We're looking for:

I just got back from 10 days in the Costa Rica rain forest, away from
all news and computers. Looks like things on MOPO were kinda dead while
I was gone...

By the way, the e-mail jokes have already started

"When Farrah Fawcett died and arrived at the Pearly Gates, God granted
her one wish for all of her accomplishments throughout her life. When
God asked her what her wish was, she replied, 'I wish for all the
children on Earth to be safe.' God immediately killed Michael Jackson."

Michael probably will not know of the classlessness of Rodxmorgan.
Michael might have been flattered. But those touched and saddened by
the unexpected death of Michael must have felt Rodxmorgan's
insensitivity.

You have to look at the totality of the circumstances. While people
were reading MOPO mail prior to the announcement and being tuned
into Fox News or CNN or the radio, did not need to see this insensitivity.

I remember as a little boy when President Kennedy was killed, tons of
commemorative coins, plaques, etc. hit the market. YES, for profit!
And the Elvis souvenirs! Bruce had a one sheet of Ed McMahon end last
night, and a half sheet started last night. I didn't see him shout,
"GET EM WHILE THEIR HOT".

It is all in the approach.Rodxmorgan approached this in a
classless manner.

We all know the Michael jokes, yet i don't believe Letterman or Leno
(if they weren't pre-empted) or anyone in Vegas was doing them last
night.

I once asked a question on MOPO as to whether the death of a star
generates extra value in posters. If it is true that it does, it
isn't ghoulish.

The problem with Rodxmorgan was his approach. It was wrong.

Re: [MOPO] the tasteless, classless post of Rodxmorgan

2009-07-01 Thread Nick Lykiardopulo

I do not usually post here but would like to point out that, whilst agreeing
with the sentiment expressed,? 'tasteless' means lacking in taste or bland and
'classless' means without a system of class (eg a classless society) and that
'in poor taste' or 'lacking in class' are not derogatory enough to be used to
describe the insensitivity and greed shown by rodxmorgan. May I, therefore,
suggest that we settle on 'uncivilised' which seems to sum up both of these
concepts; unless, ofcourse anyone has a better suggestion?

2009-07-01 Thread Tom Martin
well I think the armor we made back in 83 was used by Jackson and is
on display in the Grammy museum

I was watchin CNN and they showed it

We made Legg gauntlets ( scaled leg armor ) and the ones they had
looked like ours however modified

The story behind the armor - I was at a auction and bought a semi load
of white Footbal shoulder pad parts,,

I called Lucasfilm to sell it to be used as Stormtrooper armor... they
had just shelved the Star wars franchise.

So I called Doud white makeup effects... he bought some for a gilm
called metalsorm... Peter mosen of starlog

Bought some to make a ceylon centurion and also a Rock group called
THOR also Clyde Calwell a artist

of Dungeon and dragons fame used it for packageing..\

Basically we took the pieces and plated them in Chrome... sold through
Morris costumes in Charlotte NC.

We also made some spiked leather and accessorys and advertised in back
of Starlog sold as

Warrior fantasy Armor. actually used a local Female impersonator in
the photos because he was the only

one that would dress that wild in 1983 Funny eh?? Now is the norm..
go figure

So it appears Michael Jackson did use our armor or at least parts..

we also had contacted WB about making Mad max jackets as we had the
exact parts However they wanted 50K upfront so we never did them

The idea was to have Miller and Gibson sign them and do a collectable piece.

O when I bid on the shoulder pad parts... the auctioner thought
I was a nut as no one wanted the
Lot... so when I offered 2.00 for a 48 foot truck full... he pointed and
said SOLD!!!

It cost several 100 to move
Our 1st order we sold 12,000.00 not bad ROI eh?
We sold it until like 86 when i thought my son would wonder what the
heck his parents did .
well when he was older he said what?? you gave it away.. and cried...
and said " I couldd have made Robocop costume of that !!

[MOPO] question regarding rarity

2009-07-01 Thread Walton, Jeffrey
Here is a poster

offered on ebay

Now I thought it was a rather large anomaly that one sold at heritage
for over 4 grand, then the next auction (may 9) they had one sell for
over $1000

Yet here is the same poster (of which I have had two pass through my
hands and still have one) listed for a ton.

