Who cares?

Why is this thread still being discussed? Install ViM and bash, and
alias "ifconfig" to "ifconfig -A", and /you/ have /your/ perfect
system.

Most would argue that at this point you've already lost the security game.

So the attacker could enter in single
user mode, without the need for the root
password,

He could also boot off of removable media with any OS that has support
for FFS, mount your partitions, and copy over or change any file he
wishes.

Of if it is a typically-sized micro, he can just leave with it.

Or if it's a vax, he may ride away with it
(http://buscaluz.org/photos/Misc/vax.png).

Computer security has to include physical security, too.

new AMD64 rig won't run i386

2006-04-26 Thread Matthew Jenove
I have a new PC (Athlon 64 on a Abit KN8 Ultra mobo
(http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=285))
that I wanted to test drive OpenBSD on. My first attempt involved a
harddrive with a fresh 3.9 i386 install; however, that failed to
finish booting (hand-copied dmesg below). I then tried booting off of
the i386 install CD only to have the boot fail at the same point. I
tried both kernels (bsd on the hd & bsd.rd on the CD) with both "fail
safe" BIOS settings and with every possible device disabled.

Finally tried booting off of the amd64 CD; install went smooth,
everything seems to work.

I don't know if "not working with a 32 bit kernel" is an issue, but if
anyone wants me to test something I can do that.

Because it is administrivia more suitable for a unix newbies list?

man afterboot, then searching for "network" will point you to
ifconfig, which would be the right way to figure out the IP
address(es) -- where as the "where did that ping come from" approach
breaks behind NATing (as you already mentioned).

And an easier solution than the one asked about would be to point a
web browser at http://whatismyip.com/
