If not you could get one of the other CPAN admins to try, or (as a last

The Mojolicious pre-reqs (copied from its Makefile) are minimal:

Hi,

It looks like Carl Franks (PAUSE id CFRANKS, aka Fireartist) has become
uncontactable - I've had a couple of reports of people attempting to
contact him re HTML::FormFu related modules, and I have also tried
recently without response.

I was hoping to add Dean Hamstead (PAUSE id DJZORT) as a Co-Maint for
all the FormFu modules (basically everything I am co-maint for and
CFRANKS is owner. This is obviously impossible without assistance from
Carl. Dean and myself are maintaining the FormFu modules within the
github FormFu org (Carl previously transferred the github repos to this
org) - https://github.com/FormFu/
Having both of us able to release would make life less complicated.

I would like your advice as to the best way to proceed - I would prefer
that any ownership transition was managed with Carl's permission, but
since he currently appears to not be in circulation this is impossible.
Maybe for now adding an additional co-maint and if, in the future, Carl

is still offline then we should transfer ownership?

Regards

Nigel.

email within a day or two unless it gets buried in a spam box]

So, is it OK if I upload a placeholder such as Kollos::Placeholder?

My thought on this:

I think this is ok as long it doesn’t end up sitting there for
years, unused, and blocking others.

I think if a placeholder is there for more than a year, then if
someone else wants the name, we’d have to release it.

I’d upload a module called Kollos — if you upload Kollos::Placeholder,
someone could still come along and release Kollos.
Of course, this way you’ll get first-come on Kollos, so will have to
transfer that to Jeffrey when he’s ready to release.

Fwd: PAUSE indexer report INDERPAL/OxdPerlModule-0.01.tar.gz

2017-01-03 Thread Ron Savage

Hi Inderpal

The name of your module is a bad choice. All Perl modules are ... Perl
modules! There is no need to put the words 'Perl' or 'Module' in the
name of a Perl module. I.e. don't ever do that - PLEASE!

Your chosen name tells us nothing about it's purpose nor the context in
which it might be used. And when it's indexed by CPAN, how can we
possibly search for it? I.e. How can we know what to search for, since
we can't even guess such an odd name. And we can't search for generic
words such as Perl or module, can we :-)?

For help with naming modules, see:

https://pause.perl.org/pause/query?ACTION=pause_namingmodules

And from the source I see you're referring to a whole set of other modules:

package OxdPerlModule;

use 5.006;
use strict;
use warnings FATAL => 'all';
use OxdPackages::OxdConfig;
use OxdPackages::OxdRegister;
use OxdPackages::UpdateRegistration;
use OxdPackages::GetAuthorizationUrl;
use OxdPackages::GetTokenByCode;
use OxdPackages::GetUserInfo;
use OxdPackages::OxdLogout;
use OxdPackages::UmaRsProtect;
use OxdPackages::UmaRpAuthorizeRpt;
use OxdPackages::UmaRpGetGat;
use OxdPackages::UmaRpGetRpt;
use OxdPackages::UmaRsCheckAccess;

They are not on CPAN, are they, so what on Earth is going on? People who
use CPAN have an expectation that /all/ modules you upload will only use
modules available from CPAN (or ship with Perl itself).

IOW (In Other Words) modules you /don't/ upload can use your own module
of course, but when someone downloads your module from CPAN - say for
automated testing - they expect it to depend exclusively on modules
shipped with Perl or available on CPAN.

And even this text in your module is utterly uninformative :-((:

=head1 NAME

OxdPerlModule - The great new OxdPerlModule!

Here's a list of my modules:

https://metacpan.org/author/RSAVAGE

Look carefully at how the names are structured, so they form
hierarchies, and so people can guess while searching on CPAN even if
they don't know the exact name.

Good luck for next time

See https://metacpan.org/release/App-perlbrew.

