Date: Wed, 1 Feb 2006 23:19:59 -0500 Hi, all. This is my first MoPo post. My very first poster dates me back to the 70s as well. It was a one-sheet for Ralph Bakshi's Heavy Traffic. I got it when I was a member of my college film society. I think it was an extra copy we got by accident, otherwise it would've been returned to the distributor. Either that or it was a spare. Anyway, still have it, though it's in pretty rough shape. Gotten a better copy since then. Hope I did this right. Never posted to a listserv before. Great question Michael...of course it may date a few of us... :) I'd like to break this down into 2 parts--the 1st poster I ever owned and the 1st poster I ever paid for. My local movie theatre manager started giving me one-sheets when I was in High School writing reviews for the school newspaper. I needed them for the credit information when I was writing my reviews, or so I told him! (I hadn't ever heard of a press book at that time, not that my small-town theatre would have had one anyway!) He gave me the one-sheet for Paper Moon, which I still have today. I wanted The Poseidon Adventure but he'd already given it away. The first one-sheet I ever PAID for was Summer of '42 which I bought via mail order from Marc Ricci's (sp??) Memory Shop in New York. I think I paid $2.75 for it. Incidentally, Sumer of '42 was the first R-rated movie I was able to see on my own, so buying the poster seemed logical. Of course the movie is rated PG today. Three 3 Sheets ("Help" "Let It Be" "Hard Day's Night") and a one sheet ("Yellow Submarine") all atthe sametime in 1980. I think they may have come from Jerry Ohlinger's store in NYC. After that didn't pursue or think about a poster until 2002 when I inncocently just went looking for "Joan of Arc" {Bergman) and "Last Temptation of Christ" one sheets. I made the mistake of checking out eBay and got snagged ... HARD. Re: [MOPO] Who Cares About Your First Poster??
Scott, Why are you surprised at me? I said that if what one really wanted was to ask people about was how they got into poster collecting, why not ask *that* question, is all. How people got into the hobby is an interesting subject -- and that's what a lot of people have gone on to talk about in the process of revealing what their first poster was. But just asking for a people to list what their first poster was -- which was what the question asked -- didn't strike me as being particularly interesting. If the question had been framed as how did you start collecting movie posters? my response would have been completely different... in fact, I would have told my how I got into this story (again). Perhaps I didn't read between the lines of the original question. I dunno. I do think there is a danger to these kind of polling questions if they start coming fast and furious. You can end up with lots of people jumping on the bandwagon, each one trying to come up with their own What is ... or What was... polling question and end up with bunches of replies on such deep topics as What is your favorite Madonna video? etc. But a question like, how did you start collecting movie posters? would be just fine with me. I too have enjoyed the responses from people who have used the first poster question as a spring board to actually tell us their how-I-got-into-this stories. -- JR - Original Message - From: Scott Burns [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Thursday, February 02, 2006 12:17 Subject: [MOPO] Who Cares About Your First Poster?? JR - I think you are being a bit silly to be honest. It ooks like you are the only one that doesn't care. A whole lot of people do care and replied to the email. Why are you trying to spoil it for people? If you don't care then fair enough. I don't care about some things. I usually find the delete key is the best thing for that rather than interupt an interesting topic that many have enjoyed. I for one and I'm sure many agree, that I have enjoyed reading the wide variation of posters that people consider to be their Gem! It bring another perspective to the hobby rather than reading the same old thing every day. I'm not trying to tell you what your opinions should be, but to say who cares in a reply just shows a lack of Intelligence not Interest. [MOPO] First Poster
I'm not certain it's the first poster I ever bought, but it may be, and it's the first poster I remember buying. At the Columbus Cinevent in 1970 I paid $175, for a stone lithograph 1-sheet of Charlie Chaplin's one reel short, CRUEL, CRUEL LOVE. It was Chaplin's eighth film, released March 28, 1914. His first film had been released February 2, 1914, just 52 days earlier. It is the earliest extant Chaplin poster that I know of. (I have seen a stock poster that advertises an earlier short, but that might have been printed at a later date). The poster shows a "pre-tramp" Chaplin, romancing his leading lady. I remember the purchase vividly, because some fellow film buffs, mercilessly ridiculed me for spending so much money for a poster! Why, I could have bought a 16mm print of the film for less money! I still have the poster. Marty DavisVintage Film Posters43215 N. Re: [MOPO] First Poster
