Except that the machine uses Intel Celeron/Xeon/Pentium and not G5. Had
my hopes up for a second or two there until I saw the actual spec sheet.

Re: : OpenBSD supported servers ?

2007-12-21 Thread Raimo Niskanen
Well, I did not plan to answer your question, just help you ask
the question better...

I run a HP DL140 G2 with OpenBSD 4.1 i386 and raided root disk
(raidframe), and a HP DL145 G3 with OpenBSD 4.1 amd64 MP.

The DL140 G2 is a bit old, and I recall there were solvable
problems booting OpenBSD 4.1 on a DL140 G3, I had to disable
some unrelated USB network device, but I think that problem
is fixed in OpenBSD 4.2.

The DL140 G2 has a 2.8 GHz Xeon and 2 GByte RAM. It runs
on itself pf, apache, sendmail, bind, mailman. These generate the
most load. It has almost no users - it is just a web server.

I have never tried Dell or IBM servers, but there have
been quirks for new hardware for HP servers, and perhaps
the lack of help querys for Dell servers is a good sign...

HP DL320G5P doesn't boot

2007-12-21 Thread RedShift

Hello all,

I've got a new DL320G5P to play with for a very short while, while I'm
waiting for the SAS controller cable to arrive (it's supposed to have
another OS on it, which shall remain nameless). So I have the luxury of
testing out this fine machine, but it doesn't boot under OpenBSD. It
hangs at the following point:

uhid at uhidev4 not configured

When entering the UKC prompt I can't type anything, only garbage comes out.

When I remove my USB keyboard and mouse, the kernel stops at:

uhub6 at uhub 1 port 2: HP Virtual Hub, rev 1.10/0.01, addr 3

So I used a linux distribution installer CD to gather some more information:

Can you connect a serial console, perhaps play with serial console settings
in the BIOS and catch a dmsg from OpenBSD's failed boot?

This is not current, please try current on this system. There's been a lot of
changes since release and this system may just work using current, in

help to install OpenBSD/amd64 on a acer aspire 1500

2007-12-21 Thread Mathieu Stumpf
Hello,

OpenBSD/amd64 won't boot on my acer aspire 1500. I found that someone
had the same problem[1] but I didn't find a solution. The laptop
configuration is :
Athlon 64 3200+(2 GHz) ; 512 Mo DDR SDRAM 333 ; HD 60 Go ; screen 15"
SXGA + ; 802.11g, FireWire, 4USB, 1PC-Card, 1 DVD-RW.

As said, this seems to be the same problem that with the acer aspire
1524wlmi[1], here is what I've got when I boot :

CD-ROM: 9F
Loading /4.2/AMD64/CDBOOT
probing: pc0 com0 mem[638k 509M a20=on]
disk: fd0 hd0+* cd0
>> OpenBSD/amd64 CDBOOT 2.00
boot>
booting cd0a:/4.2/amd64/bsd.rd: 2225136+464495+2742160+0+331408 [80
+229320+142471]=0x9dae30
entry point at 0x1001e0 [7205c766, 3404, 24448612, b2c0a304]

So, according to the FAQ[2], I succesfully load MBR and PBR. The problem
occurs when /boot try to load /bsd. You'll notice that unlike what say
the FAQ, the boot process doesn't begin with "Loading..." or
"Loading;..". I suppose that is simply because this is not the i386
version (I didn't find the same documentation for amd64).

I tryed to boot with 3 CD burned from :
  * CD42.iso from /pub/OpenBSD/4.2/amd64
  * install42.iso from /pub/OpenBSD/4.2/amd64
  * install42.iso from /pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/amd64

I also tried to boot with -d, -s and -c. I thought at least -c would
work, since what I understood was that it enables to change things to
load with the kernel. Maybe I just typed something wrong... I wrote
"boot -c", at the boot prompt, is it right?

Well, finaly, it all results in the same freeze.

I tryed to contact the guy who had the (probably) same problem, but it
seems the email his no-longer valid, so I can't ask him if he found a
solution.

So if anyone have any clue of where I should lead my investigations to
find what the problem his, and hopefuly resolve it, that's would be very
kind to help me.

Best regards.

Is this possibly an error from the CD or the CVS site?

Here's the full dmesg with verbose enabled at the UKC prompt (UKC works

First look for :

1. sysctl kern.maxfiles, kern.maxfilesperproc, kern.maxproc,
kern.maxusers ... maybe you also need net.inet.ip.portrange.first and
net.inet.ip.portrange.last. Look for sysctl -ad
2. ulimit

Check the manual pages for login.conf(5) and friends. Also search
mailing list archives and the web and you should find examples of limits
that people have used for various daemons, how to start daemons with a
given login class, etc.

Is it possible to update the tree fetched from the CD with this server
(broken?), or do I need to use the .usa server for the entire download?