Now I ask you thisis this another case in..."hey this poster sold
for a load at auctionso mine must be worth the same." And now
every time this poster is offered for sale it will be at this new
inflated price because someone once forked over this ridiculous amount
(IMO).

I've been collecting for over 20 years...my forte is sci-fi...and I've
seen this poster many times in the past 20 years...so in my opinion it
is really shouldn't demand the same price as some of the higher-end
posters in this genre. I don't even think it should have brought a
grand at the last auction but again someone probably thought they were
getting a bargain when compared to the auction results before that.

Re: [MOPO] question regarding rarity

2009-07-01 Thread Bruce Hershenson
One thing to remember Jeff, is that you never see cancelled checks after
auctions end, to prove the sale actually took place, and that it was at the
reported price, or that no trade was involved, or that the "buyer" didn't
take a year to pay (if they ever paid at all).

Many times over the past 40 years I have seen items "sold" for HUGE prices,
and later learned that the buyer never paid. When the item goes back to
auction, the new buyer THINKS they got a "great deal" because they ONLY paid
a quarter of what the previous "buyer" paid, when it often was the case that
NO ONE ever paid that price.

Also, many auctions over the years have been caught red-handed posting
sky-high "results" that never happened. Since they don't pay any commissions
to anyone if it is their own poster, it is only their personal integrity
that prevents them from reporting false results.

The owner of the world's largest sports memorabilia auction was ARRESTED a
few months ago by the FBI and charged with numerous offenses, including
selling false autographs, doctoring cards, etc, and that auction house was
shut down.

Don't always believe what is "reported" and take everything you read with
several HUGE grains of salt.

If this "X" half sheet sells for $3500, I'll eat my "Screaming Skull"
one sheet on You Tube.
I've seen this happen a few times since I got back into the hobby in the
early to mid Nineties. "Invasion of the Saucer Men" sold for huge dough
at some auction, and all subsequent examples of this title have been
selling for a king's ransom ever since. Ditto with "Attack of the
50-Foot Woman" and "Wasp Woman". While this AIP piece is indeed
beautiful, I just don't see the long-term break-the-bank effect
happening on this one. There's a LOT of copies of this poster floating
around out there, especially the one sheets. Plus, it's not quite
kitschy enough to really have that extra-special B-movie mojo, in the
opinion of this aficionado of le cinema de crappe..

Greg Douglass
PS-Of course, if I'm wrong, I'll be kicking myself for selling my one
sheet on this title for a couple of hundred bucks a few years back.

[MOPO] Ebay Prices

2009-07-01 Thread Alan Adler

Howdy -

My friend Claude mentioned me again so I feel compelled to give my
thoughts on Ebay and pricing in this stream -

I feel like a lot of buyers are jaded these days -
They want good stuff - they value what they have - but they want to
buy too cheap - always with the eye of a quick flip - not so much with
an eye to the long run.
If many of these folks (not everybody / so limit the cards and
letters) were selling they would ask what they themselves might label
"high" prices if in someone else's auction or ad.
It's human nature to MANY AND NOT ALL to value what you have and
downgrade what you don't have.

When I first started selling posters I peddled mint Psycho inserts for
$10 and Beast From 20,000 Fathoms Half Sheets for $25.

People said my prices were high - that the stuff was just trash.
So, I stopped listening and began to price a poster at what my
instincts tell me it is worth at the time - perhaps even leading the
market price if it is rarer than I think folks believe it to be.
I currently see crudely printed / low print run early adult material
in this way.

I compare comps - but you can't always trust them - high or low.
Sometimes if a poster goes for a lot at a big auction -
I take that into consideration - maybe somebody knows something i don't.
I follow up with a high price and just drop it if no one agrees with
the big sales.

But in general I start my prices at the high end rather than the low
end because I don't want to throw anything away -

Just because it is on Ebay doesn't mean you have to start it low -
I price an item at what I think is right and lower it to a point if I
am wrong - most always offering a BIN for those who want to close on
the item sooner rather than later.
But maybe I value some of this stuff more than most people - I
wouldn't have taken thousands of posters out of the trash if I hadn't
seen the beauty in them.
I've loved these images all my life and when i sell, it is with
knowledge that this old friend will not be coming my way again.

