[MMouse]: i love you, kyle maclachlan

2000-06-17 Thread s. w.

a.) yeah, yeah, all this talk about more than music fest -- the
wilkes-barre fest (http://www.ignostic.com/fest) is only going to be a
bazillion times better (band-wise, at least)! just b/c your precious bright
eyes won't be tagging along w. the faint doesn't mean that you shouldn't go.

let me tell you about a band that will be playing this fest:

an albatross and the 1.) bird 2.) sex 3.) cake collective.

they murder.

i want to say more, i want to gush, but, i can't even come up w. words kind
enough to describe these wonderful people and their band. all i can do is
tell you to check them out. i believe they will be playing in the cleveland
area on saturday. if you can, go go go.

b.) jack dean godsey from tennessee, usa, are you still subscribed to this
list? er, "jackiebluejackie0"? please mail me, if you are.

c.) i have been gone for a week and have not really read through my
appallingly large backlog of messages from this list, so, i don't know if
this has already been discussed or not and i don't care:

why is the cover of the new modest mouse cd so damned ugly? i mean, it is
really really awful-looking, in my opinion. i've always really enjoyed
their album art, in the past, but, this is so bad that i've flipped the
booklet over so the cover is not staring back at me when i look at the cd.
bleeehhh. what happened?

d.) philip smoker is rock. he opens car doors for ladies. we should all
bake pies and send them to him.

1-2-3-4, who's punk, what's the score?

  1. I just got done recording for a tribute to the Mountain Goats EP
titled "Going to Ames" that will be released at some point on Troubleman

Unlimited Records. It will contain 3 packag-ized versions of 3 of my
favorite Mountain Goats songs. For those of you not familiar with the
Mountain Goats, they are a band that usually consists of one guy from
Iowa, who writes badass songs and plays them on his acoustic guitar. I
  will keep you posted.

hey:

is anyone going to the more than music fest in columbus, ohio this summer?
it's gonna be a killer -- orchid, the faint (who are my boyzz), the
rapture, song of zarathustra, sphie nun squad? not to mention the
fact that, most likely, kansas will be there to enact a repeat of michigan
fest, in which they (we) severely whupped florida's ass in the contest of
representin'.

hey, if you live near the east coast, be sure to go see the black cat #13 if
they play in your town. they are radical.

oh, and the new modest mouse cd.. i really dig it! it rocks me! um.. at
least, that's what i keep trying to tell myself. but really, i'm more into
that popular song about thongs than i am into this album.

okay, all of the above was really just an attempt to make this e-mail seem
like it was about lots of different topics, some modest mouse-related, even.
but really, there is only one reason why i bothered to write an e-mail to
this list tonight, which is to say this:

when you sign up for a mailing list, you must realize that many, many people
are allowing you and your words into their inboxes..

this is something you should think about before sending ridiculous, childish
post after ridiculous, childish post to a list w. 300+ (? i'm assuming.. )
subscribers.

please.

(and, as this is not really a long post, NOR is it that annoying, and NOR am
i sending more than one, please do not hurl multiple "e-mail me in

shows, other art exhibits, specific awesome things that i can't leave w/o
visiting, etc. any information that you might have would be greatly
appreciated, as i'm doing this w/o much planning.. also, are there any
local websites that could keep me up to date on shows happening in the area?
i most likely will be planning the time of my trip around shows that i want
to see, as the warhol museum isn't going anywhere.thanks in advance.

i could do this w. stumps,

I'd just like to say FUCK YOU to all the people who
are mocking the Mendoza lyrics as I thought they were
charming and sweet. Sometimes the simplest lyrics can
sound so profound given the right voice and backing
instrumentation. I'd love to rip open the CD
collections of those who call such lyrics "insipid" to
discover the intellectually stimulating treats that
are to be found within. Shit, I should start quoting
the simpler lyrics of any number of bands that I
constantly see worshipped on this mailing list, shall
I start with Polyvinyl, Jade Tree, or elsewhere?

