Re: [Mikrotik Users] Upgrade from 6.35.x to 6.42.6

2018-08-20 Thread Dave via Mikrotik-users

I have done production upgrades since for eva ago.
I never had an issue in upgrades except on x86 machines where the
drivers were updated an no longer supported older hardware like sfp modules.
Too easy roll back a few and order new sfps' and viola easy upgrade to
6.46.6

If your concerned about a router fail have one already updated with new
ROS and config on standby.

my 2 cents

Is there anything that may help with this? Tools, documentation,

with RoS automatically do the conversion of commands from the earlier
versions to the newest version?

Absolutely.

The biggest changes I recall are the rework of the bridge/switch system
which could change your config dramatically, but you should be able to
clearly see this in the config.

https://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?t=128915
"RouterOS 6.41 contains new bridge implementation that supports hardware
offloading (hw-offload).
This update will convert all interface "master-port" configuration into new
bridge configuration, and eliminate "master-port" option as such.
Bridge will handle all Layer2 forwarding and the use of switch-chip
(hw-offload) will be automatically turned on based on appropriate
conditions.
The rest of RouterOS Switch specific configuration remains untouched in
usual menus for now.
Please, note that downgrading to previous RouterOS versions will not
restore "master-port" configuration, so use backups to restore
configuration on downgrade."

I took 5.x routers directly to 6.40.6 earlier this year. It just worked. I
haven't upgraded anything to the latest (non-bugfix) because I like
sleeping at night, but I know a lot of people run current.

If your worried it not functioning after upgrade take the prod-config and
setup a couple of other mikrotik's and get a working 'prod-lab' on the
bench on 6.35 and upgrade it while watching it/checking it for
functionality.

When I see you ask:

I think you're asking if your setup scripts (either hand-coded or exported)
from pre-6.42 routers will import on post-6.42 routers. Depending on what
features you use, the answer is no.

I have seen changes in the CLI generated for master/slave ethernets and
bridges, as expected, but there were also incompatible changes in /tool
mac-server in 6.41, and I think one other place I can't recall now. In all
cases, CLI scripts generated before and after the boundary release are refused
by routers running releases on the other side of the boundary.

In general, MT isn't user-friendly about later versions accepting earlier
scripts, even when they could do so easily (e.g., the additional field in /ip
firewall filter limit=… in 6.34, made mandatory for no apparent reason).

Of course, they did a pretty good job of converting the configuration of a
router to the new format during the upgrade process, but that doesn't help your
stored scripts.

2018-08-20 Thread Scott Reed via Mikrotik-users
Mikrotik has been know to make change to the syntax, so the new make
look different that the old.

I have upgraded 100s of units from as low as 4.15 incrementally to
6.42.8 without losing anything.  Not that they have much, but upgrades
just work.

You may not be able to copy the export to another version, though.

[Mikrotik Users] Upgrade from 6.35.x to 6.42.6

2018-08-20 Thread Sam Morris via Mikrotik-users
We have a number of devices to upgrade from 6.35 to 6.42. In testing the
upgrade in a lab, I'm finding many discrepancies in the "export" output.

The steps I took were:

(On the production router) export file=prod-config

- set up an identical spare router on the same RoS as the prod router,
reset its configuration, and copy/paste the output of the export command
from the prod router into the spare router

- upgrade the spare router to 6.42.6

- export the upgraded router config (export file=upgraded-spare)

After this, I compare the differences between the files exported on the
original production router (still running 6.35.x) and the upgraded spare
router (now running 6.42.6). When doing so, I see many differences, and
am concerned that when we upgrade the production routers that they will
no longer work.

Is there anything that may help with this? Tools, documentation, etc? Or
with RoS automatically do the conversion of commands from the earlier
versions to the newest version?

Thanks
Sam
