[MOPO] A Death
John Box, 85; Four-Time Oscar Winner Created Lavish SettingsBy Myrna Oliver Times Staff Writer March 23, 2005 John Box, four-time Academy Award-winning art director and production designer who re-created wintry Russia in midsummer Spain for "Doctor Zhivago and built lavish dreamscapes for other period productions, has died. He was 85. Box died March 7 in Leatherhead, Surrey, England, of natural causes associated with aging. The Briton collected an impressive four Oscars for epic films released from 1962 through 1971: "Lawrence of Arabia," "Doctor Zhivago," "Oliver!" and Nicholas and Alexandra." He was also nominated for Academy Awards for his work on the 1972 film "Travels With My Aunt" and the 1984 "Passage to India. Box earned Britain's equivalent of the Oscar, the British Film Academy Award (for best art direction for re-creating 16th century England for the 1966 A Man for All Seasons," imagining early 20th century America for "The Great Gatsby" in 1974 and conjuring the game as well as the arena for the futuristic 1975 "Rollerball." He also received the British Film Academy Award for special contribution to filmmaking in 1991 and a Film Critics' Circle Award for lifetime achievement in 1999. Among his more recent films were "Black Beauty" in 1994 and "First Knight" in 1995, starring Sean Connery as King Arthur and Richard Gere as Lancelot, for which he built a Camelot from scratch in a Welsh reservoir. "If I do my job well, nobody should notice there's been a production designer on the film," Box told the Los Angeles Times in 1995 when "First Knight" was released. "We have a saying: 'No picture postcards, please.' Never be self-conscious. Never show off. Don't show people how clever you are." The London-born Box grew up in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka, where his father worked as an engineer. He later studied architecture at the University of London and served in the British Army during World War II, commanding a tank regiment in France. After the war, he completed his architectural degree and went to work as a draftsman for London Films at Denham Studios. Box, who liked to describe himself as "of the David Lean school," opted for film over architecture for two reasons: In cash-strapped post-war England, few buildings were getting built, and he became inspired by seeing Lean's 1946 black-and-white "Great Expectations." By the mid-1950s, Box had moved up to art director, credited on the 1953 The Million Pound Note," starring Gregory Peck, and the 1956 film "Zarak," starring Victor Mature. Box hit his stride toward the end of the decade with "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" for director Mark Robson, for which he re-created a walled Chinese city in Wales; "Our Man in Havana" for Carol Reed, putting the glamour back into a Cuba nearing Fidel Castro's revolution; and "The World of Suzie Wong," adapting teeming Hong Kong streets for the camera of director Richard Quine. The art director first got the chance to work for Lean on the famed director s "Lawrence of Arabia" in 1962 and teamed up with him again three years later on "Doctor Zhivago." They also worked together on "A Passage to India" in 1984. Box first earned the nickname "the magician" when he produced a snowy Russia in the scorching location in Spain that Lean chose for "Zhivago." But the production designer had already proved his creativity to Lean on Lawrence" in the middle of a barren desert. To enhance the scene of Omar Sharif emerging from a mirage toward Peter O Toole as Lawrence, Box had the sand painted black. Then he remembered a lesson from architectural school about the importance of lines. "I suddenly had an idea," he told The Times in 1995. "I painted a white line toward the mirage . The cameraman went over and kicked at it, dismissing it as art department b.s." But the line worked. "After shooting, O'Toole came up to me and hugged me," Box said. "He said it was extraordinary. He focused on it, and that one small detail made his concentration on the mirage that much more intense." He said Lean came up to him and said, "I don't know how long you're going to live, but you'll never do a better job of designing in your life." Once divorced and once widowed, Box is survived by two daughters, Susan and Deborah. Colours fade alright, I've been on the recieving end of a faded poster, not pretty. But if these red posters have faded, hasn't everything else on the poster faded as well? My faded poster (only worth $10 or so), is nothing like it's non faded friend. A shadow of its former self, if you like. I think Todd's right on this. As a collector of political campaign buttons, I have experience with red fading very easily. I'm very careful about exposing red & orange to any light. Also, I sold a Vertigo poster a couple of years ago to a dealer. I was very proud of the fact that it was deep red/orange. It was in great shape. I got $2300 for it. Danny, There wasn't a problem with the red-orange printing of the posters. The problem was with the exposure of the posters to the sun and light afterwards. Red and orange are about the first colors to fade when exposed to light and do fade pretty easily. The reason you're seeing such an inconsistency with the color of Vertigo posters and lobby cards is because the lighter ones are are faded. Re: [MOPO] Vertigo Posters
We've had several VERTIGO lobby cards over the years including one complete set that was known to be a full set and one not made up over the years from various sets. No fading, but there was a definite inconsistency of the orange/red. Now while Jean-Claude Van Damme may have little to do with VERTIGO, years ago I was doing the marketing for KICKBOXER in Australia. I decided to use the key art differently to the US version and worked up a slightly different lay-out with the graphic artist who did all my work for this particular distributor. When it came to printing the posters, both artist and myself were present at the print run start-up so we could check and approve the proofs on the spot and get the job underway due to a pressing deadline. We decided after a test run (about 50 posters spat out) that we were not happy with the red in the title treatment and wanted to deepen it more, which we did by adding a very small percentage of black. The printers explained and showed us examples of how even minor changes to colours where it was not a standard ink batch could vary throughout a print run. Similarly, a large print run that require ink top ups regularly could vary if there was a slight change to the mix. Similarly, as ink started to thin and required top up, then those at the end of a run could be lighter on some colours. The art of poster printing is not a science with exactitude that applies to colour batching. Movie posters were and are a relatively cheap form of paper advertising. They did not (and probably still don't, though technology has made control easier) have the same sort of exacting standards applied to them as fine art prints. Re: [MOPO] Amelie help, please
