Re: [MOPO] "Prada" dents "Superman Returns" box office.

2006-07-03 Thread Toochis Morin
I'm going to see DWP tonight and I'm sure Meryl will be stellar.  I saw SUPERMAN last night.  It was a full house at the Egyptian.  What bothered me about the film is they gave Routh nothing to do.  I don't think the actor should get the brunt especially when the whole cast was pretty stilted as well.  While it's okay to go for the Messiah myth, it would have been nice to give him some depth...dare I say, humanity.  There was no character development.  I felt the filmmakers took themselves too seriously. And they did not use Eva Marie Saint enough.  I met her just after she finished filming Superman and she was so delighted and enjoyed the entire workinig experience. That said, this audience went along for the ride.  They enjoyed it and clapped after it was over.  People were in the mood for this film and even though it underdelivered, the audience took it to the finish line.ToochisKirby

  Lonesome Ghosts Come to
  Heritage!

Before Carl Kolchak kept the world safe from
supernatural beasties, before Bill Murray and the Ghostbusters first got
slimed, even before Scooby Doo and the gang first fired up the Mystery
Machine, there was another who kept the world safe from ectoplasmic
entities. His name was Mickey Mouse.
By 1937, Mickey had almost a decade of experience
under his animated belt. Originally a solo star, Disney execs had started
teaming Mickey with Donald Duck and Goofy with increasing regularity
beginning in 1935. The results were some of the funniest cartoons of
  Mickey's career.
Lonesome Ghosts (1937) was by no means
Mickey's first encounter with the supernatural; that honor would go to
Haunted House (1929). It was, however, his first outing as a
"Ghostbuster" with Donald and Goofy, and is fondly remembered as one of
the best Disney cartoons of the 1930s.
When Disney signed with distributor RKO in 1937, they
ceased producing one sheets for their shorts, a practice that would
continue until late 1938. In the
meantime, they created strikingly beautiful - and exceedingly rare - 30" x
40" silkscreen posters to promote their films. The oversized sheets (one
sheets typically measure 27" x 41") have proven quite popular with
collectors on the infrequent occasions that they are offered.
Making this particular poster even more desirable, is that this is the only known copy of
the 30" x 40" for Lonesome Ghosts, all the rest having been lost
to the ravages of time. Paperbacked and in lovely condition, this
exquisite poster is sure be one of the stars of our upcoming
  auction.
Rare Disney material has proven quite popular in our
  last few Signature auctions. Earlier
this year, in our March 2006 auction, we sold the one sheet to The Mad
Doctor for an impressive $138,000. That same auction saw the one
sheet to Mickey's Nightmare fetch $54,625. As our offering of
Lonesome Ghosts is the only copy known to exist, I'm anxious to
see the bidding frenzy that this poster will create.
The Lonesome Ghosts (RKO, 1937) Poster (30" X
40") will be offered in Heritage Auction Galleries' upcoming Vintage Movie
Poster Signature Auction, to be held July 12 & 13, 2006 in Dallas,
Texas. For more information, or to bid online, please visit www.HeritageAuctions.com/MoviePosters.
  Lonesome Ghosts (RKO, 1937) Poster (30" X
  40")Estimate: $25,000 -
  $45,000

it is more enjoyable than "Superman Returns" but not in ways I

** "The Devil Wears Prada" is a wisp of a movie with a linear rags
to riches Cinderella structure w/the obligatory princess being
forced to choose between an upscale career and shallow boyfriend
vs. a down-home and more "pure" career with a different boyfriend.

** But it's beautifully cast in ways that makes one forgive
simplistic formulas; Streep is magificent and Hathaway is radiant
-- it's great to see Streep re-capture the glamour for which she's
always been capable, but not seen rarely in recent films; her looks
are flamboyant but her performance is not; this is minimalist
Streep and she's marvelous.

** The film has been altered from the book to give Streep's
character a dose of humanity/insecurity and is the better for it;
it's a great, fact-based story, though gussied-up and "MTV'd" a bit
too much to cater to women, which represents the bulk of this
film's audience. Note that more men made "Superman Returns" the
champ this weekend; women tend to be less enthusiastic or are being
dragged along by their boyfriends.

** But Streep commands "Prada" like a true star. The film has a
very smug and satisfying ending; you end up hating and rooting for
her character at the same time; I don't think Streep would have
taken the role otherwise. It's a defining role in her stellar
career. I hope Oscar voters remember this performance, but I doubt
they will.

** And Anne Hathaway has made me forgive her horrible performance
in "Brokeback Mountain." She has the perfect look and persona to
pull off her tranformation from wide-eyed innocent to New York
designer label babe without making you wince. And New York and
Paris have never looked more glamorous and romantic.

** BTW, back to "Superman Returns." One thing I keep forgetting to
mention is it was shot almost entirely in Australia. Yet another
US-financed picture shot in Sydney! What is going on that has made
the land "down under" the optimum venue to shoot blockbuster
films? It's gotta be more than just cost. Any of our Aussie
friends on MoPo have ideas? 20th Century Fox goes to Mexico to
shoot its sea-faring films and then to Australia to have it stand
in for New York.

