Ahh. I have people try this. I found the best way to deal with them is
to force all http from them to undesirable places (the rest is blocked
out right). Every now and then one will call me up and explain "I was
uh, on your network and all I can get is this goat web site" "Yea, you
were doing more then that, however in light of your honesty I will forgo
the trespass paper work, its a $100 connect fee + data used". Most of
them cough up the cash.

right now they are basically IP hunting. As soon as I find them and place
restrictions on the IP. The find another. I use static IP's so their not
getting DHCP.

What is being hacked? If they have any skills at all, they know how to
change a mac address. MAC based block lists do not work for long

Does anyone know of a way to find a hackers MAC address and block all

[Mikrotik] Ubiquiti Bullet2

2009-01-15 Thread Rick Smith
Hey guys, long time no see. Happy New Year to all.

I'm designing a WiFi system for an apartment building, and I'm planning on
hotspotting it all with Mikrotik at the headend.

I can do two things; 1) get a Cisco managed AP system, or 2) put in UBNT
Bullets with Omnis for the COST of a Cisco system

I like option 2 :)

Anyone used the bullets yet ? Are they really going to be "that good" ?

[Mikrotik] Mikrotik Hotspot System

2009-01-15 Thread Rick Smith
Is the user manager solution in Mikrotik suitable for billing users for
hourly/daily/monthly/etc... times on a hotspot ?

We're wiring up an apartment building, and the owner now wants the WiFi deal
and really wants it to be hands-off ...

What is "that good"? I mean, at under $40 for an AP, you can't expect a
LOT. :-) Either way, you can't find them at the moment. Ubiquiti has
had a delay of some sort getting them out the door. They were expected
over a month ago, IIRC.

Re: [Mikrotik] Ubiquiti Bullet2

2009-01-15 Thread Sam Tetherow
I've never used ubiquity equipment as an AP but I would be pretty leery
of using a $40 piece of equipment as an AP in an environment for a
paying customer. I have gone with cheap end equipment (cheap for 802.11)
and never had anything other than headaches with it. Under power issues,
overpower issues, overheating issues, generally needing resets.

The best I have come up with for 'low-end' APs has been MT Crossroads
still a bit on the expensive side but where I have installed them I
haven't had the phone calls and I don't have to train clients/customers
to powercycle the APs on occasion.

Just thought I would pass it on. I have spent thousands of dollars in
'cheap' equipment that was just that... cheap. Nothing wrong with
operating on a budget, we all have those issues, but it is one thing to
go with cheap end CPE where you can ask the person to power cycle first
and if it is a consistent issue to call and we can replace it. It is
another when a hotel/motel/apt manager is constantly having to futz with
the equipment and deal with complaining clients when things don't work.
Especially if they are looking for something that is low-maintenance,
spend now, the headaches of hidden cost of tech support will far
outweigh the additional cost of APs.

Re: [Mikrotik] Ubiquiti Bullet2

2009-01-15 Thread Randall Roberts
We were skeptical when we started using NS5's. Use them more and more, and
not a single failure, other than one POE wall wart going out.

We've installed a couple of Bullet5's and were very surprised at their
performance. As always, time will tell.

I wouldn't use either as an AP as they don't have much in the way of
registration info for stations, compared to the MT ap's.