The hard nosed may call it sentimentality - I call it provenance.

Condition - once again folks seem a bit jaded.
If a great poster has a sales comp at VG and mine is Mint -
I am going to ask more - And not just because better grade comics sell
for more than lesser grade comics.

Someday, after we are all long-gone -
Condition will mean a bit more than I feel it does now to our art form -
or perhaps it does mean a lot but people feel they have the right to
buy Mint at VG prices as long as there is a comp to back it up.

In the end - for me - condition does count.

Regarding Ebay - I believe there is still great stuff on Ebay -
It is still a very viable marketplace.
I make my living there.
I have sold great stuff for less than I wish I had - who hasn't?
I see stuff selling for great prices there and wonder if some folks
might be too blinded by prejudice to buy something cheap on Ebay.

But I am selling and will be selling more gold from my private
collection of over 50 years on Ebay and off-Ebay.

I am not a big horn tooter - maybe just a little one.
But the condition on a great deal of my material is extraordinary -
Its one owner stuff - driven only to church on Sundays!
Out of poster storage buildings into my hands and kept carefully for
decades.

I list my ads and my titles and prices stand for themselves.
But the proof is in the pudding -
The folks that buy from me are happy.
I've got over 6,000 positive transactions -
and with the luck of the poster gods have never gotten a negative.
That speaks for the integrity of my pricing, grading and in the end,
the value of the purchase.

Sometimes I make mistakes - screw up on a grading or get something
wrong -

(Thanks all for bearing with my senior moments)
- but all who know me and have bought from me know that I stand behind
my material -

and always make good on the sale -
Customer Satisfaction is truly important to me.

All of this stuff is just paper after all -
Value added because more than one of us loves a poster's key art or
loved the movie when they saw it 51 years ago when we were 9 years old.

Art is a viable market, but it is truly in the eyes of the beholder.
Choose right and you can sell for more in the future.
But choose what you love and pay what you are comfortable with and you
will be happy forever.

Now to business -

I've been selling material for over 35 years now -
And have finally gotten to the rarest of the rare in my collection.
And I will be rolling out some super hot stuff in the time to come.

I've just listed some lobby cards from some super 1950's titles -

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
REVENGE OF THE CREATURE
RODAN
GODZILLA
ROBOT MONSTER

Take a look at my material -
I have larger sized paper on all those titles for sale -

But the best of my material is not cheap -
You may not be able to turn it in a week or sell it at Heritage in
three months.

But if you have some holes to fill in

Re: [MOPO] question regarding rarity

2009-07-01 Thread Smith, Grey - 1367
To answer the question of why the poster in question sold so well in Heritage's
auction, I suggest one look at the link below. Take into account that the item
did come from the personal collection of Sam Arkoff, the film's producer and
was in excellent condition. This was a one-time deal and came with a notarized
certificate of authenticity by Arkoff's son. This may very well have been the
reason it sold so well, IMHO.

I still read them both, but not religiously. These tired old eyes have
trouble with tiny print. Maybe they should do like The Comic Book Price Guide
did and come out with a "large-type" edition. Now THERE'S a sign of an aging

  Hi, Mopoers:

I've been reading the tributes to Sam Rubin and am truly sorry I never
got a chance to know him. Seems like he was a pioneer and an important mainstay
of the hobby, especially in the early days.

Things, of course, have changed a lot since the arrival of the Internet.
I know in other collecting areas, the result has been the almost complete
disappearance of periodicals dedicated to the hobby. At one time, these
magazines were a vital source of information, not to mention marketplaces in
and of themselves.

Alll this and the mentions of MCW and Classic Images got me wondering:
How many of you continue to read either one of these magazines and, if so, do
you read the hard copy or do you read it online? How many used to read them but
stopped?

I'd like to hear from the oldtimers but from newcomers, too. Have you
ever looked at them? For that matter, have you ever heard of them before?
(Probably not too many in this group who haven't, but you never know.)

