 Shelly,
May I suggest that you purchase my new self-help book, Hey, You Little

Full-blown, cranky, cursing curmudgeon is actually a quote about me
from the foreword of the book, written by my pal Justin Bieber, who is
coincidentally one of the primary reasons I am a hopelessly bitter old

  Dave,

Get the most out of right now and never fail to enjoy as much of it as
you can, because you are currently living through what will inevitably
become your own good old days that you will be moaning about decades
from now. Trust me on this... :)

  Dave Rosen wrote:

You're right, Peter, part of it is getting the word out. No
offense to some on this forum, but many poster dealers are of a
certain generation who are set in their ways and have a certain
way of doing business that almost guarantees diminishing returns.
Much as I respect them, many learned the business in the 1970s and
many have been selling the same way to (in many cases) the same
  people for decades.

That's fine, but, well, the hard truth is people get older, get
sick and die. So if that's the way you run your business, sadly,
your client base is definitely shrinking.

Meanwhile, there is a small but, I maintain, a significant and
potentially robust new market that many dealers are not even aware
of because they do not run in those circles.

Many of the people I deal with are young artists, musicians,
designers, decorators and even tattoo artists. All these clients
have a fascination with graphic design and pop culture that goes
back to the 1930s. As they mature and their tastes develop they
will become more sophisticated collectors (though many already
  have very sophisticated tastes).

This is an exciting prospect for a dealer like myself who has
confidence that there is a future to the hobby, thanks to these
savvy clients. But, hey, I'm just one of the new guys so maybe
that's why I think that way. I don't have the good old days to
  moan about.

Just out of curiosity, which of the top two, (which are half sheets),
coincides with the title card?

My illusions about the top Universal collectors are now shattered.
I had an idealised image of an all-knowing exclusive circle, (probably
gathering during full moons to invoke otherworldly collecting powers)
who knew exactly who had all the existent top paper.

Disappointingly, they appear to be as human as the rest of us.

The image on the top right is the Title Card.

I have the Title Card and three of the scene cards plus a number of posters.
It's the most illusive of all the Universal Horror titles as far as lobby cards
are concerned and are much more rare than Frankenstein, Dracula and Bride of
Frankenstein lobby cards.

At one time I had the same curiousity as Jim and was actually able to figure
out what the eighth card was. But that was a very very long time ago and now
my 80+ year old brain can't seem to remember.

Just out of curiosity, which of the top two, (which are half sheets), coincides
with the title card?

My illusions about the top Universal collectors are now shattered.
I had an idealised image of an all-knowing exclusive circle, (probably
gathering during full moons to invoke otherworldly collecting powers) who knew
exactly who had all the existent top paper.
Disappointingly, they appear to be as human as the rest of us.

If there is a way to put online photos of the 7 cards together so that I (and
others) could see them as a group, that might trigger a memory of the missing
scene. Worth a shot.

HI Richard. The title card is on the Top right and the Style B 1/2 is the
blue one on the left.

Well there isn't much that Todd Ron B doesn't know. Maybe after he see's
the picture, Todd may even remember. This is just one of those puzzling
things. I am hoping that someone will recognize a card that is missing. We
are pretty close now. Closer then when I originally wrote *Children of the

Re: [MOPO] Slabbing Question

2010-07-23 Thread Michael Spampinato
Hi John,

I agree and don't like the definitions at all.

To me Vintage is not really a definition of the technique used to derive the
image but simply more a designation of age or almost of provenance. I would
certainly consider, for example, a 1940's photograph released by Universal for
one of their 1930's horror film re-releases to still be a Vintage photograph.
I also see a difference between a studio re-released photograph and one made
from the original negative by an individual in their darkroom, for example.
But
it sounds like either would be glommed under ORIGINAL.

And I don't get Contemporary at all. Again, it does not go to the technique
used to derive the image. It sounds, by their definition, that it would be a
photograph OF a photgraph. And from that negatvie successive prints were made.
To me that is a reproduction and nothing more. I would consider an old original
negative being printed today to be a CONTEMPORARY print.

They list the definitions here on the net:

http://www.cgccomics.com/Vintage.asp

VINTAGE - A photograph printed from the original negative at or near the time
that the photograph was taken.
ORIGINAL - A photograph printed from the original negative.
CONTEMPORARY - A photograph derived by photographic processes from an original
image.

Hi Pov
I asked the question about the difference in definition between Vintage and
Original after I had ordered a bunch of slabbed stills so that I could have a
look at them first hand. The definition of Vintage is listed in the guarantee
on the back of the card:

A vintage photograph is considered authentic if it was printed from the
original negative on or near the time that the photograph was taken.

That's fine but there was no definition of original on the website to compare
Vintage to Original so thats why I was curious. From your email and
according to CGC, it is better to have a Vintage still than an Original
still. This might confuse many collectors who attach a different meaning to the
word original.

According to CGC a still can only fall into three categories. However, Bruce
currently has a load of stills on auction and he is obviously an acknowledged
and well respected expert in grading stills probably with many more years of
experience than CGC. He is referring to many of the stills in his auction as
Vintage Original which seems quite a reasonable description for many of the
stills he has. However, if you go by CGC categories that is a contradiction in
terms as they say that an original is a lesser still than a vintage still.

No wonder collectors get confused with different description levels from
different dealers and, now, authentication services. And this doesnt even
consider the grading levels with the various interpretations of fine etc.

The stills I received all look quite good in their slabs but they were all
quite low value items and the cost of getting them appraised and slabbed would
have been far more than the items actually sold for. That indicates that an
effort is being made to get slabbed lobby cards and stills out into the market
so that they will be come an accepted form of authentication.

I know that many people collect stills so hopefully all of this discussion will
be of interest to them.

Regards
John

I just got off the phone with CGC and asked them several questions about
slabbing lobby cards, which they were quite happy to answer.

 The Plastic Case Itself
First, the case is nothing like a baseball card's or comic book's thick,
hard
 case.
It is essentially encapsulation. The lobby card is sealed between two sheets
of
archival Barex plastic. It is not laminated and is free within the sealed
Barex.
The plastic sheets are about 10-12mil thick each and fairly stiff. They
measure
 12.5 x 16.

There is a 3 hole punch on the top end if you want to put them in a binder. On
the right short end is the label itself. They can be framed as is and will fit
fine behind a matte board in a frame.
The card can be removed by cutting the case open.

 The Label
The label contains the following info:
 Grade
 Title
 Date
 Studio
Distributor number (such as the NGC 54-127 for example)
 Major performers
In the case of a re-release, that is notated and the date is listed as R-19XX,

Other notations may include some factual

The problem now will be that they won't be able to change their grading
levels because they have already graded thousands of stills in the current
categories. If they changed the gradings now that would upset many of the
people who have purchased stills with the old gradings.

Looking at the definitions - ORIGINAL - A photograph printed from the
original negative. I guess that means that the photograph could have been
printed yesterday whereas a Vintage photograph was printed from the original
negative at the time the photo was taken. They appear to be saying that the
top end of the scale is Vintage with Original as a second best.

Is this the norm nowadays? Is it a function of whatever MOPO is using as a
server? Fingers of the Interent Cabal? It is kind of unsettling.