You could, say, install Perl V 5.18.4 or 5.14.4 and test under them, to

I'd say yes, if you don't have a long history of dealing with Perl
module. But ... here are my notes on pre-req modules available:

o Pre-req (prereq) checkers:
- Module::Used, App::pmcheck, pmcheck
- Perl::PrereqScanner
- Module::Depends::Intrusive
- CPAN::FindDependencies
- App::mymeta_requires scans MYMETA.*
- Dist::Requires
- Devel::TraceUse tells which modules use which modules

ATM I use a home-grown couple of scripts which combine to use
Perl::PrereqScanner.

Ok, sounds reasonable, although I'm hoping you can clear up a few things
I don't quite grasp...

I used module-starter to get a template, so I initially had an xt dir,
which was new to me. Is there a common wisdom as to how conveniently run
them? I.e. in the spirit of 'make test' I figured 'make xtest' would
make sense, but no go. I can't find anything else premade in the
makefile to achieve this so I'm either not looking hard enough
or...something else :-). I understand there are ways to add my own
targets in Makefile.PL so I'm assuming that is the approach I should
take but just checking so I'm not missing something obvious...maybe
there is a common wisdom for running 'xt' tests very simply?

There used to be a simple way to do this, when many of us used
Module::Build, and hence shipped Build.PL:

perl Build.PL; ./Build; ./Build authortest

As it happens, I also shipped Makefile.PL.

But now that Module::Build is deprecated, and kicked out of core, I've
had feedback asking me not to skip both Makefile.PL and Build.PL, so I
zapped the latter.

The authortest incantation does not work with Makefile.PL. But there is
an easy way, from the module's dir:

prove -lv tx/author

And normally, instead of running perl Makefile.PL; make; make test, I
just use prove -lv t (same as prove -lvt), to test t/*.t.

Also, note that in some of the regular tests I do make use of
conditional around $ENV{RELEASE_TESTING} - I utilize SQLite to verify

Yes, I saw that.

that my query language works and gives the same results as a comparable
SQL query. That however, is not necessary for an end user, and it adds a
dependency on DBI/DBD::SQLite which isn't really needed for the module
per se so I make sure to work around that. Technically I guess such
tests could go into xt, but since I already have the entire test
infrastructure running there it makes sense to keep the code where it is
- it should be invisible in end user tests. I assume this is alright &
in the spirit of things?

Ahh, but it won't be invisible to pre-req scanners. So I suggest moving
it to xt/author.

If you have modules used just for testing, they can go in t/lib, but
make sure you tell Makefile.PL not to index them. I can't immediately
give you the syntax for that..

 > o Change search.cpan.org to metacpan.org.

Admittedly, I haven't researched this...can you elaborate on why (or
point to a good resource)? Not at all opposed, it's just that I've
always used just CPAN so I'm not clear on what MetaCPAN brings to the
table.

MetaCPAN.org is much newer code, and has many features, including a API,
so it has quite a few benefits.

Thank you, I'll take a stab at the stuff above first and then proceed.

Sounds good.

RFC on a new module 'Grep::Query'

2016-07-30 Thread Ron Savage

Hi Ken

At first, I was surprised by this proposal, since I often use App::Ack
(https://metacpan.org/release/ack), but the examples in the docs make a
good case for having this module too available to us.

Some Suggestions:

o Move the pod tests into xt/author, and make any modules used to test
pod optional, so end users can install the module even if there are
failing pod tests. Ah, I see running the tests that it requires
AUTHOR_TESTING. Excellent, but could be a little bit better.

o Change search.cpan.org to metacpan.org.

Other than that, got for it!

My first module

2015-07-14 Thread Ron Savage

Hi Rolf

Thank you for you detailed message:
http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.modules/2015/07/msg93645.html
which I won't copy here. I'll just address some of your points.

To discuss the naming of module, consider:
http://prepan.org/

On that subject, it's common to prefix scraper modules with
WWW::Scraper::*. Search MetaCPAN and you'll see many of them, 2 of them
being mine.

Now, more on your questions:

1) One or two modules?