Howdy -

My friend Claude mentioned me again so I feel compelled to give my
thoughts on Ebay and pricing in this stream -

I feel like a lot of buyers are jaded these days -
They want good stuff - they value what they have - but they want to buy
too cheap - always with the eye of a quick flip - not so much with an
eye to the long run.
If many of these folks (not everybody / so limit the cards and letters)
were selling they would ask what they themselves might label "high"
prices if in someone else's auction or ad.

So, I stopped listening and began to price a poster at what my instincts
tell me it is worth at the time - perhaps even leading the market price
if it is rarer than I think folks believe it to be.
I currently see crudely printed / low print run early adult material in

I compare comps - but you can't always trust them - high or low.
Sometimes if a poster goes for a lot at a big auction -

I follow up with a high price and just drop it if no one agrees with the
big sales.

But in general I start my prices at the high end rather than the low end

Just because it is on Ebay doesn't mean you have to start it low -
I price an item at what I think is right and lower it to a point if I am

I have sold great stuff for less than I wish I had - who hasn't?
I see stuff selling for great prices there and wonder if some folks

But I am selling and will be selling more gold from my private
collection of over 50 years on Ebay and off-Ebay.

I am not a big horn tooter - maybe just a little one.
But the condition on a great deal of my material is extraordinary -
Its one owner stuff - driven only to church on Sundays!
Out of poster storage buildings into my hands and kept carefully for
decades.

I was just wondering if the posters from "The Wiz" have escalated in value
or will they just stay at the same value they have always been?

Just curious.

Thank's!

Howdy -

My friend Claude mentioned me again so I feel compelled to give my
thoughts on Ebay and pricing in this stream -

I feel like a lot of buyers are jaded these days -
They want good stuff - they value what they have - but they want to
buy too cheap - always with the eye of a quick flip - not so much
with an eye to the long run.
If many of these folks (not everybody / so limit the cards and
letters) were selling they would ask what they themselves might
label "high" prices if in someone else's auction or ad.
It's human nature to MANY AND NOT ALL to value what you have and
downgrade what you don't have.

When I first started selling posters I peddled mint Psycho inserts
for $10 and Beast From 20,000 Fathoms Half Sheets for $25.

People said my prices were high - that the stuff was just trash.
So, I stopped listening and began to price a poster at what my
instincts tell me it is worth at the time - perhaps even leading
the market price if it is rarer than I think folks believe it to be.
I currently see crudely printed / low print run early adult
material in this way.

I compare comps - but you can't always trust them - high or low.
Sometimes if a poster goes for a lot at a big auction -
I take that into consideration - maybe somebody knows something i
don't.
I follow up with a high price and just drop it if no one agrees
with the big sales.

But in general I start my prices at the high end rather than the
low end because I don't want to throw anything away -

Just because it is on Ebay doesn't mean you have to start it low -
I price an item at what I think is right and lower it to a point if
I am wrong - most always offering a BIN for those who want to close
on the item sooner rather than later.
But maybe I value some of this stuff more than most people - I
wouldn't have taken thousands of posters out of the trash if I
hadn't seen the beauty in them.
I've loved these images all my life and when i sell, it is with
knowledge that this old friend will not be coming my way again.

The hard nosed may call it sentimentality - I call it provenance.

Condition - once again folks seem a bit jaded.
If a great poster has a sales comp at VG and mine is Mint -
I am going to ask more - And not just because better grade comics
sell for more than lesser grade comics.

Someday, after we are all long-gone -
Condition will mean a bit more than I feel it does now to our art
form -
or perhaps it does mean a lot but people feel they have the right
to buy Mint at VG prices as long as there is a comp to back it up.

Out of poster storage buildings into my hands and kept carefully
for decades.

I list my ads and my titles and prices stand for themselves.
But the proof is in the pudding -
The folks that buy from me are happy.
I've got over 6,000 positive transactions -
and with the luck of the poster gods have never gotten a negative.
That speaks for the integrity of my pricing, grading and in the
end, the value of the purchase.

Sometimes I make mistakes - screw up on a grading or get something
wrong -

(Thanks all for bearing with my senior moments)
- but all who know me and have bought from me know that I stand
behind my material -

and always make good on the sale -
Customer Satisfaction is truly important to me.

