Re: X won't work

2009-05-06 Thread BOG BOG
May this is not the case but it might be possible to have many instances of the
server ending with the same error.

Try killing all instances, and then try again.

If there are many instances, trying to start another one merely fails because
there already exists /tmp/.X0-lock

From the bottom of the error message it seems it is a lock problem.

And then again may be this is not the case.

Re: Fujitsu-siemens machine freezes

Hello,

I have followed your suggestions regarding -current.

amd64 -current (GENERIC.MP) does no longer hangs when trying to detach re0, but
now, re0 is sometimes detected correctly and sometimes not:

I give the messages in both cases:
Failure:
re0 an pci2 dev0 function 0 Realtek 8168 rev 0x02: RTL8168C/8111C (0x3c00),
apic2 int 16 (irq 11), address 00:19:99:54:31:7f
re0: PHY write failed
re0: PHY write failed
re0: no PHY found!
re0: reset never completed!
re0 detached

Success:
re0 an pci2 dev0 function 0 Realtek 8168 rev 0x02: RTL8168C/8111C (0x3c00),
apic2 int 16 (irq 11), address 00:19:99:54:31:7f
rgephy0 at re0 phy 7: RTL8169S/8110S PHY, rev. 2

the controller is: 10/100/1000 MBit/s Realtek RTL8111C, so i think the kernel
sometimes initializes the controller with a driver and sometimes with a 'close
enough driver', and in the later case it works.

i will also try tonight a freshly backed i386 release, which initially failed
to build due to a link error(but the kernel and userland completed flawlessly),
however a second attempt with a new update from cvs completed successfully.

i'll let you now the results.

thank you for your support,

bogdan

p.s.
please let me know if somebody needs the port 8283 opened anymore.

Re: Fujitsu-siemens machine freezes

2009-01-27 Thread BOG BOG
Hello everybody,

yes Sam, you are right, but this bios is a little bit different, there is only
a setting regarding SATA: SATA0 legacy. with this option enabled, the kernel
detects the hard drive, but is not able to initialize it in order to be
partitioned . So i disabled this option and it is working properly (this
happens for both kernels and i think that legacy code is no longer supported by
the kernels, which is not an issue).

I tried an official image i386 installation image on different media and has
the same problem.

I tried the amd64 kernel and it works flawlessly, and detects more cpu flags
than i386 kernel(including NX flag); thanks Stuart for this suggestion.

The system is up and running, showing both cores on top command. Very nice.

I put both dmesg on these addresses:
http://swordfish.rotld.ro:8283/dmesgs/amd64_44_dmesg
http://swordfish.rotld.ro:8283/dmesgs/i386_44_dmesg

There are two issues regarding both kernels:
1. command 'halt' does halts the system but the keyboard, which is on usb, does
not responds anymore, so the system cannot be restarted. but this is not a
problem, as 'reboot', 'shutdown -r now' reboots the system properly, and 'halt
-p' halts the system and shuts down the power, which is what i want;
2. the lan controller on board i think is faulty causing both kernels to panic.
this si not a problem because i disabled it from bios, as i want to buy a real
network card. the diagnose message is (i wrote it down on a piece of paper):
panic: config_detach: force detach of re0 failed (45).
i am not able to do any 'trace' an 'ps' commands, here, in this situation,
because the keyboard freezes.

please let me know if the above dmesg messages are accessible through that
address and port configuration as it might be filtered.

this is my machine at work and it is not supposed to be visible from outside,
but hey we a trying to solve an issue here, so if we can make it visible, why
not do so? just let me know if you can access it.

Thank you very much for your support and suggestions

bogdan

hello,

i'll try to extract the dmesg out that machine.

tonight i want to try also the amd64 install image, and i want to make dmesg
dump for both i386 and amd64.

thank you for answering,

a dmesg is absolutely needed to diagnose your problem (or
 rather the
 computer's ;-) )
could you perhaps make pictures of the dmesg?

Try a different one. If it still fails with -current you

I tried to install OpenBSD4.4 i386.

The instalation image was created by me, and it worked fine for an update from
4.3 to 4.4. version, but on different machine, the one i worked on.

I'll try to get a stick and save the dmesg for fujitsu machine.

What version of OpenBSD are you trying to install? If it
 isn't a
-current snapshot then please try a -current snapshot.

Are you trying to install i386 OpenBSD or amd64 OpenBSD? In
 either
case try the other one. :-).

 A dmesg would really help.
