Once linen backed, who will see it? And there are already plenty of

So Lucasfilm didn't know that the fan club was buying and selling
bootlegs - in other words the official fan club was not getting their
endless stocks of one sheets (and later REVENGE OF THE JEDI one

Did "J. Seymour" have a connection with Lucasfilm? How were these

Wait - we tried to have this conversation before on NSF and it all
fell in a heap when no one could remember the history of US comics
distributors from the late 1980s..

Wars Style A 77/21-0 bootleg

Hello everyone.

I'm sure most of you are sick of hearing about these

bootlegs.but here is some information some of you may
appreciate.

We recently acquired 600 (2 original undisturbed rolls of 300)

STAR WARS Style A 77/21-0 "first printing" bootlegs from a
dealer who purchased them direct from the source (J.
Seymour) *back in 1989*. As soon as she realized she
was burned and that they weren't real, she put them in a
closet and tried to forget about them. She realized she should
have known better, that it was too good to be true. She sent
them to us in January 2009. They are mostly all in Near Mint
to Mint unused condition.

We are offering them *FREE* to anyone who requests one.

We have stamped the back of each one a few times with a 1/2"

x 2" permanent ink stamp that says: "*THIS IS NOT AN ORIGINAL
MOVIE POSTER*". This will make it extremely difficult for
anyone to mistake them for originals (or to possibly try and
pass them off as such) at some time in the future. If some
idiot tries to linen back one to hide the stamps, I would
expect (and hope) that the linen backer will be honest and do
the right thing and NOT do it.

Again, we are offering these *FREE* to anyone who requests

one. *One per person* *while supplies last*. All we ask is
that you pay $9.95 for shipping. We ship in a high quality
plastic tube by Priority mail. If you'd like one of these
"original bootlegs" please just email us and we will send you
a paypal invoice. *We will also include one for free to anyone
who orders a rolled poster from our store or to anyone who
wins one of our current ebay auctions *(you must request it
though when ordering and it must be a rolled poster that you win).

Over the years we have auctioned this bootleg (correctly

described as a bootleg) on ebay at no reserve 3 or 4 times
with prices ranging from $30.00 to $80.00.

These are THE SAME EXACT posters currently being sold by

others on ebay (wrongly described as originals) for over $100.00.

If any of you crazy skeptics think we are doing this to make

money.please do the math$2.00 for a tube, $6.00 for
postage, $1.00 for my employee labor for packaging time, $.85
to paypal.

_Why are we doing this?_

1. It would be silly to destroy them (we get requests for them

all the time). We did actually consider burning them and
filming the video for our website and youtube (wouldn't that
be neat!).

2. It is an extremely high quality rolled one sheet.just

as nice as the originalin every way.

3. It is a much more affordable alternative (*FREE!*) compared

to buy

Haha. That's hilarious ! My coffee almost went up my nose when I read that ! :)

Good one, Bruce :D

Hmm , as a huge fan of Star Wars, and a modest collector of movie
posters, I am really happy that David Lieberman is doing this , and I
have already requested for my copy of this bootleg. ( THANKS, DAVID !!! )

What am I going to do with it ? I'm going to put it up on my wall ,
of course , and if anyone asks me about it, I'll tell them it's a
bootleg, and I'll tell them how to spot the bootlegs of this poster,
so they will never get burned.

I love this iconic poster, and I will gladly enjoy it , even though I
know it's a bootleg , because I could never afford and original one.

And since this bootleg will be up on my wall, that's at least one
less out there for the unscrupulous sellers to sell off as an original. :)

Just my humble perspective on this controversial issue...

Thanks again for doing this, David :)

2009-03-13 Thread Kenwick Cook
Since I am the only MoPo member who had the guts to publicly admit
requesting a copy for my friend and I, I thought I'd at least point out that I
was NOT
one of the 17 people to e-mail Bruce on this (LOL).

