Re: [WikimediaMobile] [Wmfall] Accessibility Sprint

2016-11-02 Thread Katherine Maher
This is really cool, thank you all for your work! Someone at WikiCon North
America asked me about our accessibility issues, and I was embarrassed to
not know how to respond - I appreciate the work you're doing to keep us up
to date and in best practice compliance with standards today.

[WikimediaMobile] Wikipedia 5.3.0 beta 4 for iOS

2016-11-02 Thread Joshua Minor
Hello mobile Wikimedians,

The WMF iOS app team just pushed an updated beta to our TestFlight channel.

In this beta, we have altered the criteria for when an "In the news" item
should trigger a notification. In our modeling over the summer we expected
our notability criteria[1] to result in 3-5 notifications a week for
English users. However, since the last beta, no items have met the
criteria. By adding to the criteria we hope this will result in slightly
increased rate of notification (like more than 0) without being overly
push-y.

Also added in this update:
 - Updated presentation of citations across tablets and phones
 - Saved articles update character based on current Chinese language setting
 - Fixed crashes for iPad Air 2 and Explore feed loading
 - Other small bug fixes and improvements

Thanks for all your testing and feedback,
Josh Minor
PM, Wikipedia app for iOS

[1] - Basically, that an item be on the Wikipedia's Main page, and the
linked articles have sufficient recent page views to be considered
'trending' in that language. See https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T143050
for the gory details.

Just a reminder that the Wikipedia accessibility brownbag will be *tomorrow*
at 1:15 PDT. Join us either in person in the Chip Deubner Lounge in SF, or
via YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsE0PpQkBcI

I'll be giving a brief intro on the basics of accessibility for the
visually impaired, and the work the iOS team has been doing this week, and
Volker Eckl, Sr. UX Engineer from the WMF Editing team will talk about
efforts on OOjs UI for the web.

And huge thanks to the volunteers who showed up in Philly this weekend to
hack on the app with Corey, Joe and Austin (
https://twitter.com/wild37/status/792485190924955648). We're working
through your pull requests.

Thanks,
Josh

In case you missed it, here's the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmfqtP3pr2Y&t=47

Today presenters covered Wikipedia offline (including a Progressive Web App
 version) prototypes,
IFTTT automated testing, file
property searches, and Wikidata visualizations you can copy and paste into
articles. More details on the Etherpad
.