It looks like your box is an "upgraded" version of DL320G I have. OpenBSD
works on mine after some kernel tuning - there are couple threads about it
in the archive. I think you need to enable acpi and (may be) disable uhid
(in my case it's uhci) in a kernel. If it doesn't help with amd64 kernel
you can try i386 (because your cpu is Intel).

I don't see a reason for all that work in a first place, because you
don't really need an OpenBSD on that box (you are saying that it will get
an another OS anyway).

Hi,

My intent was improving OpenBSD: I have no code writing skills but every
once in a while I have access to hardware like this. Seeing if
everything works is my contribution to this project.

If anoncvs1.ca is broken, then I would expect that we would all have serious
problems with our trees, since that is the machine that
redistributes cvs.openbsd.org, which is located in Theo's basement. When cvs
is really broken, it usually just lasts a few hours. The likelihood that the
whole tree has been busted for a week with no developers noticing is pretty
slim.

And if you are on Shaw's network as a customer, the University of Alberta is
on-net with Shaw. Just check out whatever tag you want freshly and don't
worry about it.

But if you are having issues building, then you are probably having a
source/binary synchronization issue.

there must be a specific reason for this, matthieu@ probably doesn't

so you either install amd64, patch and rebuild xenocara, or just
build install the "intel" module manually:

cd xenocara/driver/xf86-video-intel
make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper obj
make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper depend
make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper all
make -f Makefile.bsd-wrapper install

you should probably just install an amd64 snapshot to test it first.

I am not sure whether this has any relation to this problem. I initially
assumed that the mistake was mine (it usually is) and probably due to some
misconfiguration or path problem on my build machine. But it looks like I am
not able to compile -current downloaded recently but -current from a couple
of weeks ago (Dec 6, 2007) works without any problems.

To doubly verify this I installed a fresh version of OpenBSD from the 4.2 CD
on a new server and when I tried to build the kernel (-current source
downloaded from ftp.ca.openbsd.org) I got the same error as on my build
machine.

I did not have any problem building the kernel when I copied the source from
CD3 on this new server. The files all appear to be in the right places and
the paths look OK.

My previous download from ftp.ca.openbsd.org was on Dec 6, 2007 and at that
time I had no problems compiling the kernel.

If anyone has insight into why this error occurs please let me know.

Thanks very much,

Vijay

It looks like your box is an "upgraded" version of DL320G I have. OpenBSD
works on mine after some kernel tuning - there are couple threads about it
in the archive. I think you need to enable acpi and (may be) disable uhid
(in my case it's uhci) in a kernel. If it doesn't help with amd64 kernel
you can try i386 (because your cpu is Intel).

I don't see a reason for all that work in a first place, because you
don't really need an OpenBSD on that box (you are saying that it will get
an another OS anyway).

Uh-oh, another screw up on my part. Thanks very much for pointing this out --
you saved me a lot of time and I really appreciate that. I will go through

We used HP DL380 G4's at client sites before. But because of some limitations
with the SmartArray 6402 and 6i controllers, ciss cannot provide status
information if there is more than one volume. So I switched over to using
Dell 2950's with PERC controllers. OpenBSD seems to be a bit slower while
booting up on Dell 2950's compared to HP but that has not been a problem yet.
for us. Since you are not concerned about RAID, DL380 G4's should work well
(I don't have a lot of experience with the G5 models)

dhcpd misleading documentation about the interaction between "fixed-address" statement and -L option

2007-12-21 Thread Max Hayden Chiz
Unless I am doing something silly, dhcpd(8) may not be accurate
regarding how the "fixed-address" statement and -L option
inter-operate.

Yesterday I discovered that when you assign a DHCP client an IP
address using the "fixed-address" command, dhcpd does not create an
entry in dhcpd.leases. As a result, it will not enter the IP address
into the pf table specified by the -L option. This seems to be the
intended behavior, but it isn't documented anywhere. In fact dhcpd(8)
says "[e]ach client is assigned a lease", implying that even clients
using "fixed-address" should be given a lease entry.

Is this something that should be fixed or am I reading the man pages
wrong (or worse have I messed something up on my end)?

SPAMD legitimate mail statistics

2007-12-21 Thread Jeff Santos
Hi,

Is it possible to know how many SMTP legitimate SMTP connections
have passed through SPAMD?

In a setup like,

no rdr on $ext_if proto tcp from to any port smtp
rdr pass on $ext_if proto tcp from any to any port smtp \
   -> 127.0.0.1 port spamd

Can I assume the number of evaluations of the 'no rdr on'
rule is a correct value for this? Is there another way to
find this out?

Thanks.

Regards,

Jeff

Fatal page fault during boot on Toshiba A200 1M7

2007-12-21 Thread Key

Hi,

I'm trying to install OpenBSD 4.2 on my Toshiba A200 1M7 (Intel Core2
Duo T7100 1.86Ghz,1024Mb, 160Gb, 12.1", Intel GMA X3100 DO 128Mb,
DVD-RW) laptop and almost failed

to boot installer from CD.

