Re: [Mobile.AI] Audio Recording With a Smartphone

2015-11-05 Thread Shashi
hello raaju,

how i wish that your email had been posted a couple of weeks ago!

i have just finished a field assignment that involved capturing
natural and human sounds occuring in the environment. i used iphone
4s, with inbuilt microphone and without any external device. there
were suggestions on using external microphones that seemed rather
expensive even to hire, let alone purchase. now, the task is to
1. isolate individual sounds from the multiple sounds that co-occur
2. enhance the sounds and suppress noise e.g. human talk when the
focus is on sound of waves
3. transfer the audio files to laptop and other equipments for production

raaju, will you please provide detailed answers on what and how to do !

thanks,
shashi

hi,

thanks.

accept your point on outdatedness of simbian... but we are talking
about someone (not me) who is 60 and above in terms of age... has a
functional rather than learning orientation to mobile phone... that is
why simbian that she already is used to, works for her.

android
based on posts, i understand that there are multiple apps that need
to be installed, as against the aple devices (which i use) where all
of it is in-built... not sure if she will be able to or comfortable
with doing al the work for an android

blackberry--
are these devices voice enabled
is voice in-built
is it with qwerty keys
if all of the above is yes, then which of the models is likely to be
the least expensive and easily useable for the person in question?

b. are there any 2nd-hand iphones available that she could consider
buying in good condition... not the latest model of course!

4. anything else that she needs to know or do? any better suggestion?

hi aruni,

thanks. i discovered that the phone did not have to be turned on to
the keypad mode, int he first place. it's about getting the placement

Re: [Mobile.AI] suggestion need bluetooth keyboard for my eye phone 3gs and samsung galaxy star

2014-03-27 Thread Shashi
if the purpose for bluetooth is to key-in numbers names etc., pocket
sized bluetooth keyboard is good. mini bluetooth keyboard is one.
costs Rs. 1000.
if the purpose is to type qwerty serious work, logitech is good.
costs. Rs. 4000.
logitech is seemless. you can connect it to more than one handset at a
time, to my mind. not sure about mini bluetooth.

[Mobile.AI] blue tooth keyboard and iPhone 4s

2014-03-13 Thread Shashi
hello,

iPhone 4s allows connecting only 1 bluetooth device at a time. i have
2 bluetooth keyboards. even as the handset is asked to 'forget' the
device i.e. keyboard2, keyboard-1 is not being identified for
connection.
1. how do i fix this issue?
2. keyboard2 requires some series of numbers to be entered for it to
get connected. this is visual in nature. so what and how can i
have the option of accessing either as and when needed?

hello all,

1. what finger stroke/s can i use instead of pressing the home button
for going back to start?
2. what finger stroke/s can i use instead of the screne-lock button--
at the top-edge of the handset, to lock unlock the device? i do not
want to set auto-lock.
3. dictation within notes requires flicking through letters. some of
these get typed accidently. is there a shortcut for activating
dictation without having to flick through? once you get to dictation,
there is the tap with single and double finger stroke, of course.

2014-03-03 Thread Shashi
thank you both for the speedy response.
chances are that location tracking is the culprit. location tracking
is on, on the handset. but, tripple tapping does not seem to work.
where is its control primarily located? control centre ... checked
something does not seem to recognise tapping.

dictation, it worked until yesterday. internet is on. will check the
microphone did not do anything to the settings though

Re: [Mobile.AI] Overview of Accessibility Features in iOS 7

2013-09-22 Thread Shashi
dear atul,

thank you for the url. it is good.
i want the IPhone to be my mobile office. this can mean layers of
tasks that can or cannot be performed as on date. but yes, i intend to
use the relevant apps; am not enthusiastic about music on a handset;
paying by creditcard is ok.
guess, as things stand now--
1. ios-7 makes it possible to finger-type letters. this throws up a
list of apps. good start.
2. there's no escaping the need to learn moving around a touch screen.
and as harish wrote some time back, this is reality and best accepted.
3. siri does a bit of typing, searching and dialing of contacts,
sending email etc. can be useful. prompt-me can be set. good for
someone like me who forgets when there's much to remember. for now,
accent is an issue.
4. gps works fine with google maps coming back to the iphone. around
me works as well. this is my big need.
all in all, sounds good. think, i will clear memory space for other
things. iphone is on.
rgds.

