anal retentiveness and jazz , now that's quite a large subject ,
jazz in itself is very very often a tinly little box where everyone
plays like most did before them calling themselves jazz musicians
too , the only times that i feel free when making music is here when
i'm in africa with young musicians who have not as yet fallen into
the rules trap . I prefer most music that can not get any label nor
box as it's pretty much unlike anything you've heard before ...

I dont think proper spelling would help that article a bit..
It has no facts and leaves out the basics like who the people are.
I would prefer Typos with a good story over a lame lackluster
 story
  with no details...
If more people payed attention to communication over anal
retentiveness on useless perfections we may get somewhere..
I think thats why I like Jazz is because the artist break the
common accepted rules and dance out of the Box... on the box edge
 and
around the box... but thats just me perhaps.

Re: [MOPO] A question for you 18 yr olds....

2013-02-25 Thread Tom Martin
In 1976 I was a booking agent and I decorated my office in a
Hollywood theme. so I had about 6 framed movie posters of Classic
films like- Black cat, The littlest Colrnel, GWTW, War of the
worlds,King KONG,and another one.. cant remember.. also had stills of
stars, my waiting room chairs where director chairs and I had movie
reels, Old likes and proctors and other memorabilia laying around the
office... A friend brought in 1920s photoplay movie magazines and
after meeting some die hard collectors that had press books, real one
sheets, inserts and all,,I started selling in Film collectosrs world
and big reel and classic images and other collector papers.. those
original 6 posters where reproductionPortal posters but back then
they printed them on very flat paper stock so they looked good.. also
they where like 24 x 36 I think so they where smaller then a 1
sheet.. and they looked great in a office setting..I also had framed
letters from agents and people I was dealing with like Eileen Ford
and Wilhelmina model agencys,, My union Agent license from NYC Lew
Mancini.. and various other documents to make my agency look
professional.. I was what like 20...??? lol hahaha
this years OSCARS.. I thought the sets where good and it was
ok,,, I would like to see more tributes to industry people that have
been around like older actors and actresses.. as there is so much
empahsis on the youth... Howevere Its ok as they are the ones
working.. It was nice seeing Christopher Plummer, and a few
others..But if you think much of the industry has become CGI
instead of acting anyways.. or animation in CGI.. for the vintage
peopell now seem to be 70-80s like Travolta and the like.
Howevere the brightsode is I think the youger people are also getting
nostalgic and want to see some of the older classic peopel due to the
fact they can see iton netflix.. so perhaps ther will be a
resurgence of older actors used like before... character actors to me
always gave the films depth..

Congrats and thanks.

Think it was a Taxi Driver quad and an Apocalypse Now! locandina, from the
Vintage Magazine Company in Soho.

Didn't realise until over 10 years later, alerted by a sale at Christies, that
there was a whole hidden world out there for serious collecting.
Kicked things off proper with an On The Waterfront 1-sht, former property of
Mel Torme.
Long gone.

I'm thinking more jazz/psychedelia/acid rock.
Like Peter Green's End Of The Game.
Personal favourite, though many do find it unlistenable.
Final thing he did before they wiped out his circuits with the ECT, and he came
back more normal.

Wow Tom. Sounds like your offices were so cool.

I think there are so many new fun actors. Jennifer Lawrence is a fine young
actress and Daniel Radcliffe is so versatile. Bradley Cooper is wonderful in
SILVER LININGS

With HD digital cameras wrinkles etc are more pronounced and expressions more
magnified. It's tough.

stars, my waiting room chairs where director chairs and I had movie
reels, Old likes and proctors and other memorabilia laying around the

Re: [MOPO] A question for you 18 yr olds....

2013-02-25 Thread Tom Martin

Hi Toochis... well you are probably right... I know many of the
acctreeses and actors are physically pleasing and film well... But I
still think that theones in pastlike I nticed Rita Hayworth... and
say Bogart.. they just pop from the screen in a way the new peopel
dont I mean they had sucj personalitys of screen presence...
and they seemed truly like stars as they where special and unique
like characters of themselve... so I think of say.. a marilyn or a
james dean or Errol Flyn and John Wayne and I dont see anyone like
that But maybe Harrison Ford... yet even harrison... or Tom Hanks
some of my faves done come close To Jimmy stewart.. I mean Spencer
Tracy and hepburn.. Or Lucy... orgarland... just had a trademark
identity..

I feel bad with the younger actors as some are brilliant as far as
crafy and all.. But no one has the Charisma of say Bette Davis Or
Crawford or really that whol stable of actors from MGM...

Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly and Donald Oconnor... in singing in
the rain... its a Movie , its a event and its so vibrant in all the
elements of design, conematigraphy and all..