Hi all, this is ed.. Sue drug me over to her computer to answer this :-) First, thank you JR for your kind comments... This gives me an opportunity to explain a few points that collectors that use our LAMP DataBase are over looking. When you look for a title in our database... it is best to use a key word or 2 and not the entire title. We try to use the official title, so sometimes it doesn't completely match popular title, especially when there is a hyphen, etc. Next, when we started with the database, we told everyone to look for the little golden poster to see if there are images online... NOW. we tell everyone... click on the title whether it has the 'little golden poster' or NOT and here's why. Most collectors that look up a title DO NOT look at the Release History.and Amelie is a PRIME example. If the poster has an aka OR a different country of release.. it will be marked in the Release History. The original release has our '1st' mark on it. Be sure to look if there's a 'little golden poster' beside any of the akas If the case of Amelie.. there are 2 aka's listed and BOTH have images. Here's the link to the original release For Amelie... we have the Italian, the Japanese, 3 French and the UK. ... we do NOT have the US version yet... as we load, we will continue to add more images. and Finally. We have just added a new generic section our Dealers have just started loading this section, so it will take a little time before you start seeing a massive amount of items listed This section is to let collectors know about items that our dealers have that we DON'T have images online yet. The mark to look for is our 'green dollar mark'. If you see this in the section below the thumbnails... look to see what it is... The first category is theater issued and beside the 'green dollar mark' will say the item that the dealer has. like 'original one sheet' etc..Then you can contact the dealer directly to find out more information. The new generic section WILL NOT give a 'little golden poster' in the primary search... so you have to open the record to find out. For size comparisons or any other reference information, each record has lots of cross-links that are cross-referenced to the LAMP reference sections. For example, if they don't know the size of a French poster, click on the abbreviation below the title, i.e. FR-OS, and it will link to the LAMP-International website to the French article which breaks down the sizes and then presents a lot more information about French posters and industry. If anyone has other questions.. OR would like me to show them more email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll be glad to. ed J R wrote: Doug, One of the first places to check for info like this is the LAMP poster database at www.learnaboutmovieposters.com -- even though Ed and Sue had a server crash which forced them to rebuild the database, they are getting up to speed on it now and there is usually info and pictures on most titles. In the case of Amelie, LAMP does not indicate any US paper, and shows pictures of the Italian poster and a Japanese version (nowhere near as good as the Italian). This doesn't mean for sure that there isn't any US paper, but it's a good indication that there might not be. Sometimes when I'm looking for a second opinion I actually go to www.moviegoods.com -- which I'm sure horrifies some people... Yes, they sell almost exclusively prints and reproductions, but they do list one heck of a lot of titles and often have examples of Style B, C, half-sheets and overseas variations that can be hard to find a picture of anywhere else. On Amelie, however, they only show the Italian, which kind of tends to confirm the info on LAMP that there is no US paper. -- JR - Original Message - From: Doug Taylor To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Thursday, March 24, 2005 11:06 Subject: [MOPO] Amelie help, please I love this film and the whimsical image (green background, smiling face) associated with it. I have restored 6 VERTIGO one sheets and three have been slightly different in the orange screen color. One was very red-orange. I have found the flat orange color to be inconsistent on the rest of the the paper as well including lobby cards. The one sheets seem to be printed on the cheapest paper and I would suppose the printing process was a major pain. Remember the cheapest materials were used and the Saul Bass design was not easy to reproduce. The flat coverage of that off orange color must have driven the printers mad. I sometimes feel like an archeologist wishing I could have been there in 1958 watching how these posters were printed. Re: [MOPO] Amelie help, please
Doug, One of the first places to check for info like this is the LAMP poster database at www.learnaboutmovieposters.com -- even though Ed and Sue had a server crash which forced them to rebuild the database, they are getting up to speed on it now and there is usually info and pictures on most titles. [MOPO] Bruce's auction - discounts
The one sheet of Iron Duke (1934) starring George Arliss went for $192 in Bruce's auction. I have a mint half sheet of the same title, a much more pleasing poster. It is stone cold mint, never folded and a sight to behold. PLUS - I even have a better title of Arliss -CARDINAL RICHELEAU also 1934. Also mint, never folded, and a wonder to behold. Crisp, clean, as though it was just off the press (both half sheets). $425.00 for the pair. JPGs are available, Some wiggle room if you have something I might be interested in. You really might one to look at the JPGs on these. The HS are sensational. Henry The Poster Mint www.ThePosterMint.com