All of this stuff is just paper after all -
Value added because more than one of us loves a poster's key art or
loved the movie when they saw it 51 years ago when we were 9 years
old.

Art is a viable market, but it is truly in the eyes of the beholder.
Choose right and you can sell for more in the future.
But choose what you love and pay what you are comfortable with and
you will be happy forever.

Now to business -

I've bee

[MOPO] Happy trails to Joe Bowman...

2009-07-01 Thread Captain Bijou
Good friend and gunmaster, Joe Bowman, "The Straight Shooter", died in his
sleep, Monday, June 30.

Bowman was a guest at several Houstoncon fan conventions in the 1970s as well
as western film conventions through the years. He was also technical advisor on
several westerns, including LONESOME DOVE.

Click the below link to read the detailed story about Joe that appeared in

[MOPO] Pricing strategies and the consumer

2009-07-01 Thread Eric Melanson
I'v read with interest the ongoing discussions lately about pricing
posters and the perception of something being priced high or low and the
lack of reality on the part of buyers and sellers.

As a career marketer, I can tell you there are probably at least 30 to
40 different pricing methods or strategies that have been used to price
product, both new and old. Some work in some markets but not in others.
At the end of the day, the price is what the consumer is willing to pay
for something ( I think Kirby has reminded us of this several times).
In addition, in my view, to gain high or premium prices, the seller must
create the "value" in the mind of the consumer to command the price.

For example, I have a neighbor that is a whiz at yard sales and makes a
fortune. He advertises well, puts items in plastic bags with labels and
every item is priced. He claims that he gets higher prices for similar
items when he puts them in plastic, which gives the illusion of better
condition. Go figure.

Many consider the field of consumer behavior to be a solid behavioral
science. Trying to relate buying behavior to price and product is like
stock picking.

What always intrigued me as a marketer and still does is the channel
implication of ebay. With the advent of the Internet, it is hard to
imagine a larger and more diverse channel of commerce than the internet.
I'd give my eye teeth to find a distribution channel like this that is
24/7, international, works in different currencies and languages, offers
different payment methods, is searchable and offers some form of buyer
assurance and can handle just about any product and priced item.

My products are subject to regulation (ie FDA) so we can't and don't put
them on the Internet since they require a prescription or pharmacy
license.

Ebay and internet commerce have their limitations, but they have given
consumers unprecedented access to products, pricing and markets,
regardless of how flawed the product may be, how inappropriate the
pricing may be or the description may be.

I've had some conversations with collectors outside of the poster world.
I get the sense that there is a slow but deliberate movement back to
collectibles for investment purposes or as a hedge given the disastrous
stock and real estate markets. But I also get the sense that in many
collector markets, there is little rhyme or reason to what sells and
what does not.

Any thoughts?

KM cost me my AA tickets. Had 4 seats for 10 years, then he took over the
Academy and changed the ticket rules so more members and fewer schmucks like
me were able to attend.

(Can't blame him. It was the right thing to do, but poor me. Wah)

Subject: [MOPO] Ebay Prices

Howdy -

My friend Claude mentioned me again so I feel compelled to give my thoughts on
Ebay and pricing in this stream -

I feel like a lot of buyers are jaded these days -
They want good stuff - they value what they have - but they want to buy too
cheap - always with the eye of a quick flip - not so much with an eye to the
long run.
If many of these folks (not everybody / so limit the cards and letters) were
selling they would ask what they themselves might label "high" prices if in
someone else's auction or ad.
It's human nature to MANY AND NOT ALL to value what you have and downgrade what
you don't have.

When I first started selling posters I peddled mint Psycho inserts for $10 and
Beast From 20,000 Fathoms Half Sheets for $25.
People said my prices were high - that the stuff was just trash.
So, I stopped listening and began to price a poster at what my instincts tell
me it is worth at the time - perhaps even leading the market price if it is
rarer than I think folks believe it to be.
I currently see crudely printed / low print run early adult material in this
way.

I compare comps - but you can't always trust them - high or low.
Sometimes if a poster goes for a lot at a big auction -
I take that into consideration - maybe somebody knows something i don't.
I follow up with a high price and just drop it if no one agrees with the big
sales.