I also failed to mention that the repro my friend almost bought at Hasting's
looked like CRAP! Sure, Lucasfilms might have gotten a percentage for the
Hasting's repro, but let's face it... if the legendary bootleg fooled the big
auction houses, well, I'd rather have that one... hair-or-no-hair on Luke's
belt.

I would also like to have one for reference... Someday, (when I can afford
it) I would like to replace my original, and having a boot for reference
would ensure that I don't get burned.

After sleeping on it, I also couldn't help but remember my friend's bedroom
walls are currently in the transition of either re-painting or wallpaper...
gosh, wouldn't it be cool to have at least one wall completely plastered with
these things? Probably neater than anything he could get at Sherwin Williams.

you aren't really giving the people on mopo or linen backers around the
world any credit are you? Expecting the worst from them. Are there dishonest
linen backers/restorers out there? Are there criminals on mopo that would take
the time and money (a lot of time and money.the 4 or 5 stamps we put on
the
back are not easy to remove and linen backing is not cheap) for the ONE
poster we are making available to them? Highly unlikely.

Really really no reason to start circulating most hated SW bootlegs

Again, here are 7 reasons:

Why are we doing this?

1. It would be silly to destroy them (we get requests for them all the time
- 31 so far since yesterday evening). We did actually consider burning them
and filming the video for our website and youtube (wouldn't that be neat!).

2. It is an extremely high quality rolled one sheet.just as nice as the
originalin every way.

3. It is a much more affordable alternative (FREE!) compared to buying an
original rolled one (over $1000.00) or compared to buying one of these
bootlegs
on ebay for over $100.00.

4. It will help to educate collectors.

5. Like it or not, they are a part of movie poster collecting history.

6. It could possibly help to diminish the market for them. Of course it
won't stop all newbies from getting stung on ebay (no one can stop that I'm
afraid).

7. Because we can. It is our little way of saying "Thank You" to the movie
poster collecting world!

Re: [MOPO] AW: [MOPO] help please with CASABLANCA poster

2009-03-13 Thread Helmut Hamm
For one, this was only four years after the end of World War II, so
'designing' movie poster maybe didn't have top priority at the time.

Also, in 1949 was not the classic it is today, it was just 'another'
movie. It took another three years for CASABLANCA to be shown in
Germany (1952) and
the German poster only has a large portrait of Ingrid Bergman,
Humphrey Bogart is NOT on the poster!

In 1952, Ingrid Bergman was already a big star with German audiences,
while Bogart was still a rather unknown B-movie actor.

While I'm at it, let me take the chance to point out a bunch of
posters I listed on eBay yesterday, both in the store and for auction.

No CASABLANCA, but several other french Film Noirs posters are included:

Thanks for your interest,

Hey Mopo:?
?
I've been complaining about this crap for literally decades, yet nothing ever
changes. Whenever there's a major poster auction, this seems to be the thought
process behind it:?
?
1. Let's not tell anyone about this auction. It's so unbelievably amazing that
poster collectors will actually come to seek us out in order to bid. No need to
publicize or bring in bidders (why should we spend a penny of our oversized
consignment fees on marketing, when eBay doesn't bother???). We're making 6
figures on this auction, why waste two minutes writing an email to large groups
of potential bidders??
2. Where are the Women, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Forbidden Planet one sheets
going to be in this auction? Let's screw with everyone and put an Invasion of
the Saucermen 6sh up for bids - ha, just kidding, let's go with the one sheet
again...?
3. Instead of getting rare posters that people actually want, let's just fill
the auction with silent posters, classics, horror/sci-fi & James Bond... Oh
hell, let's just go with nothing but Bond...?
4. We gotta have a couple newer posters for all our bidders under 60, but let's
not go with anything unusual - just the Godfather, Taxi Driver, A Clockwork
Orange and Dirty Harry one sheets. Maybe if we're feeling nice, we'll throw in
a Pulp Fiction...?
5. We're American, so let's screw all our foreign bidders! Let's not mail the
catalog until less than a week from the auction. That way, no one outside of
the States will be able to bid unless they know of the auction in advance (see
#1) and jump through additional hoops.?
6. Let's make it as impossible to bid as possible. Let's make all our bidders
jump through even more hoops and have to pre-register or get 8 levels of
approval to bid. We wouldn't want just anyone being allowed to bid...?
?
Of course, there are a couple exceptions, but those really prove the rule...?

