[mk2-16v] Easter Egg Hunt in the Flea Market at Hershey Antique Car show.

2015-11-09 Thread charlier180
I think I mentioned in a previous post that I was taking my '87 GTI 16C to
the Fall Antique Car Show at Hershey, PA.
The show on Saturday was great. A good number of people stopped by my GTI
16V on the show field to talk about GTI 16Vs they owned, Salespeople who
sold them back in the day and VW Techs that worked at dealerships back in
the day that worked on them. Also on the field was a 1987 VW Cabriolet with
201 original miles. Sadly, back in the day the owner purchased the vehicle
and then was diagnosed with M.S. He kept the car but could not drive it. He
is not doing well at all these days but I did get to talk with him for a
few minutes at the show. It was great to see him enjoying himself.

This event is probably the largest event of it's kind in the U.S.A. and it
attracts people from all 50 states and many foreign countries. One of the
things I really enjoy about this show is the automotive flea market. With
9,000 vendor spaces (each 10'x30') and 1,200 cars for sale it is one HUGE
automotive toy store. Over the years I have resigned myself to the fact
that finding parts in the flea market for my old watercooled VWs was not
going to happen. Another couple I am friend with that owns air cooled VWs
love to go to events like this. The husband has always told me that finding
VW parts in events like this is like an Easter Egg Hunt. If you look real
hard you never know what you will find. Well this year I found a lot of
easter eggs for my older VWs and even my Toyota Tundra. Found 3 brand new
in the box fuel filters, 2 for my A1s and 1 for my A2s. Also found an A1
coolant tank in really good shape as well as other bits and pieces. After
some tag team haggling I walked away with the parts at a very good price.
The next day I was walking by a parts vendor and I saw a bunch of filters
sitting in a pile on a table. I recognized the oil filter as the one I use
on my V8 Tundra. Turns out the engine air and cabin air filters the oil
filter was sitting on fit my Tundra as well.Needless to say picking up all
3 for $15 made my day since that saved me more than a few $$$. Given that
this event tends to focus on more non-foreign vehicles it is easy to
understand why there are not a lot of watercooled VW or Toyota parts. That
tends to work to one's advantage since these parts are an afterthought and
something many vendors just want to get rid of.

Re: [mk2-16v] Ethanol Free Gasoline?

2015-11-09 Thread 'Matthew Yip' via MK2-16v
Hmm - that's the first time anyone has called my Land Rover a classic.  They
usually use other names that can't be repeated in mixed company .
The newer fuel systems use Viton, a rubber derivative that is specifically
designed to ward off the ill effects of alcohol in the fuel.  The old CIS-E
systems really, really didn't like alcohol - I knew a fellow that lost several
engines because alcohol angered the fuel distributor AND the fuel manufacturer
swore the fuel didn't have any alcohol.  The catch was that the company that
built the fuel distributor's comment was "That ONLY happens when there's
alcohol in the fuel - period".

[mk2-16v] Tire Rack + mount and balance tires locally... worth it?

2015-11-09 Thread Chad Rebuck
I just dropped off a car at Tire Kingdom to have a set of four 15" tires
mounted, balanced with the lifetime balance and rotation option included.
Cost is about $110 before tax. I purchased the tires at Tire Rack because
I was looking for a good deal.

Anyone else buy tires at Tire Rack then wonder if it would have been better
to just buy locally? Do places like Tire Kingdom and Tires Plus still
charge less for mounting and balancing when tires are purchased from them?

[mk2-16v] How to open rear hatch?

2015-11-09 Thread Les Noriel
Question for the group.

On my 1985 3 door Golf hatchback, throughout its life, I had worn through
several keys. Eventually I had three different keys. One for the ignition, one
for the side doors, and one for the hatchback/glovebox

In an attempt to go back to one single key for doors, hatch, ignition, and
glovebox, I bought one of the chinese lock reproduction kits. I had heard the
horror stories and avoided these kits for such a long time. Then I saw the
entire kit on ECS Tunings website and thought maybe this is a decent enough kit
to refurbish all of my locks. Despite my better judgement, I bought it since it
wasn't a big investment. The alternative would be to get a locksmith to rekey
everything. what did I have to lose?