[MMouse]: the wind-up bird chronicles

2000-05-02 Thread s. w.

and, while i'm talking, let me just tell you what i like:

i really like the kittycraft cd "breaks and beats from the flower patch" --
this is music for the summer. this is music for open windows. you might or
might not like this.

i only last week discovered the glory that is pinback.. if anyone does not
own the pinback cd, run run run to your local record store and say to the
boy w. the thick black glasses, striped sweater, tight high water pants, and
cons, "i need the pinback cd!" and he will help you.
a silver mt. zion? i don't know what this is.. related to
godspeedyoublackemperor, maybe? probably members of? i know nothing, but i
know that this is beautiful and amazing and just so.. ! orchestral
prettiness that seems so perfect thunderstorms? but maybe i just say that
b/c that's all i've been seeing lately..

the new camera obscura is really good, but i'd recommend seeing them live on
the tour they're currently doing before buying the record.. they are my
bloody valentine if my bloody valentine were from the san diego hardcore
scene? maybe.

oh, and that band bright eyes that no one listened to three months ago?
they're perdy good. their new album "fevers and mirrors" is the worst thing
that's ever happened to me. it's beautiful, subtle (not really), and it
sounds nothing at all like commander venus -- whoever said that heard "the
calendar hung itself" once and made a hasty statement. the studioness is a
little much, but, whatever. get this.

and

ORCHID!

now that i have opened my cd player to all of you and given some of the best
recommendations that i can give, i need your help! i need info. who here
knows about the blood brothers? red scare? killsadie? tell me everything
you know and i will be forever grateful..

[MMouse]: mi fest new mm cd

2000-03-29 Thread s. w.

i admit it: i, too, bought a copy of the evil evil new album at michigan
fest. at the time, i thought nothing about what i was doing, just "oh wow,
this is so rad! why, amongst all of this punk rock stuff, are these kids
selling modest mouse cds? must buy!" -- whatever, it's done, i did it, i
like it, i don't regret it. i must say, though, that i have not immediately
fallen in love w. it like i have on all of their other records. the sound
is different, something i can't put my finger on -- no musical selling out
here, though, in my opinion -- just different.

to mr. andrew hager: sorry i wasn't able to pick you out of the swarms of
kids to say hello -- i had a hard enough time finding the kids i came w.!
but, a coincidence: i think that i signed the tree of knowledge mailing
list (which i am already on, ope) right under your name. i thought to
myself, that name looks familiar, must be some internet kid! anyway, did
you enjoy the fest? did anyone else on this list go? were the locust not
the most spectacular spectacle ever? did karate not totally suck a bag of
dicks? did you buy anything cool (besides the bad bad cd)? did anyone see
the kansas kids (sadly, we were pretty much w/o costumes this time)
representing and totally kicking the florida kids' asses, in a fairly
non-literal sense? i am curious!

2000-03-29 Thread s. w.

one more thing on michigan fest:

my new friend atom (of atom and his package) played there and i convinced
him to play a mt. goats song, which he kindly did. he played the seed song
and ohhh was it ever grand. i remember that someone on this list was
talking about the show where he played all mt. goats covers -- he said that
he would send me a tape of it (which i would gladly share) if his plans to
release an e.p. of those songs (one of these songs is GOING TO GEORGIA which
is quite possibly the best mt. goats song of all time) fall through. but
they probably won't, so be looking for that.

[MMouse]: 1999: ROCKTCHA!

1999-12-12 Thread s. w.

best live shows in 1999? right.

(i would list the venue/date, but i don't remember a single date and for
half of these the venue would be something silly like "vince's house".)

the faint: sexy nice boys from omaha who sing songs about sex and not much
else. their live show is absolute rock and roll.

atom his package: people like to make fun of him, but he really does
write good songs. when i saw him, kids in the audience wore giant bear
heads and danced like idiots. yes!

the mountain goats: was that even this year? i don't remember. but this
would be up there on a best shows of all time list. over two hours of john
darnielle, w. a found photos exhibit preceding. he stretched the quite
possibly infamous "the sign" into a 20-minute diatribe on hipsters, kinda.
incredible incredible.

june of '44: more than i could have hoped for. nothing's changed, they've
still got the rock.

bauhaus: was that last year? i don't know. but who would have thought
that i'd ever get to see them?

superchunk: again, nothing's changed, they've still got the rock.

bright eyes: this show was in omaha, and wow do those kids respect their
local friends. the crowd was utterly silent for the whole set, which was
all songs that aren't on any album or 7". conor puts me to shame.

trizteza: a mogwai, macha-type band, but their roots are pure punk rawk. a
pretty, quiet show, w. one light and shadows on the ceiling.

south by southwest: tom waits, the kiss-offs, macha, built to spill, $.50
pizza sold on the street, meeting lots of scary music biz execs, sleeping in
a truck for a week b/c every motel within 200 miles was full and SPOON!

dub narcotic sound system/miranda july: actually, this show looked like it
was a dismal failure for all bands involved, but dancing w. calvin johnson =
oh yeah.

also: rushmore and american beauty are the two best movies of the year,
though i'm still waiting on cradle will rock and the new woody allen.

rocktcha!