2009-03-13 Thread Jeff Potokar

bruce,

why is that the people who proliferate the bootleg business, STAY in
business? you receive 17 emails of the type you did... and, yet, all
he can continue to do is harp on his 7 pathetic reasons about WHY it
is good that he put more fakes into the marketplace (let alone the
fact he has made hundreds of dollars selling this crap on ebay, in
the past).

it is maddening -- and also, for me at least, is a HUGE red flag:
STAY AWAY from this one.

i was digging looking at many archive entries from NS4 and these
"fake/bootleg/unauthorized re-strike" situations by DL have been
talked about and exposed by many others, there, as well.

anything for a buck, it seems.

Re: [MOPO] AW: [MOPO] help please with CASABLANCA poster

2009-03-13 Thread CK MacLeod
If there had been a scene with a movie theater in THE THIRD MAN, that
CASABLANCA poster might have appeared in the b.g. - and would have
symbolized the social, cultural, and economic exhaustion of post-war Vienna.

The anti-Nazi theme of CASABLANCA would have made it a particularly
interesting export in that context. No offense intended to anyone, but,
just as an historical observation, there was a joke frequently told among
Americans traveling in Austria and Germany in that era: Q: What's the
difference between Germans and Austrians? A: The Germans WERE Nazis. (I
was born in Vienna, of American parents, and heard the joke from my parents
years later.)

The MPEA symbol suggests to me that the printing might either have been done
in the US or at least that the poster was designed under US tutelage.

For one, this was only four years after the end of World War II, so
'designing' movie poster maybe didn't have top priority at the time.

Also, in 1949 was not the classic it is today, it was just 'another'
movie. It took another three years for CASABLANCA to be shown in Germany
(1952) and
the German poster only has a large portrait of Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey
Bogart is NOT on the poster!

In 1952, Ingrid Bergman was already a big star with German audiences,
while Bogart was still a rather unknown B-movie actor.

While I'm at it, let me take the chance to point out a bunch of posters I
listed on eBay yesterday, both in the store and for auction.

No CASABLANCA, but several other french Film Noirs posters are included:

[MOPO] FA: 999 title & scene lobby cards AND 928 lots of 2 lobby cards at auction end 3/17 & 3/19!

2009-03-13 Thread Bruce Hershenson
* Register for our Auctions*
*Over 4,987 movie paper collectors have registered to bid in our auctions,
but if you are one of the few movie paper collectors who have not yet
registered to bid on our site, go
HEREto do so.
* You need to register separately for our auctions on our own site, because
the auctions are managed by an auction software company, and you need to
create your own user ID and password (of course, your ID and password from
any other auction site won't work in our auctions!). It only takes a couple
of minutes to do, and it is a one time thing, and thousands of our customers
have already done so!
--

*Your money goes further with us!*
In these uncertain economic times, doesn't it make sense to spend your
money where it goes the absolute furthest? We auction everything with a $1
opening bid and no reserves, so we truly sell many items for just $1 or $2
or $3 (there are other auction places that have the nerve to claim they sell
their items with $1 and no reserve like we do, but they have a minimum $9
buyers premium, which means those $1, $2, and $3 posters *ACTUALLY* cost you
$10, $11, and $12)! We have *NO* buyers premiums, and we only charge the
actual cost of shipping (often less, when a buyer buys multiple items). We
regularly give lots of great bonuses, often more valuable than the items
required to qualify for them!
This week, we are auctioning *nearly 2,000 items *in our Tuesday and
Thursday auctions, and it is virtually a certainty that some percentage of
them will sell for "bargain" prices, and there may be some absolute
"steals"! Remember that, unlike the majority of "hobbies", where the money
you spend on your hobby is gone forever, the money you spend buying movie
paper will almost certainly be recovered the day you ever sell your
collection (and many, many collectors have made lots of money on their
collection over time, because unlike stocks, vintage movie paper continually
rises over time!).