During bootload I see:

...
uvm_fault(0x.,0x.,0,1) -> o
fatal page fault (6) in supervisor mode
trap type 6 code 0 ...
panic: trap type 6, code 0, pc=fde4d

The operation system has halted.
Press any key to reboot.
...

The full output of panic with addresses can be found here:
http://parix.timeold.ru/IMG012.jpg

I wonder, what additional info I can give to resolve this problem? May
be I shall install linux and give you dmesg?

Please, help me to solve the problem or submit a correct bug report (i
can't use sendbug as you see ;) ).

Sorry for my bad English,

Thank you in advance,

OpenBSD 4.1 - NAT + ttl=0 trouble

2007-12-21 Thread gentoo1
Hello :)

I use OpenBSD 4.1 for gateway for my laptop. I set in my pf.conf file :
nat on fxp0 from rl0:network to any -> fxp0 ..and other rules. OK and
I have Internet on my laptop. Worked fine! But yesterday my ISP set ttl to
0 ---> ttl=0... and now i try to change this value but unsuccessful...

I put this in my pf.conf but ttl is still zero.:

scrub out on $ext_if min-ttl 10

scrub in on $ext_if all fragment reassemble min-ttl 15 max-mss 1400
I use both options : in and out - unsuccessful...

pfctl -sr show :

scrub in all fragment reassemble
scrub in on fxp0 all min-ttl 15 max-mss 1400 fragment reassemble
scrub out on fxp0 all min-ttl 15 max-mss 1400 fragment reassemble
scrub in on fxp0 all no-df fragment reassemble
scrub on fxp0 all reassemble tcp fragment reassemble

And ping form openbsd to nabble.com is with tll=0:
ping nabble.com
PING nabble.com (216.139.236.162): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 216.139.236.162: icmp_seq=0 ttl=0 time=165.931 ms
64 bytes from 216.139.236.162: icmp_seq=1 ttl=0 time=164.822 ms
--- nabble.com ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/std-dev = 164.822/165.376/165.931/0.687 ms
==> And on my laptop I don't see anything behind openbsd gw.

In linux case --> I just add this rule in iptables and i change ttl
successfully :
iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -j TTL --ttl-inc 2.

But please let me know how I can change ttl in OpenBSD.

Kind Regards

You've got some other scrub rules:

> scrub in on fxp0 all min-ttl 15 max-mss 1400 fragment reassemble
> scrub out on fxp0 all min-ttl 15 max-mss 1400 fragment reassemble

It looks like first matching scrub rule wins, so you need to
remove/re-order some of the others.

If memtest doesn't find a problem, this just means that memtest
didn't find a problem, it does not mean things are definitely ok.

I didn't read it literally as if no offers were received throughout

I am no authority but looking at the grammar section in pf.conf(5), I
would guess that it is correct behavior.

nat-rule = [ "no" ] "nat" [ "pass" [ "log" [ "(" logopts ")" ] ] ]
  [ "on" ifspec ] [ af ]
  [ protospec ] hosts [ "tag" string ] [ "tagged"
string ]
  [ "->" ( redirhost | "{" redirhost-list "}" )
  [ portspec ] [ pooltype ] [ "static-port" ] ]

binat-rule = [ "no" ] "binat" [ "pass" [ "log" [ "(" logopts
")" ] ] ]
  [ "on" interface-name ] [ af ]
  [ "proto" ( proto-name | proto-number ) ]
  "from" address [ "/" mask-bits ] "to" ipspec
  [ "tag" string ] [ "tagged" string ]
  [ "->" address [ "/" mask-bits ] ]

rdr-rule = [ "no" ] "rdr" [ "pass" [ "log" [ "(" logopts ")" ] ] ]
  [ "on" ifspec ] [ af ]
  [ protospec ] hosts [ "tag" string ] [ "tagged"
string ]
  [ "->" ( redirhost | "{" redirhost-list "}" )
  [ portspec ] [ pooltype ] ]

You can see that there is no 'protospec' token in binat-rule.

Because that offer could not be confirmed: the server that made the
offer didn't respond to the client's request. Servers _may_ offer the
same address to multiple clients concurrently; clients can only use an
address after it has been confirmed. So given that it can't use that
address, what do you expect it to do other than restart discovery?

The permissions on /observer.sh were rw for owner (root) only. This was
also the case with all of the .sh files in that directory and others.

I removed the /usr/src directory and all contents, and reloaded the
source files again from the CD and checked the permissions.
All of the .sh files now had the proper 755 permissions.

When I then updated from [EMAIL PROTECTED] and when I
checked the permissions again, they had reverted back to rw only.

All these were performed logged in as root.
