Re: [OT]: good home switch?
How about a Dell PowerConnect 2216? They are currently $49US for an unmanaged 16port that can be rackmounted with the included hardware. Quiet and fairly reliable.
Re: Crypto cards
Thanks Theo!! Ever time I learn something like this it really makes me appreciate OpenBSD even more. Maxim, Dave - I found mine on eBay. There is a chap that must have a truck load of them as he posts two a week. Opening bid is $24.99US with a buy it now price of $49.99US. Not too bad for an entry level crypto card. Here is the link to his current posting: http://cgi.ebay.com/Broadcom-BCM95805-VPN-Accelerator-PCI-card-for-PDS-5xxx_W0QQitemZ5799633256QQcategoryZ11182QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem He always lists these cards with the same header.
Crypto cards
I recently acquired a Broadcom 5805 for use with my OpenBSD box. Googling for the past hour has not quite yielded the info I need, though I may not be hitting the right keywords, so I'm turning here for a bit of help. Will I need to recompile any of my applications i.e. OpenSSL, OpenSSH, OpenVPN, etc. in order for them to benefit from the card?

Adaptec 6944a or Sun "Happy Meal"
I need to add another ethernet card to the box, but have run out of PCI slots. Currently there is an Intel dual port (fxp) in there and I'm considering one of the above as a replacement. Could anyone with experience with one of these cards comment as to the pro's/con's of either card? Steve

Any recommendations on a compatible unit?
LCDPROC
I'm interested in using an LCD on my OBSD box to view a few stats. The box already runs headless so this would just be a means to check stats at a glance. Has anyone here used LCDProc or something similar? If so what comments do you have? As to hardware - serial or USB? Which is better supported under OBSD 3.7? Steve
OT Snap servers
My apologies for this being OT but google so far has not yieleded the needed results. I have the opportunity buy a used Snap Server 1000 at an attractive price. Attractive because it has no power cord and no hard drive. I can resolve teh power cord issue, but I'm having problems finding info about replacing the drive. At first it appeared you could not just go out and buy a drive, Meridian/Quantum/Snap/Adaptec did something to prevent it, but then I found a few sites that said it could be done. Two said you just plugged in a new hard drive, which seemed just too good to be true. The others had a link to a solution but those links are dead. I was considering one of these devices as a means to backup various data from my OBSD machine. Is there anyone on the list who can comment on installing an after market drive in a Snap 1000? Steve
Re: External, USB hard drives
Any comments on the Buslink drives? I found a site selling both 1.1 and 2.0 drives for a some-what reasonable price. Seems like all the USB 2.0 stuff is 120GB or greater and $100 and up. Since I'm primarily backing up about 1MB of data I'm not sure I need that much capacity Any suggestions on something under $100?
External, USB hard drives
I'd like to attach an external USB hard drive to my 3.7 machine so that I can back various files on a scheduled basis. Not having used a USB drive before thought I would ask here about them first. Generally speaking are they all compatible? Are there specific brands/models to stay away from? Steve
Re: Authpf Help
Brandon, I have authpf working for RDP to my machine at the house. It needed these lines to work for me. Hopefully they will help you too. /etc/authpf/users/steve/authpf.rules #variables ext_if = "fxp0" xp_machine = "192.168.1.107" # redirection to ms rdp rdr on $ext_if inet proto tcp from $user_ip to ($ext_if) port 3389 -> $xp_machine # pf additions pass in on $ext_if inet proto tcp from $user_ip to $xp_machine port 3389 modulate state --end- -/etc/pf.conf (edited)- rdr-anchor "authpf/*" anchor "authpf/*" end- My pf.conf file only needed the two authpf statements. Other than these two things the only other I had thing I had to do was modify /etc/dhcpd.conf so that machines had a specific IP when they booted so that users could RDP to them from outside.
OpenBSD users group in Tucson, AZ
Is there anyone here on the list from Tucson, AZ, and if so would you have any interest in forming a local OBSD users group? If so please contact me offlist. Steve
Re: 4port Realtek nic
darn. I figured it was too good to be true. Thanks everyone.
4port Realtek nic
Compgeeks is offering a 4port RTL8139D nic for an attractive price. I know the 8139 chipset is supported, not quite so sure of the 8138D. Can anyone speak for these cards? The price is nice and a 4port nic would be very handy.
Re: Low power, 1U devices
Is anyone familiar with a company that sells a generic 1U case with one or two front, 5.25" bays? I've looked at calpc.com, and gtweb.net. The latter has a nice case, but only has a single 5.25" bay and their others have a combination of 3.5" and 5.25" bays. Alternatively has anyone tried to mod a Symantec VPN box and replaced its innards with something like a VIA board?

Once I did that make ran fine. I've enabled tcpwrappers and SSL support and both appear to be working nicely. The only problem remaining for me is that transfer speeds are painfully slow. My 5MB test file transferred at only 13KB in either direction. I have 1.5Mb/1.0Mb DSL at the house and 4Mb/4Mb here at the office so I think its the crypto overhead. I'm looking into a crypto card to see if that will improve performance.
Crypto cards
Would I get any benefit from a crypto accelerator card when using scp, OpenVPN or vsftpd compiled with SSL? Steve
Vsftpd compile error
I'm trying to compile vsftpd 2.03 with tcpwrappers and SSL support on OpenBSD 3.7. I've edited the builddefs.h per the readme.ssl file #ifndef VSF_BUILDDEFS_H #define VSF_BUILDDEFS_H #define VSF_BUILD_TCPWRAPPERS #define VSF_BUILD_PAM #define VSF_BUILD_SSL #endif /* VSF_BUILDDEFS_H */ but when I run make I get the error: # make gcc -c tcpwrap.c -O2 -Wall -W -Wshadow -idirafter dummyinc In file included from tcpwrap.c:15: /usr/include/tcpd.h:108: error: syntax error before "size_t" /usr/include/tcpd.h:115: error: syntax error before "in_addr_t" /usr/include/tcpd.h:116: error: syntax error before "dot_quad_addr" *** Error code 1 Stop in /tmp/vsftpd-2.0.3. Vsftpd compile error on 3.7
I'm trying to compile vsftpd 2.03 with tcpwrappers and SSL support on OpenBSD 3.7. Re: Low power, 1U devices
Both ironsystems and bwi look to have potential. As an alternative I may consider building my own. Can anyone recommend a vendor who sells a 1U case suited for the VIA boards, with 1-3 front 5.25" bays, and no power supply?
Low power, 1U devices
I've been reading up on the VIA Epia boards. Supposedly some that were built by nexcom.com were used at a previous hackathon. Is anyone aware of a vendor selling one of these boards in a 1U, rackmount enclosure with 4-8 front mounted ethernet ports; some sort of noiseless/fanless DC power supply and possibly a 20x2 LCD screen? Nexcom sells what they call a Nexgate 1041 which is close to what I'm looking for, but would prefer one of the low power VIA boards instead.
Broadcom crypto card
I have an opportunity to get a Broadcom BCM95805 card for an attractive price. The supported hardware pages lists a BCM5805, but not a BCM95805. Can anyone confirm if the the BCM95805 is compatible to the BCM5805? Steve
