Uploading is not censored on PAUSE, indexing is. Rocco was the first
to occupy CDDB namespace and without human intervention, he remains
owner.

At some point I'd like to start censoring uploads as well, because it
helps to spot error conditions earlier in the game.

This can easily happen (but doesn't happen very often). On PAUSE, the
uploaded files share a common incoming directory and people can point
to the wrong one and. No serious problem.

Registration Request

2000-05-17 Thread B . Ingerson

Hi,

My name is Brian Ingerson. I am a programmer for 'epixtech inc', a leading
library automation software vendor. I write all of my code in Perl and have
done so for the past two years. I am also an active and contributing member
of the Seattle Perl Users Group (SPUG http://www.halcyon.com/spug/) where I
recently (last night) gave a talk about XS and the Perl internal C API. My
most recent Perl work has involved writing wrapper modules to existing
API-s within our company and invoking them behind an XML/RPC mod_perl
server. This work has taught me the requisite knowledge for creating Perl
modules suitable for uploading to CPAN. (Using h2xs, XS, MakeMaker, etc)

I would like to get registered to contribute to CPAN.

I see two problems. One, that someone was allowed to upload CDDB other
than Rocco (that seems to me to be a bug, but I could be wrong). The other
is that somehow FONKIE and KRAEHE have the exact same distribution.
Perhaps KRAEHE mistakenly claimed it as his own after FONKIE already
uploaded it?

I am not sure where the bug is, maybe PAUSE, maybe search.cpan.org, maybe both,
but

find . -name CDDB\*gz -ls
 10493 May 14 10:50 ./F/FO/FONKIE/CDDB-0.9.tar.gz
 10493 May 15 11:44 ./K/KR/KRAEHE/CDDB-0.9.tar.gz
 11706 Nov 7 1998 ./R/RC/RCAPUTO/CDDB-0.06-beta.tar.gz
 12471 Jan 10 1999 ./R/RC/RCAPUTO/CDDB-0.07.tar.gz
 12916 Jul 16 1999 ./R/RC/RCAPUTO/CDDB-1.00.tar.gz
 13227 Jul 16 1999 ./R/RC/RCAPUTO/CDDB-1.01.tar.gz
 13422 Aug 13 1999 ./R/RC/RCAPUTO/CDDB-1.02.tar.gz
 13829 Apr 29 22:00 ./R/RC/RCAPUTO/CDDB-1.03.tar.gz

0.9 does not exist in R/RC/RCAPUTO, but newer versions do.

But IIRC search.cpan.org uses that latest uploaded as you cannot always
determine a version number from the dist name. Although it is getting
better.

Graham.

Re: module CDDB-0.9.tar.gz

2000-05-17 Thread Graham Barr

This happened because both you and Michael Koehne (userid: KRAEHE )
have uploaded a distribution called CDDB-0.9. And Michael's
was uploaded after yours.

However looking in the files in K/KR/KRAEHE they look like
copies of yours.

Andreas, any ideas how this happened ?

Graham.

Yes. You uploaded a module that already existed. I do not know why CDDB
is listed under Michael Koehne, though. Rocco Caputo is the author of CDDB:

http://www.perl.com/CPAN-local/authors/id/R/RC/RCAPUTO/

>how to find a good place in the namespace tree?

Well, look on CPAN or at search.cpan.org to see if it already exists.

Although this seems like it may be a PAUSE bug; I thought that no one could
upload "DistName-\d+.\d+.tar.gz" if DistName already belonged to another
author.

A tip of the hat to you, o brave and unusual netizen, for actually
taking the time to _remove_ outdated information. I don't see that

CGI::Session was an idea from 1995 that I never implemented and no longer
intend to tackle. I get mail asking about it every few months -- I think
it should be removed from the list so someone else can do it.

CGI::Response is something I wrote. The responsible party is listed as
CGIP, which was a mailing list I created in 1994 or 1995 with Tim Bunce to
talk about such things. CGIP is no longer in existence -- Lincoln Stein's
CGI.pm effectively took its place. As such, I would be happy to have
CGI::Reponse listed as author "MGH" so people can send me requests about
it.