That would sure make it hard for the "bad guys" to sell any of theirs!

you aren't really giving the people on mopo or linen backers around
the world any credit are you? Expecting the worst from them. Are
there dishonest linen backers/restorers out there? Are there
criminals on mopo that would take the time and money (a lot of time
and money.the 4 or 5 stamps we put on the back are not easy to
remove and linen backing is not cheap) for the ONE poster we are
making available to them? Highly unlikely.

Really really no reason to start circulating most hated SW bootlegs

Again, here are 7 reasons:

Why are we doing this?

1. It would be silly to destroy them (we get requests for them all
the time - 31 so far since yesterday evening). We did actually
consider burning them and filming the video for our website and
youtube (wouldn't that be neat!).

2. It is an extremely high quality rolled one sheet.just as nice
as the originalin every way.

3. It is a much more affordable alternative (FREE!) compared to
buying an original rolled one (over $1000.00) or compared to buying
one of these bootlegs on ebay for over $100.00.

4. It will help to educate collectors.

5. Like it or not, they are a part of movie poster collecting history.

6. It could possibly help to diminish the market for them. Of course
it won't stop all newbies from getting stung on ebay (no one can
stop that I'm afraid).

7. Because we can. It is our little way of saying "Thank You" to the
movie poster collecting world!

[MOPO] Attention STAR WARS Collectors: FREE Star Wars Style A 77/21-0 bootleg

2009-03-13 Thread David Lieberman

wellas usualyou can't please everybody.

over 50 people now have made the request..so its pretty obvious the
majority of experienced collectors out there do not have any problems owning a
clearly marked bootleg (especially when its FREE!!)

it's just sad that one of the louder inexperienced ones can't see how this
benefits collectors.

oh well!!

and to think we are doing this for the money is just preposterous.

an analogy:

A seemingly trustworthy guy buys a gun from a gun storehe said he needed
it for protection. The gun store owner ran a background check and he cleared
it. The gun buyer then goes out and kills someone. Is this the gun store
owners fault? Do you blame them?

A seemingly trustworthy mopo member gets one of the bootlegs free from
CineMasterpieces..the mopo member said they wanted it to educate
themselves.
It is clearly marked as a bootleg and there is no way it can be mistaken for a
real one in its current conditionhe then goes through extraordinary
lengths to erase/bleach the stamps out from the back of the poster and/or gets
it
linen backed from a dishonest linen backer and sells it to another collector
for a nice profit. He rips him off!! Is this the fault of CineMasterpieces??
Do you blame them?

"Why not put this on eBay as a permanent "buy it now" for say $14.99, with
the full explanation?"

That was actually our first plan!! but then we decided it would be fun to
give them away for FREE to the good people of mopo and movieposter forum.

I'll probably list them on ebay eventually...in the reproductions section
for $10.00 or sobut only after everyone here stops asking us for a free
one!!

I also asked for  a Copy, I have handled very few SW posters (I actually don't
like to) but anyway a fake for comparison is a good idea for anyone (I think)
who deals in posters.
Dave also gave me a repro double sided Spiderman last year, again, it wont be
for sale, its just handy to have fakes to compare, especially for posters you
dont often deal with.

Since I am the only MoPo member who had the guts to publicly admit
requesting a copy for my friend and I, I thought I'd at least point out that I
was NOT one of the 17 people to e-mail Bruce on this (LOL).

I also failed to mention that the repro my friend almost bought at
Hasting's looked like CRAP! Sure, Lucasfilms might have gotten a percentage for
the Hasting's repro, but let's face it... if the legendary bootleg fooled the
big auction houses, well, I'd rather have that one... hair-or-no-hair on Luke's

Probably neater than anything he could get at Sherwin
Williams.

Ahh, but there's the rub... If people actually used Mac's on any widespread