Re: [Mobile.AI] Overview of Accessibility Features in iOS 7

2013-09-19 Thread Shashi
Hello All,

Like the review of IOS-7.
Cutting the long story short--
Is it safe to buy an IPhone 5/5S for someone, who is getting on to
touchpad for the first time...
Atul and Sagar have already recommended and i do not have reason to
hesitate still but... the worry is whether Siri works fine. when i
checked it out at I-store, it did not quite grasp commands which the
salesperson and i tried to give.
1. siri has a set of commands to perform tasks. she said that
additional commands for siri could not be done on the handset. is this
true?
2. siri is important a feature that i am looking to work for me. it
makes possible doing serious work in that case. for instance, i would
like to create actual powerpoint slides and complete presentations
using siri. siri commands take me to the icon or open a slide but when
i asked siri to insert text in the fields, not sure if it did
understand. similarly, it took me to the excelsheet but when i gave a
command to go to cell-A7, it did not work. my expectation of siri is
that it should actually input data within cells and if it does insert
a formula as per command, it would truly be iceing on the cake.
possible? can it be made possible with some round about manner?
3. can siri be trained as in so many of the speech-to-text softwares /
applications like dragon dictate?
will truly apreciate if you will answer these concerns.
rgds.

2013-08-28 Thread Shashi
hello rajneesh,
thank you, for the response.
i have tried to work with 'manage gestures'. for some reason, the
change of gestures would not be approved. why could this have
happened?
1. there are a limited number of items in 'manage gestures'. is it
possible for me to add items here? how, please?
2. is it possible to go to a particular item e.g. a name in the
contact-list, and add a gesture to call-number / sms-number etc.?

again, activating explore with touch seemed to reduce speed
significantly. is this to be expected? can this be managed?

this is very ambitious, perhaps, but if it works, it helps.

[Mobile.AI] sam gal chat help pls

2013-08-27 Thread Shashi
hi,
1. sam gal chat. want to assign/change gestures for performing
specific options. tried. not working. why? how do i set it right?
2. explore with touch: when turned on, reduces speed. should it be turned on?
3. i could flip pages and menu items by using the fingers. now this is
not working... why... what should i do to make it work? swiping on all
parts of the screen means memorising what is where i am not good
at this
4. can i assign gestures for each item-- bottom-up swipe for open menu
list; swipe up right for something; and so on?
5. where, which menu etc in, do i find the microphone ?
rgds.

[Mobile.AI] samsung gal chat

2013-08-24 Thread Shashi
hi all,

Dr. Abdul's post encourages me to put further questions vis the Chat-device--
i have just bought the device. i know nothing of how to use the touch-pad.
there is need for help-- starting with what gestures mean/do what.
i am not comfortable remembering where to tap on the screen so that
the message is sent or read and so on flipping the screen like
pages- back and forth- to move across items is something i find more
like it. is it possible to have a set of gestures that are of the
kind?
the most important functionality for me is the navigater-- to be able
to know which way to go, when i am on a move in a not-so-frequent
location
of course this does not mean that i would not like to use the other
apps and functionalities
so, may i request that you give me short and very simple tutorials
please to do
this, for this go there and then do that
rgds.

[Mobile.AI] Hello, new to the group.

2013-08-19 Thread Shashi
Hello All!

This is Shashi.
In line with the group-tradition, starting the conversation with a
brief about myself--
Brought-up and located in Mumbai (Bombay), I am Assistant Professor
(English) at NM College of Commerce & Economics, and otherwise
registered for PhD with Mumbai University.
Interests-- as will be evident from the above, there's very little
time left for anything much. I make the most of this little time by
usually taking a good nap!!! otherwise, enjoy hindustani classical
(although not trained).
Technology-- it's what brings me to the group. although, there is no
denying that i do like what technology is capable of doing and has
done for us: the blind community, i am both poor and lazy at
experimenting with what happens when one clicks on some button...
this email is a warm-up for things to come-- you can expect me to post
questions/doubts on some of the most basic things vis-a-vis
mobile-phones.
Cheers.
