Re: [meteorite-list] wot we need....

2006-12-04 Thread mark ford
Hi,

Good idea, to have a single meteorite auction site that [everyone] uses, but my
only thoughts on this would be, how exactly would you be able to define 'an
honest dealer'? - if you would rely purely on the ebay style 'feedback system'
then that's been done - so why not just better filter your search results on
ebay?

Who would you allow into the forum and who would you not? - Surely if you let
just anyone sell in this alternative sales place, it would end up like another
ebay, only quieter, alternatively if you only let the big players in then the
prices would remain high and I doubt the bargains would appear, so people
probably would stick with ebay!

what you need is volume of material being sold at once, that's what creates
bargain (and thus more people using it), when someone sells 20 slices of the
same fall on eBay, and only 10 people want any - that's when a bargain can be
had!

All actions depend on 'who's in the room' at the end of the day so lots of
people looking is what you would need to make it a success.

Good idea though, and I agree Ebay has become diluted with tat, (but caution -
some of that tat is just like what we used to buy when we first started out!).

Thanks Alex - glad you cleared that up  - of course - this is what I was sort
of meaning - a place for good prices, honest materials and accredited dealers
in a safe forum.
Of course, a bargain is exactly that - a bargain (or, as you said it wouldn't
be a bargain, but the actual price!)
I guess I was just thinking aloud about an alternative sales place to Fleabay -
not to take away from dealers' sites and thier customer base, of course, just
an alternative to eBay!

Dear Dave,

no bad intention, of course! What I just meant to say was: the price has to be
fair, a bargain may a bargain, but a bargain is not the LAW, it is the
EXCEPTION (...as else it would not be a "bargain" by definition..:-)). We small
little creatures on this very Earth all wish to survive some way or the other,
and everyone should have his/her little fortune, but when it comes down to e.g.
such a tiny little issue as aquiring a meteorite from dealer xyz, the whole
system of fairness of trade for ALL the participants in a contract should still
be active and workable for the future.

And btw: you will always find strange people in every market place, may they be
Big Brains from windy cities or odd Mars sellers from elsewhere. This is what
you can´t avoid even with a good intention of creating any new list...

I was looking towards the idea of a multi-dealer environment rather than
just a single dealer, but yep, Michael, you and Anne and loadsa other
dealers are fantastic
I just had a vision of a Harrods-equivalent environment for meteorites,
without all of the klutzes and rubbish sellers who cause so much grief!

Try this site, which is one of the very oldest:

and

Which is relatively new but backed 100% by an honest
dealer with an excellent record.
If you don't see what you like at either of these two places,
email me directly and let me know what you are looking for
and what you want to pay. I have often provided exactly what
is asked for, including a photo to verify desirability within
48 hrs. of contact.

I do not need to be told to "think twice" thanks - I have had enough

Absolutely! I buy form dealers - but I have to say that not everyone who
wants to sell is a dealer so has no way of showcasing thier stuff (me, for
example!)
And, to be honest, I have not actually got any great deals thru dealers -
maybe I didn't negotiate hard enough, but I think the best I got is free
shipping - at least Fleabay allowed me to grab bargains (like the 30g PV
slice for $175).
Just thinking aloud I guess...!

Why not just buy from dealer's websites like the "ol days"? You know,
you do not always HAVE to pay what is asked (even at Wal-Fart). Try
bargaining. Most of us relish in it!

Dear Dave;
In my opinion, the fleabay and IMCA connection didn't seem to couple
together as effectively as some of us had hoped. In the ideal world, it
would have been a good answer but in the world of lawyers and
lawsuits.well, a seal representing not much from an auction

I have a george bush toast specimen for sale, it goes well with milk.
