OK, one of the things I have noticed in this duscussion is that people talk about the cutbacks in newsroom staff (reporters, cartoonists, proofreaders). While this is true, the impact is much larger (100%) on the production and distribution staff. I feel for the typesetters, printers, circulation, truck drivers and even the lowly kid who proudly delivers the paper to your hedge or roof. The writers will find work. Jay, you're right about the disappearance of print editions having a greater impact outside the newsroom. That said, I'm not so sure the writers WILL find work, at least work that involves writing. The trend now, at least with online outlets (eg, the Huffington Post, the most notorious example), is to pay writers NOTHING. That's right, you're expected to work solely for the exposure, even if you're in your 50s and have decades of experience and accomplishments behind you. Newsroom or not, the people in the business who will get hurt the most are those who do not have enough years in to qualify for buyouts and pensions. The market is already flooded with qualified but unemployed journalists (not just from print but from broadcasting, too). Meanwhile j-schools are still turning out a fresh crop of journalists every year! Where will THEY work? I disagree with live auctions being 18th century technologyso are you going to be shipping complete dinning room sets and combine harvesters? This is nothing like going to a live auction bidding against other bidders and hauling off your prey right after you snatched it. Sure it makes sense to place specialized auctions on line i.e. coins and movie posters but there are tons of auctions everyday that people travel to in order to stock up on their antiques for their stores and suchthey are not going to be paying shipping on the chest of drawers that's for sure From: MoPo List [mailto:mopo-l@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU] On Behalf Of Bruce Hershenson Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2012 5:54 PM To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Subject: Re: [MOPO] R.I.P. While this is true, the impact is much larger (100%) on the production and distribution staff. I feel for the typesetters, printers, circulation, truck drivers and even the lowly kid who proudly delivers the paper to your hedge or roof. The writers will find work.
