[MOPO] Insurance to England?

2012-01-30 Thread Alan Adler
Dear Mopos -

Maybe I missed a posting about this -

But I have tried to ship 2 parcels to England via Priority and they are not
currently allowing insurance to be purchased.

One pkg was over $200 last week and the other was $100 today - so it was not a
24-hour virus in the system or anything like that.

Anyone have the latest info on this issue?

Thanks -

I've certainly bought insurance for international priority through USPS but
I have had a need for this recently. I've been using Stamps.com and I've
definitely purchased insurance there for Priority International and for
regular Air Mail International packages. FRANC

[MOPO] Question for dealers

2012-01-30 Thread JOHN REID Vintage Movie Memorabilia
Hi to you all
I have recently started scanning lobby cards instead of photographing them. I
notice that many dealers including the major dealers still photograph lobby
cards to add to their websites. Just curious as to whether anyone sees any
problems with scanning lobby cards rather than photographing them.

Re: [MOPO] Question for dealers

2012-01-30 Thread Richard Auras
I think so many photograph because the scanners that handle oversize items like
lobby cards can be pretty costly.  I myself have always used a scanner because
it is a lot easier to get true color realistic images of the item.  I myself am
needing to pick up another scanner that handles large items and there is only
one that is available at a somewhat reasonable price (around $250).  All others
run $500 to $1500.  I think that is why so many still do their images using
cameras.  Just my 2 cents. Rick  www.ilovefilms.com

Re: [MOPO] Question for dealers

2012-01-30 Thread JOHN REID Vintage Movie Memorabilia
I am finding that the scans work pretty well although the scans don't show up
flaws like pinholes, etc as well as photographs. It looks as though Bruce
doesnt use a scanner. I would be interested to see his and other opinions on
whether the process is faster by photographing lobby cards.

I think so many photograph because the scanners that handle oversize items
like lobby cards can be pretty costly. I myself have always used a scanner
because it is a lot easier to get true color realistic images of the item. I
myself am needing to pick up another scanner that handles large items and there
is only one that is available at a somewhat reasonable price (around $250).
All others run $500 to $1500. I think that is why so many still do their
images using cameras. Just my 2 cents. Rick www.ilovefilms.com

  Hi to you all
I have recently started scanning lobby cards instead of photographing them. I
notice that many dealers including the major dealers still photograph lobby
cards to add to their websites. Just curious as to whether anyone sees any
problems with scanning lobby cards rather than photographing them.
  Regards
  John

Re: [MOPO] Question for dealers

2012-01-30 Thread Richard Halegua Posters + Comic Art

it's all about what equipment you use and what you're doing with it
I have hi-res scanning equipment and I have a hi-res camera
depending on what final usage you have either one can have it's
advantages, one of them being that shooting photos with a
high-quality digital camera takes much less time than scanning equipment

the Canon DC-10 I have is almost as good as my scanners and if I had
a Canon with a CMOS element rather than CCD element, the quality
would be absolutely perfect. I believe that is the type of camera
Heritage photographers would be using (CMOS) as for print media you
need that quality. the Canon EOS 60D at 18mp CMOS and just $999 is a
perfect tool for the average user wanting print-quality results at
the lowest price. As you move up to the more expensive models, you
get to the sports photography level where you can blow up an image to
an 8 foot sign with no loss in picture quality and with super-high speed

you start talking about $15,000 and more expensive cameras and
they'll be as good in quality as any Linotype-Hell drum scanner

I might also mention - a scanner does smooth out the image. you
don't see creases and the like as well as you do with a good camera
and that's because a scanner doesn't examine the paper but rather the
color and the image is 2 dimensional, while a camera sees depth

you can fix that with just a few adjustments in your scanning preferences