I love all the new technology and Cgi and gimmicks they are realy
cost effective and very visual... But the issue I have is similar to
what I told a friend that shoots models portfolios... this woman he
sot was perfect and beautiful in all ways of human anatomy...
he said what do you think... I saod the shot is great.. the woman is
great... BUT,,, it lacks a soul.. her eyes where empty and she didnt
havea story,,, nothing spoke to me... Pure vacant and
uninspired...meaningless. what I see in the peopel thathave
delighted us in movies is depth, passion..and a story that eclipses
anything we can bottle or manufacture... Its the IT and the wow, and
the sincerity that pushes our buttons thats really undefinable but
yet felt so powerful when we experience it from a genuine star...
when I see it or hear it or feel it... I know it... last time I felt
it was Micael Jackson.. and before that the beatles..I would say it
kinda stopped after the 60s...exceppt people like Mcqueen, eastwood,
a few otheres, most dwindled in popularity and interest escept the
heayweights that caried on after even death..
technically its at a alltime great with digutal... But the stories
dont seem to have staying power..and it shows in poster sales as how
many contemporay posters still sell afte just 10 years,,, yet a film
like star wars keeps on selling because it touched People in a almosy
biblical way same with back to the future. and many 80s films
that had great storie..///
Howevere Perhaps if I went to a new recent movie i could be changed
:::) I want to see lincoln and Argo... this new OZ film looks
visually interesting from the trailers... But Films like Cinema
Paradiso engulf me into the film and I forget that im in the theater
and get meshed in the film... saving private Ryan did that, Forest
Gump so there are some decent films...

Tell me what ones to see Toochis and ill check them Out...You are
probably right and maye there arefilms that i should see and give the
new kids a better chance A old dog can be taught new
tricks...:) thanks so much for the input Toochis. I respect your
opinion/ the lines and hard contrast seem to be the current
style... In old films they used lost of soft focus and I believe the
lens where better and film captured ligh better and the lights of
hot lights created movie magic... its just expensive to shoot like
they did,,, and the Germans made the best glass from the black forest
pre-ww2 but the factory was destroyed.. schneider and other german
optics are simply magic and creat beautiful film...there was a book
written on it and a video that had all the great cinematographers
published by the ASC. years agothat explained it well. also the
light on her face is a classic those early cinematographers where
magicians... IMHOLOL I had a pic of my office if i can find it
ill send it,,, I looked good but didnt have a clue what I wasdoing...
kinda like now...:) at least im consistant

see what I meean... Bogart as cool as it gets... acting in a
expression without even words..
and les also remember Ju=ohn Huston john Ford, Demille, Stevens..
they knew how to cature the inner souls of actors onto celluloid...
and all the crew did also.. like the edith heads and editors and the
musical scores of Krngold one and on... the westmores... it was a
meeting of the minds or many artists... It could still happen if
peopel brought that passion back...maybe its there and i havent
looked hard enough.. but what i keep seeing is sub woofer booms
staged chase scens, explosions and loud chase scenes/.
Romance and love sceenes seem tabboo sincere inspiration makes
people Puke.. its like the entire hero element is twisted in
reverse... as everything thinks that those tenents are Bullshit and
dont exsist... so they see hate and violence as the solution..

then they wonder why thats what the kids emulate funny eh??

Just like taxing toyota buyers becaus ethe cars get better gas milage
and use less gass.. and are green.. so now pay more tax... shouldnt
they get a rewrd and incentives to drive gas friendly vehicles???
I think so... but im not currently hip...LOL

first poster I ever bought (that I can recall) was a Beast From
20,000 Fathoms 1sh along with a Thing From Another World 1sh back
in
1968 at the NY Comicon. Later that day I bought a DTESS pressbook.
sadly, though I made a profit, I didn't own any of these items for
a full
day as I sold them all and bought other stuff the same day, that I
sold and
made more money on before the weekend was out

In honor of MOPO's birthday, I ask a question: what was the very
first
 movie poster that you obtained?

For me, it was the very rare insert for the James Stewart classic
film
Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation. I bought this treasure from none
other
than Bruce Carteron at the Denver poster store Cinegraphics.
Which
if you are keeping score, was (sad to say it
closed) next door to Chipotle #1. If you want see a picture of
the
store, visit your local Chipotle and look at the pictures on the
wall,
its in the background (preserved for eternity).

Time flies when you’re having fun…MoPo turns 18 today!

On February 24, 1995 the first MoPo post was distributed via American
University’s listserv. I’m truly amazed (and very thankful) that American U
keeps their listserv up and running, after all, listservs are SO last century!
It may be a dinosaur, but it still serves us well.

In keeping with my annual tradition, I’d like to recognize the 11 original
MoPo’ers:

Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan
Zweifel, George Nichol, Cynthia Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, myself (your
humble listowner) and AOL’er Static555 (real name is Jeff Static). I finally
stumbled upon his true identity. Michael, Rob and Evan are still members.

Thanks to everyone for helping MoPo reach this milestone.

Just for fun, here’s the first public announcement about “the MoPo,” posted to
the newsgroup rec.arts.movies (remember Usenet?):

Mar 2 1995, 1:14 am

Now Showing: The MoPo List!

The MoPo (short for Movie Poster) is a new mailing list for collectors of movie
memorabilia. If you're into one-sheets, lobby cards, stills, inserts, or any
movie collectible, then join us on the MoPo!

To subscribe send e-mail to:

    lists...@listserv.american.edu

In the BODY of your message type:

SUBSCRIBE MOPO-L your name (without the quotation marks)

This is a brand new list, created by a small group of avid collectors.

2013-02-25 Thread Jay Nemeth-Johannes
Congratulations on 18, Scott.

I was there on that first day, but reading over Cindy¹s shoulder. I always
let her be the public front and tried to keep my (loud) mouth to myself.
