Absolutely zero need for this. Already in the 19th century it was cognized, that one has to make aware the knowledge about meteorites to an audience as broad as possible, to generate more meteorite finds. Nininger, now celebrated as pioneer and founder of American meteoritics popularized meteorites, Haag brought them to TV... I'd wish to watch such a series here in Germany too. For people getting to know better about meteorites, that meteorites would be held more dear, so that perhaps even the museums and universities would easier receive funds for meteorites, as here in Europe most of them suffered a complete cut-back. Unfortunately I can't receive these channels here and I haven't seen not a single episode :-( Maybe now in summer in Romania, where e.g. discovery is fed in most cable-TV-nets. There I saw once Haag. So the next day half of the kids at school knew what a meteorite is (and what I'm trading). Cheers! GREAT trailer! I don't get the Science channel though so I hope you DVD this for sale! Kudos to all involved! Tom --- I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.' -- Bob Newhart http://home.roadrunner.com/~kb2sms/ __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
