Joe, Interesting for sure. It looks like much like ore. I didn't catch if it was magnetically attractive. However that is the reason we have anomalous achondirtes to search through. Like you offered please keep us informed. Good Luck! The metal reflects just like in chondrites. I just have trouble getting it to reflect and show the matrix at the same time so I manipulate the light so that I can get pictures of the metal and pics of the matris/inclusions. Hi Joe and all, I'm not too sure though if these specimens contain metalic metal in them. The inclusions are surounded by a silvery material which may be something else. Give this a little more time and I'll try to have an answer for you. Hi Joe, It seems there is a shelf live on the allertest people can buy so you about have to wait until you have a number of items needing testing then order the kit one at a time for testing. I also HIGHLY recommend seeing O. Richard Norton's book "Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites" as he has some household items you can safely use to test suspect specimens. I have a small 10.2 gram slice of this on eBay. It could be a chance to get it at a really good price. If it is a meteorite, it will be worth a lot. It is being tested both at ASU and by Professor A. Basu, who is testing a thin slice of it. He thinks it may be a new find. If it turns out not to be a new meteorite, it will be a rare terrestrial stone, it tests pos for Ni, we all know that there is only 1 know terrestrial stone that contains native FeNi, and it is found only in Syberia. If it does turn out to be a meteorite, it will probably be a really rare type, I have not been able to find another meteorite that resembles this stone. Hi Steve- I'm not sure what you mean by 'positive' result on a streak test. If a streak was left (a positive result), then you don't have a meteorite. If no streak was left maybe you do, but wouldn't that be a negative result? From your pictures I'll bet you got a dark grey streak. Re: [meteorite-list] possible new illinois meteorite find
Bob is right, Steve. The glaciers brought down tons of magnetite from the great iron deposits of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin and Michigan's U.P. The stuff is all over; everything from pebbles to boulders. And a lot of it weathers dark, looking a little bit like a fusion crust. Good luck, but don't get your hopes up.
