Only the components of it that require external (.so) libraries. We
still use its formatting library and a bunch of data structure
classes, and perhaps some others. You should be able to get away with
a partial installation (for instance, on my Debian box, I need only
libboost-dev, not any libboost-thing-dev).
it's back, and for some silly reasons? zlib?
External zlib has always been required; I think the installation
instructions don't do as good a job of advertising this as they
should, but it doesn't seem to be a problem for people.
