Caution on Jacek Artymiak books.

2010-03-12 Thread Austin Hook
In 2003 Jacek Artymiak published in a book called Building Firewalls
with OpenBSD and PF -- one of the earliest physical publications about
using PF. This was sold on the OpenBSD website and many enjoyed having
that early hard copy reference.

However for much of the past 7 years since then, Jacek has been
promising a book called OpenBSD Command Line Companion. The problem is
that he keeps saying (or at least letting people think) it is finished,
and then takes orders and payments on his website: www.devguide.net,
either for a PDF or a hardcopy of it. Something similar has happened for
a purported 2nd revision of Firewalls.

We also have attempted to purchase these books for resale and have
nothing to show for our $2,500 pre-payment for 100 books. Meanwhile, I
have asked Jacek not to use my name or the Computer Shop when promoting
his book, however he continues to do so. Unless this situation is ever
resolved, please do not be misled by these references.

I had been in contact with him too. I sent some errata entries for
his excellent book on pf and he acknowledged these fixes. On november 12,
he mentioned on a private email that these fixes will be added to his
checklist for the 3rd edition of the book.

Never asked him about his health, however. On the second edition of
his book he acknowledges doctors Markiewicz and Misiewicz for looking
at his health issues. Don't know why it is ill and, I said, never
asked him... just I believe that it is not appropriate. But, as a
lot of people here, I am certainly worried about him. He is a kindly
member of the OpenBSD community.

Hope he is fine,
Igor.

I thought I heard that the 3rd edition of Jacek Artymiak book, openbsd+PF,
was coming out this spring. I have been watching for it but doesn't seem
to have happened. Did I hear wrong or did it get delayed? Any idea when
it will be out?

Thanks!