'Superman' Performs Solidly,
But 'Prada' Dents Take
By KATE KELLY

"Superman Returns," Warner Bros. Entertainment's reinvention of the
Man of Steel franchise, sold $52.2 million in tickets in U.S.
theaters during its opening weekend, as the fashion-industry satire
"The Devil Wears Prada" siphoned off many female moviegoers.

That estimated three-day performance for "Superman" placed it
firmly within the top five Independence Day film releases, and the
film has taken in $84.2 million since its release late Tuesday night.

But it couldn't top last year's "War of the Worlds" or 2004's
"Spider-Man II." Moreover, "Superman" next weekend faces Walt
Disney Co.'s "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which is
performing extremely well in pre-release audience polls.

Executives at Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., said they
were pleased with the performance of "Superman." Dan Fellman,
Warner's president of domestic distribution, said the five-day
performance was a record for the studio and predicted the film
would take in about $110 million during its first full week.

"Any time you do $100 million in seven days, you're in good shape,"
he said.

Overseas, the film took in an estimated $19.8 million in 11
territories that included Australia and parts of Asia.

"Superman Returns" was a labor of love for Warner Bros. The studio
spent more than 10 years tinkering with ideas, and about $60
million in costs for new scripts, directors, and other costs were
written off. Ultimately, the movie cost Warner about $209 million
to make.

During its first five days, the audience for "Superman Returns" was
57% men. The balance was mainly women over 25, with younger women
counting for just 16%.

"The Devil Wears Prada," the Twentieth Century Fox movie about a
fashion-magazine assistant and her fearsome boss, took in an
estimated $27 million in its first three days in U.S. theaters,
driven by an audience that was 72% female.

Re: [MOPO] Superman, another opinion

2006-07-03 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

I can't wait to see it.
Bryan Singer is one of the most talented and interesting of directors
working today in big budget films.

Both X-MEN 1 and 2 remain high watermarks in the comics into movies genre.

His USUAL SUSPECTS was and remains an instant classic, and APT PUPIL
tackled a difficult and uncomfortable King story extremely well.

Foxnews minions outing him as being gay (BFD) and trashing the film was
standard Fox behaviour towards a rival
product in the marketplace. All this claptrap about the X-MEN films
being code for "gays" is just that - claptrap and again remains no BFD.

I've just started watching the George Reeves TV series sets, and seasons
1 and 2 (just released here) and they have a surprisingly tough edge
here and there. I haven't seen them since my childhood (45 years ago!)
and they are a real treat to savour and a surprising one.

Richard Donner's SUPERMAN 1 and 2 (yes, Dick Lester, etc, etc) are a
great double feature and work really well when watched as one epic film.
I haven't been able to watch them since Chris Reeve's tragic accident
because I'm no good watching films through a veil of tears.

Curious what the Richard Donner SUPERMAN 1 and 2 will reveal.

I am a fan of the original Superman films, but I'm confused how anyone
could call this film a remake. Are there huge similarities, yes, but
so what? Are there huge similarities one comic to the next? Sure, and
without complaint.

One thing, to be clear, this film takes place 5 years after Superman
2. Bryan Singer decidedly ignored parts 3 and 4 and that was ok, I
ignored part 3 only minutes after I saw it (only to be reminded over
and over again by it's seemingly never ending poster supply on ebay)
and never saw 4. And to only notice Bryan Singer for his work in the
X-Men films is insulting. The Usual Suspects remains one of the
greatest directed films of the 90's, and both X-men and Superman show
what can happen if you take a very smart director and give them comic
book material. You get a fun, and enjoyable, and yes, overall
intelligent and geniuine, though not genuis, film.

The cast is fine and the script in a dialogue sense if passable. Bryan
Singer does share story credit and not screenplay credit. I'm sure
he's at least somewhat responsible, but fair is fair, he didn't write
this. And so what if he did? It's not award worthy but it's not poorly
written. The story is really rather strong, but not without obvious
large, okay, some huge, but action film plot holes.

Superman Returns is pure fun.

Why call it remake that the returning hero takes Lois Lane on a late
nice New York flight again. Have you never gone back to someone you
left? And if you did did you not attempt to relieve the more magical
moments of your time together?

Well if you did, that makes you a remake. If you and you're exes most
magical moment was a beautiful wine and cheese picnic on the top of
your favorite hill and you try to recreate that, you aren't recreating.

You're a brainless remake.

Give me a break. In this film, and there's no real spoilers in this,
Superman is trying to rewin Lois from a mortal, but very smart,
capable, and rich, version of himself. So he recreates some classic
scenes the two shared. Okay, maybe some very mild spoilers here. My
real regret was that Lex Luther wasn't a big enough deal, theres a
humorous moment as people discuss how important it is Superman hasn't
been news for 5 years, and Luther is discredited beause he hasn't been
news for 5 years. Of course, researching him at that point might have
well, spoiled things, but it's a popcorn film, get over it.

Give this film a break ultimately. It's a fun film designed to remind
people that a man can fly. Is it better than the first? Worse? Equal?
Who cares! It's fun. I don't regreat watching it, and I feel bad for
anyone who did and couldn't just enjoy it.