But in general I start my prices at the high end rather than the low end
because I don't want to throw anything away -
Just because it is on Ebay doesn't mean you have to start it low -
I price an item at what I think is right and lower it to a point if I am wrong
- most always offering a BIN for those who want to close on the item sooner
rather than later.
But maybe I value some of this stuff more than most people -  I wouldn't have
taken thousands of posters out of the trash if I hadn't seen the beauty in
them.
I've loved these images all my life and when i sell, it is with knowledge that
this old friend will not be coming my way again.
The hard nosed may call it sentimentality - I call it provenance.

Condition - once again folks seem a bit jaded.
If a great poster has a sales comp at VG and mine is Mint -
I am going to ask more - And not just because better grade comics sell for more
than lesser grade comics.
Someday, after we are all long-gone -
Condition will mean a bit more than I feel it does now to our art form -
or perhaps it does mean a lot but people feel they have the right to buy Mint
at VG prices as long as there is a comp to back it up.
In the end - for me - condition does count.

Regarding Ebay - I believe there is still great stuff on Ebay -
It is still a very viable marketplace.
I make my living there.
I have sold great stuff for less than I wish I had - who hasn't?
I see stuff selling for great prices there and wonder if some folks might be
too blinded by prejudice to buy something cheap on Ebay.

But I am selling and will be selling more gold from my private collection of
over 50 years on Ebay and off-Ebay.

I am not a big horn tooter - maybe just a little one.

But the condition on a great deal of my material is extraordinary -
Its one owner stuff - driven only to church on Sundays!
Out of poster storage buildings into my hands and kept carefully for decades.

I list my ads and my titles and prices stand for themselves.
But the proof is in the pudding -
The folks that buy from me are happy.
I've got over 6,000 positive transactions -
and with the luck of the poster gods have never gotten a negative.
That speaks for the integrity of my pricing, grading and in the end, the value
of the purchase.

Sometimes I make mistakes - screw up on a grading or get something wrong -
(Thanks all for bearing with my senior moments)
- but all who know me and have bought from me know that I stand behind my
material -
and always make good on the sale -
Customer Satisfaction is truly important to me.

Rich,

You think that is bad. Make a little suggestion to have The Chosen One appoint
a movie poster pricing Czar and see what happens.

You'll have death threats and even be called childish. On top of that my David
Letterman tickets got cancelled.

I really liked Karl Malden. He reminded me of a serious Jimmy Durante.

Re: [MOPO] Karl Malden, RIP at 97

2009-07-01 Thread David Kusumoto

** In April 1998, when Karl Malden was 86, my wife and I got a chance to meet
him and his daughter Carla at a screening of "On the Waterfront" at a theater
in La Jolla, north of San Diego. He was also there to promote his fabulous and
somewhat dishy memoir, "When Do I Start?" -- which had been released the year
before in hardcover -- (and as of this writing, is still gloriously in print in
paperback because it's that fantastic, esp. his impressions of the stars he
worked with -- which he felt OK writing about -- given the fact that even in
1998, he had already outlived most of 'em).

** In conjunction with his appearance, I loaned my LB one-sheet to "On the
Waterfront" to the film society group hosting his visit. It was displayed on
stage after the screening -- and also at an adjacent bookstore where he signed
copies of his books with his daughter, who wrote the text. He answered a ton
of questions from the huge audience that turned out -- esp. what it was like
working with Brando, Elia Kazan and Vivien Leigh. He said Kazan was a genius,
that Leigh was closer to Blanche DuBois in real life than Blanche herself, and
that Brando was the greatest actor he'd ever worked with. He spoke of Brando
with great sadness, calling him a man who had everything -- drop-dead looks,
talent and money -- but who became a corpulent, tragic figure who lost it all,
squandering his money and becoming increasingly eccentric, working in bad
projects after the Godfather, desperate to make money just to pay his bills.

** The entire night, Malden was sharp as a tack -- and had the command and
respect you'd expect as a president of AMPAS -- but who also had that
self-deprecating persona that made him endearing, esp. jokes about his lack of
matinee idol looks, his Broadway stage experience vs. his work on film -- and
his conviction that his years as a spokesman for American Express ("don't leave
home without it") made him more famous than all of his other work combined. In
fact, he joked that his obituaries would all mention his Oscar -- and predicted
ALL would also mention his work for American Express -- saying it would be the
"signature role for which he was better known to most of the public."