The kit arrived and it appeared of good quality. I installed the door handles
and the rear hatch. Here is my dilemma.

Once I had the lock cylinder and latch installed on the rear hatch, the
tolerances were such that it barely touched the release mechanism. If I jiggled
the key, I could get it to engage. But after a couple of attempts, I felt it
slip and now the rear hatch lock is completely free floating. Regardless of the
position of the key, Locked or unlocked, the rear hatch mechanism does nothing
to open the door. The key cylinder spins freely. Pushing in on the latch does
nothing.

So how does one open the rear hatch from the inside of the car? Is it possible
to remove the rear panel on the hatch from the inside and manually open the
rear hatch?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cost for mounting and balancing was about $15 per tire.

I've bought tires for all of my vehicles from Tire Rack for the past five

2015-11-09 Thread Holland Phillips
Les,
If I recall correctly, you can remove the plastic trim from the inside of
the hatch, which will allow you access to the lock mechanism. I think you
need the star type Allen tool to work with the fasteners. I may be wrong
here, since its been a while since I've messed with that portion of the
car. And my car is still in Mexico, since I had to return to the US on such
short notice. Maybe someday I'll win the lottery and be able to retrieve my
beloved GTI.
Sniff...

[mk2-16v] Re: Tire Rack + mount and balance tires locally... worth it?

2015-11-09 Thread charlier180
I just went through this about a month ago with the purchase of tires.
After crunching the numbers I found that buying the tires from a local tire
shop saved me a few dollars over Tirerack + shipping + local mounting,
balancing and tire disposal. It was not that much money but it also
supported a local business. I go through the same ritual each time I buy
tires just out of curiosity and for piece of mind.

2015-11-09 Thread Steven Arguello
I wonder all the time about that. If you have the tires rotated and balanced
once a year it's probably worth it. I only use Tire Rack when I'm picky about
what tires I'm buying, now that's just with my GTi. All other cars, whatever's
cheapest/easiest. I've been to 4 or 5 different places in the past 10 years and
I'd say that they're all pretty much the same.

RE: [mk2-16v] Tire Rack + mount and balance tires locally... worth it?

2015-11-09 Thread Larry Velez
Some places will match Tire Rack’s prices if you bring them the print out – but
not all or they will say they don’t carry that tire. The lifetime balance
sounds good but I keep hearing horror stories from neighbors about Tire Choice.
I have been to Kauffman but was not super impressed. These places seem like
churn and burn and have low margins and it shows, they are pressed to move cars
in and out.

Personally I went to http://www.advanceperformance.com/ here in Tampa which had
some nice cars they were working on (the place is not as impressive as the
website makes it seem) and were very cool but definitely ended up spending more
than I would have at one of the chain places.

I wonder all the time about that. If you have the tires rotated and balanced
once a year it's probably worth it. I only use Tire Rack when I'm picky about
what tires I'm buying, now that's just with my GTi. All other cars, whatever's
cheapest/easiest. I've been to 4 or 5 different places in the past 10 years and
I'd say that they're all pretty much the same.

looking for a good deal.

Anyone else buy tires at Tire Rack then wonder if it would have been better to
just buy locally? Do places like Tire Kingdom and Tires Plus still charge less
for mounting and balancing when tires are purchased from them?

Re: [mk2-16v] Tire Rack + mount and balance tires locally... worth it?

2015-11-09 Thread Holland Phillips
Two words - shop around. I've had it go both ways. I used to have a place I
always used for mounting/balancing and alignment, because they had the
latest top of the line equipment, and were racers. Sometimes they had tires
I wanted for less than The Rack, but usually The Rack had the better price.

Re: [mk2-16v] Ethanol Free Gasoline?

2015-11-09 Thread charlier180
FYI, pure-gas.org also has a smartphone app for android phones. I use that
in combination with the Gas Buddy app to locate sources for fueling. The
gas buddy app REALLY comes in handy when I'm traveling to locate local gas
stations in unfamiliar towns especially since the app gives mileage to the
station.