Marty funny story.. In 1966, comic dealer Ken Mitchell asked if there would ever be a $200 comic book. The following month Howard Rogofsky listed a Superman #1 for $300. Everyone laughed at him.. The more things change.. anyway, my first poster was Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, then a lobby set for Day the Earth Stood Still.. I got them in 1967 when I was 10 from my old friend, the late Mark Carducci - screenwriter of Pumpkinhead. I don't have them anymore.. sold them by 1970. I also got two 6 sheets not long after from author Richard Bojarski. They were Universals!! Invisible Man's Revenge and Dead Man's Eyes original release. I sold the Invisible poster in 1989 or so to good ol' Brucie.. But I still have the DME Rich== At 01:43 PM 2/2/2006, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm not certain it's the first poster I ever bought, but it may be, and it's the first poster I remember buying. And I agree with both Sue and Scott with a nod to JR for his suggestion as well.My first poster was a US insert from the 1954 Warner Bros' release, A STAR IS BORN with Judy Garland. My friend Al in New Orleans offered it to me and I bought it. Later I bought a few more posters from-- then his entire collection, which consisted of many US ones, halves and inserts from 50s CinemaScope films. Even later I discovered Ebay and began bidding. LOVED IT! I had been around posters all my life being raised in a small town movie house (theatre), but, I was young and didn't really care much. However, this was a bit later'; was late 60's early 70's and it got my attention! Anyway, I bought it for $40 bucks and I'm sorry to say I do not have it any longer.THE ALMIGHTY $ GOT TO ME! On the other hand, I sold it for 1% (around that) the going rate today for it..Always kicked myself for not keeping that poster, not because value, but...the absolutely gorgeous graphic. Re: [MOPO] FW: First Poster
My first poster was the OS of THE HAUNTING. Robert Wise signed it and then later Nelson Gidding who became my writing mentor. Igor Edelman linenbacked it. He actually didn't want to do it because it wasn't one of the old stone lithos he usually does, but when he saw Robert Wise's name on it, he did it. Three greats touched that poster. I asked the local theater in my hometown in Austria if he could sell me some posters. This was around 1974. He told me that he needs to send them all back but he will look around. He gave me one poster, Stanley Kubrick's CLockwork Orange. At this time, I did not know anything about this movie but I loved the artwork. I still have it. Unfortunately, this movie theater closed many years ago. I still love the poster and it is one of better movies ever made. I purchased many posters from one firm in Germany by mail. It was a lot of fun then and now. Great topic gang! Re: [MOPO] FW: First Poster
My first purchase comprised of a North by Northwest and Saboteur Belgian and a Dial M for Murder French. Probably not a bad selection for my first few and I actually picked them up in Australia. I didnt know too much about what was or was not a good buy in those days and the next few purchases were not good ones with a dodgy dealer taking advantage of my lack of knowledge at the time. Re: [MOPO] Who Cares About Your First Poster??
Andy, Mellow out. Read what is written, not what you think is written. Fact: I did not change the subject line of this thread to who cares about your first poster?? I don't know who did that (but I think it may have been Scott B, of all people...) If you check my original post on the subject (see below) you'll see I replied to the original subject of what was your first poster and left the subject line intact -- and simply offered my personal opinion that it didn't seem to me that a simple listing of the title of someone's first poster sounded very interesting. I still don't think it is, and the posts which have done nothing more than list their first poster I just don't find interesting. If you do, that's fine. I certainly did NOT suggest to people that they should not to respond to the question, just that as phrased it didn't sound very interesting. In the same message I then went on to say that stories about how I got into movie poster collecting -- which would necessarily include my first poster -- is something I *would* find interesting and that perhaps the question should have been phrased that way. But if you choose to conclude that I really don't care what anyone's first poster was, you're probably right. I never thought about it before now, but why should I care what anyone's first poster was? What is so interesting about that as a stand alone fact? Now, the story of how they got into collecting, that's different. -- JR - Original Message - From: Andy Neal [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Thursday, February 02, 2006 14:11 Subject: Re: [MOPO] Who Cares About Your First Poster?? (I'm not meaning that horrible way, I'm just trying to point out how it looks) Regards Andy Original Message Follows From: JR [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: JR [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Subject: Re: [MOPO] Who Cares About Your First Poster?? Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2006 13:09:43 -0500 Scott, Why are you surprised at me?