** The man we met that evening was gracious and accommodating to every fan
present. He represented the "old Hollywood," the type like Gregory Peck,
Charlton Heston and Tony Curtis out here in CA -- who have good manners and
loved to mix with fans. Malden loved the attention -- and I got the impression
he was ultra-surprised and ecstatic that a "supporting actor" could generate
such a large turnout. He and his daughter signed our book thus: "To Koose and
Yoe, best always from Carla Malden and Karl Malden." I took my "On the
Waterfront" poster off its easel and asked him to sign it. He did, just above
his name credit. I've mentioned this poster several times to the MoPo group --
in the context of certain signatures which add sentimental value -- but don't
add $$ value to vintage movie memorabilia. That poster is no longer in my
collection -- but I recall it fetched an OK price. But I kept his book,
personalized as it is. I view it similarly as my "Psycho" poster, whereby
Janet Leigh, during a visit in 2000, personalized her signature, "To David --
Psycho-tically yours, Janet Leigh." -d.

He had been married 70 years, and had one of the three longest Hollywood
marriages (can you name the other two, WITHOUT looking at Imdb?).

I feel really really sorry for his wife. Imagine spending 70 years with someone
almost every day and then waking up without them?

[MOPO] Squirrel (OT?)

2009-07-01 Thread Roger Kim
I've been waiting for something really important to happen in the
world so that CNN would stop showing Michael Jackson, at least
temporarily. It has apparently happened.

Here is more info on the squirrel story:

Police: Woman stashes squirrel in cleavage

WARREN, OH: Police interviewing a woman about a murder suspect got
quite a surprise when a squirrel popped out of her cleavage.

The woman, who was wearing a tank top, gently pushed him back in and
continued the 10 minute interview.

"No, I was not prepared to see a woodland creature in the interview
room, said Det. Wayne Mackey of the Warren Police Department.

"I just kept right on talking to her, listening to her. I really
didn't acknowledge at all. I really didn't know what to say."

  ** In April 1998, when
Karl Malden was 86, my wife and I got a chance to meet him and his
daughter Carla at a screening of "On the Waterfront" at a theater in La Jolla,
north of San Diego.  He was also there to promote his fabulous and somewhat
dishy memoir, "When Do I Start?" -- which had been released the year before
in hardcover -- (and as of this writing, is still gloriously in print in
paperback because it's that fantastic, esp. his impressions of the stars
he worked with -- which he felt OK writing about -- given the fact that even
in 1998, he had already outlived most of 'em).

** In conjunction with his appearance, I loaned my LB one-sheet
to "On the Waterfront" to the film society group hosting his visit.
It was displayed on stage after the screening -- and also at an adjacent
bookstore where he signed copies of his books with his daughter, who wrote
the text.  He answered a ton of questions from the huge audience that turned
out -- esp. what it was like working with Brando, Elia Kazan and Vivien Leigh.  He
said Kazan was a genius, that Leigh was closer to Blanche DuBois in real
life than Blanche herself, and that Brando was the greatest actor he'd ever
worked with.  He spoke of Brando with great sadness, calling him a man who
had everything -- drop-dead looks, talent and money -- but who became a corpulent,
tragic figure who lost it all, squandering his money and becoming increasingly
eccentric, working in bad projects after the Godfather, desperate to make
money just to pay his bills.

** The entire night, Malden was sharp as a tack -- and had the
command and respect you'd expect as a president of AMPAS -- but
who also had that self-deprecating persona that made him endearing, esp. jokes
about his lack of matinee idol looks, his Broadway stage experience vs. his
work on film -- and his conviction that his years as a spokesman for American
Express ("don't leave home without it") made him more famous than all of
his other work combined.  In fact, he joked that his obituaries would all
mention his Oscar -- and predicted ALL would also mention his work for American
Express -- saying it would be the "signature role for which he was better
known to most of the public."