::Scraper::Digitalarkivet with sub-modules starting with
WWW::Scraper::Digitalarkivet::Database would be my recommendation.

2) Should it be a module at all?

Of course!

Users might wish to sub-class your main module and use your database
module. And they could subclass the latter, too.

I strongly recommend you base each module on Moo and Types::Standard,
despite the fact you are at risk of getting far too many conflicting
suggestions on this topic.

You could also release App::Digitalarkivet containing your
now-much-simplified script, if you wish. But why, when the main module
can ship with a bin/a.script.pl?

3) Namespace

See above.

Remember: You need to consider this topic from the point of view of
someone searching CPAN for code relevant to their needs. Any name which
is cryptic, as in the DA you mention, is meaningless to every single
person except yourself. So, please don't use it.

3) Best practice for POD?

You mean (4), right :-)?

I put all my POD at the end. And in scripts/ I often ship a pod2html.sh,
plus scripts to create all table, drop all tables, populate constant
tables. You get the idea. See any db-using module, such as
https://metacpan.org/release/App-Office-Contacts. Download it and check
the scripts/ dir for ideas.

Note: In the past, I used to use the very sophisticated DBIx::Class, but
have decided that for my work it's too complex, so now I use
DBIx::Simple. You should too. Whatever you do, don't reinvent the wheel,
and that applies to both your db-interface and your web-scraping code.
And /that's/ why I'm recommending you release your code as a set of modules.

4) To CPAN or not to - Licence

The 'Creative Commons' people don't recommend their works for software,
as I understand it. I always use the Artistic Licence (aka License for
you non-Australians).

Lastly, please also put the code on github. I'm here:
https://github.com/ronsavage?tab=repositories

That way, others can fork you code and push patches, which you can then
adopt or reject.

You'll still release the code to CPAN, of course. Github is for interacting.

Good luck!

It would make more sense to call the module

Hi Steffen

I see Date::Calc needs some TLC. I've never done XS programming, but I
can fix a few other outstanding issues, if you give me co-maint.

This has become urgent since tests started failing on Jan 1st.

Or, if you can't log on to PAUSE, just reply (all) and I'll do it myself.

I've also seen a lot of other emails relating to errors in the test
suite of Date::Calc since 01/01/2015 and fixes regarding the definition
of "true" and "false" values in ToolBox.h.

However, unfortunately my wife is ill at the moment and I don't have the
time to fix these problems.
On top of that I cannot currently send emails from my other email
account s...@engelschall.com <mailto:s...@engelschall.com>, I get an error

It would be great if someone (Andreas?) could make my email address
st...@cpan.org <mailto:st...@cpan.org> point to ost...@gmail.com

Thank you very much for your comprehension and efforts!!

Requesting permission to work on HTML::FormatNroff

them some time to respond, perhaps a month or more. Did you try that?

--
Ron Savage - savage.net.au

doubt from a starter

2014-12-31 Thread Ron Savage

Hi

I assume you're asking about copyright issues.

If the web pages which will be scraped have no copyright statement, then
there is no issue.

Some web sites use (c) or (C) as a attempt at a fake copyright symbol,
but (warning: IANAL) under Australian law that is not a copyright
symbol, because the parentheses do not form a circle around the letter.
© is a copyright symbol (if you email client displays it the same way I
see it).

If there is a copyright symbol, then western law still allows copying
for various purposes (e.g. research, quoting, etc).

But these are all issues for people who use your code. Just because you
are the author of the code does not mean you are responsible if other
people misuse the code. This is the same issue as with photocopiers -
the manufacturers of such equipment are not responsible for what people
choose to copy, are they?

And of course there are already many modules on CPAN which perform web
scraping. You can type WWW::Scraper into MetaCPAN.org and see many
listed there, so obviously a lot of authors publish code without being
too worried about how is is being used. Yes, they might be worried, but
they are not too worried.

Do you actually wish to become the primary maintainer of UUID? As

Of course at any time you can reassign it to ADOPTME if you wish to

As for password (strength) testing, someone may use it for nefarious
