Re: [Mikrotik] 5betaReleaseXX

2011-03-28 Thread Chupaka
I agree, it's silly. Wise decision would be to install ROSv4, which doesn't
see almost any hardware on that new Intel platform ;) No ethernet interfaces
= no problems :D

P.S. We run >5k clients, and it works for them.

2011-03-25 Thread Louis Arsenault
There is a rumor going around that V4 QOS is unstable/unreliable with
cpu above 35% ?
Anyone else comment on that? For this reason I am looking at upgrading
our core to V5.

Every OS sucks. One of my favorite videos.

Compare support :)

We'd be quite happy to buy a nice support contract that gave us 24-hour
e-mail response with MT, The amount of time I've spent trying to debug a
fault while I wait for support to look at the RIF.

And that's the difference in price. Plus the corp jets, seven layers
of executive staff and long roll out times. I don't think a comparison
of Cisco and MT is anywhere in this universe, except as to how they
actually accomplish the same task with some version of their respective
firmwares...I'm just worried that MT has lost their focus in doing
too many things. Granted ipV6 is a huge step, but maybe nothing else
should have been attempted at the same time.

Re: [Mikrotik] 5betaReleaseXX

2011-03-25 Thread Tristram Cheer
It's more the quality of the releases. IPv6 routes were meant to be fixed in
rc11, it's only in rc12 that they are tested fixed but now thats caused
issues with IPv4 BGP even when v6 is disabled.

Add into the mix the fact that MT's changelog aren't worth even being used
at toilet paper and you have the perfect storm for complex interaction
faults.

But then again we are cautious with rolling out to the core, Most of our
gear is running 4.10 and was only upgrade to that in the past 3-4 months
after detailed testing. As a result we dont get hit with random issues
months down the the track and our core has uptimes measured in years and
months (Alot of the core was running 3.30 with 6month + uptimes before the
4.10 upgrade)

Re: [Mikrotik] 5betaReleaseXX

2011-03-25 Thread Ryan Spott
At least Mtik labels their stuff with beta, have you ever fought and
fought with a cisco only to learn that the most recent 'stable'
software is really not?

All OSes suck. (period)

We are doing 5ghz 20mhz channels running nstreme. So far seems good. I may,
for the hell of it, upgrade to some newer firmware.

The 5-RC series is mostly stable. There are some things (wireless, for
example) that are not working as well. The basic routing stuff is
working well, though. I have a number of customers running it in
production without problems. I won't go so far as to say I'd recommend
it for everyone, but it does work well for the most part if you stay
away from wireless and some parts of IPv6.

We run nearly 100 towers with around 1000 clients and wouldn't dream of

No... all of our wireless links are running v4 (because we saw no reason
to upgrade them). We are running V5 on GigE based routers, and only
because they are using newer chipsets that required V5.

2011-03-25 Thread Jon Auer
I don't see a problem with it if you've tested it under load the lab and it
works for your use.

Also ROS5 adds chipset and NIC drivers so some platforms won't work on ROS4.

Re: [Mikrotik] 5betaReleaseXX

2011-03-25 Thread Travis Johnson
Because it's not unstable. All routers have been up for over 20 days now
without a single issue. Working perfectly. Of course, we subscribe to
the KISS model (keep it simple, stupid). Our routers do basic routing,
OSPF and a few queues, firewall and NAT rules. Nothing else. :)