** The man we met that evening was gracious and accommodating to
every fan present.  He represented the "old Hollywood," the type
like Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston and Tony Curtis out here in CA -- who
have good manners and loved to mix with fans.  Malden loved the attention
-- and I got the impression he was ultra-surprised and ecstatic that a "supporting
actor" could generate such a large turnout.  He and his daughter signed our
book thus:  "To Koose and Yoe, best always from Carla Malden and Karl Malden."
I took my "On the Waterfront" poster off its easel and asked him to sign
it.  He did, just above his name credit.  I've mentioned this poster several
times to the MoPo group -- in the context of certain signatures which add
sentimental value -- but don't add $$ value to vintage movie memorabilia.
That poster is no longer in my collection -- but I recall it fetched an OK
price.  But I kept his book, personalized as it is.  I view it similarly
as my "Psycho" poster, whereby Janet Leigh, during a visit in 2000, personalized
her signature, "To David -- Psycho-tically yours, Janet Leigh."  -d.

He had been married 70 years, and had one of the three longest Hollywood
marriages (can you name the other two, WITHOUT looking at Imdb?).

I feel really really sorry for his wife. Imagine spending 70 years
with someone almost every day and then waking up without them?

Re: [MOPO] Karl Malden, RIP at 97

2009-07-01 Thread David Kusumoto

** Thanks Joe! That's a great story about Malden; I never knew about that
tidbit you wrote below, e.g., how he slipped in references to his birth name in
his own pictures. I saw the picture you mentioned, Baby Doll, again last year
and man oh man, that's still a HOT one. Made zero money because it was
"condemned," but what stands out is its timelessness. That horny Eli Wallach.
That repressed Karl Malden. And geez, that jail bait Carroll Baker; I like the
fact that Baker acknowledges she now LOVES IT when people call her "Baby Doll."
(Apparently she didn't like it when she was younger.)

** And thanks to everyone who wrote me publicly or mostly privately about
crossing paths with that ultra-gentleman, Karl Malden. I appreciate it very
much! It's not often a person like myself can come even close to matching the
stories told by other members at MoPo who've crossed paths with bigger stars in
New York or Hollywood. The only upside to San Diego is its climate (it's
better than L.A.'s because we're on a harbor, not a basin) -- and the fact that
many glitterati choose to retire here because its quiet. But we still have to
drive three hours to L.A. to see stars in person -- that is, when they're
still, as they say, "ambulatory" and in their prime.

** I was obviously impressed with Malden. Oh, I know he'll never be considered
a "legend," but he was so total class off-screen -- and made many movies better
-- by just being on-screen. As I wrote to a fellow MoPoer, he had a stature
about him, almost regal in his old age -- that one would never think of when
you saw him playing the "everyman" in his pictures. He was just a consistently
great character actor. That he lived large -- and lived to be 97 -- I'm sure
his family is satisifed with that. He outlived them all. Best, -d.

Wonderful story, David! I'm totally envious. The great Karl Malden is one of
the actors I would have loved to meet.

Just yesterday I remarked to a friend that there was only one film of a
Tennessee Williams play (first filming) that still was represented by the three
surviving leads--- "Baby Doll." Now that statistic is gone forever!

Caroll Baker is still with us at about 78 and the indestructable Eli Wallach--
95-- is still giving readings with his wife of about 60 years, Anne Jackson.
He also still does films and tv occasionally. The last two things I remember
were a cameo in "Mystic River" at the request of director Clint Eastwood and a
wonderful turn on that excellent but short-lived tv series that was a backstage
view of a "SNL"-type show a couple of seasons back.

When the term, "They don't make 'em like that anymore," is heard, the reference
is to actors like these.

Jeremy Piven--- eat your heart out!

PS-- Malden always regreted having to change his real name (Mladen Sekulovich)
for a sho-biz career. As he became more known he enjoyed inserting his name
into scripts. The next time you watch "Patton," note when "General Bradley"
turns to an officer and orders, "Sekulovich, take this .." But my favorite
one is: Malden is the prison warden in "Birdman of Alkatraz." He takes a
reporter on to see Stroud (Lancaster) and, passing each cell, indicates the
prisoner within"JonesSmith...Sekulovich."
