Re: [MOPO] Mounted on wood!

2022-05-05 Thread Douglas B Taylor
Alan,

I bought an All Quiet on the Western Front OS in 2003 that was owned (I
believe) by a dealer or collector on this board. The original OS was mounted
on a board and covered in shellack.

Before purchasing, I sent it to Studio C to test whether there were solvents
that could remove the shellack without destroying the paper, and also solvents
that could remove the glue holding it to the board, without destroying the
paper. Studio C was able to find a way to do both. I finalized the purchase
and Studio C completed the process. It cost me about $2,000 (in this case and
in 2003). The poster looks fabulous and is now on linen. The only telltale
sign of its' "former life" is that the paper absorbed just a bit of the
shellack which made it slightly stiffer than a normal poster. To the average
fan this would probably not be noticeable, but a seasoned collector might feel
the difference.

I'm not sure where you might go for service now, as it's been almost 20 years
since Studio C did mine, but I can assure you that it can be done.

Hope this helps.

Doug

Looks like a handful of serious serial one sheets are headed my way. Each one
is white border trimmed and mounted solidly on wood. The kicker is they've been
varnished. Very old school collection long In storage. Yipes!

Who in LA would have the skill to remove these beauties and restore them? Did
the varnish kill them? Should I just try and sell as-is?

Thanks folks for any ideas on saving these treasures.

Her life and her being signed at Warner Bros. reminds me of how - in

I agree. "La La Land" is likely to win the big prize, and it was impressive
when I saw it on the Cinerama Dome last month - but none of its original tunes
have "classic" written all over 'em, such as you'd find in many Broadway or
Disney animated musicals. And I don't get its nom for best original
screenplay. To me the best written script was "Manchester by the Sea."

Looking over the selections - this is the first time in my LIFE - that I have
seen all nine Best Pic nominees before TODAY. Subjective rankings:

Likely favorites to win Best Picture:
1. La La Land
2. Moonlight
3. Hidden Figures
4. Manchester by the Sea
5. Arrival
6. Lion
7. Hell or High Water
8. Fences
9. Hacksaw Ridge

The films I liked the most among the Best Picture noms:
1. Manchester by the Sea
2. Arrival
3. La La Land
4. Hidden Figures
5. Hacksaw Ridge
6. Moonlight
7. Hell or High Water
8. Lion
9. Fences

Have to add that although constructed in a conventionally formulaic and
self-aware way, "Hidden Figures" was for me the most crowd pleasing / enjoyable
of all the movies nominated for Best Picture, followed by "La La Land."
"Manchester" was the most depressing to many patrons - (but not to me) - yet
it's gifted with some of the best writing and acting of the year, esp. Casey
Affleck, who plays with a quiet self-hatred that's volcanic. Watching it, I
felt the air go out of the audience at the end, but to me, it's not a bad
ending. For me, NONE of the films nominated for the top prize this year are
dogs. They're all good. (Although I wouldn't have minded to see Michael
Keaton's evil portrayal in "The Founder" slip in there.) And FWIW, if the Best
Director noms remain an a signal of Best Picture odds - (in recent years they
have not) - then the choices are limited to "La La Land," "Moonlight,"
"Arrival," "Manchester by the Sea" and "Hacksaw Ridge." "Hacksaw," BTW, plays
out like a sentimental William Wyler film with a lot of "Private Ryan" carnage;
excellent craftsmanship but I thought Mel Gibson's pariah status in Hollywood
would shut him out. "Arrival" is slow but has a mind-bending,
out-of-this-world payoff - and "Moonlight" is heartbreakingly vivid in its
portrayal of bullying, gay self-identity and its relationship to the ethos of
masculinity among young black men. All good selections. - d.

Well, let the Hollywood self-gratification begin.

La La Land (14 nominations) was enjoyable and fun, but we all know that any
film that glorifies “the business” (see entries The Artist, Argo) is a
rock-solid lock to be celebrated whether it was the “best” entry or not.

I was truly surprised by the level of suspense generated from start to finish.

Totally agree with you, Doug. I do think she’s been on a roll recently. But
this movie
is more than just her, even though I think she is spectacular. This is
exciting filmmaking.

I thought the same thing. The bullock daughter back story was the attempt to

I can't deny the technical brilliance of the film and the effects keep me from
being bored much of the time but where was the script? We never got to know
anything about the two characters except that Bullock lost a daughter and
Clooney's wife left him when he was on a mission. I couldn't have cared less
about these two people. I saw the film in 3D IMAX. I can't imagine seeing it in
2D.

Yes, we've had some grand flame wars during the history of MOPO! This was a
mere skirmish in comparison. I
've only threatened one poster person with bodily harm, and that was over
the phone. This guy wanted to buy a poster from me but kept dragging his heels,
wouldn't send a deposit, and was generally not somebody I wished to deal with
anymore. Someone else offered me a ton of dough for the same poster and I sold
it. This guy called me and became incredibly unpleasant, insulting me and
basically calling me a crook, a scumbag, the usual dickhead repertoire of
lame insults. I calmly reminded him that he had every chance to purchase the
poster but did not come through with anything resembling a payment. I also
calmly reminded him that i had his physical address and would be happy to show
up at his doorstep in a couple of hours with another linen backed one sheet
which i would then insert in his back passage without the use of lubricating
liquids. Free of charge. I'm a generous fellow. (It is very, very hard to piss
me off, by the way, butTHIS guy was a piece of work.)
I never heard from him again.
Sometimes, the written word just doesn't convey a message as well as the
warm, soothing sound of the human voice, does it?

Carry on, my fellow poster dorks!

Well, here I go with another tangent, but since you bright up Cinema Paradiso...

My all time favorite films are (for me) "the four C's"...Casablanca, Citizen
Kane, City Lights and Cinema Paradiso.

I will never forget seeing Cinema Paradiso in Washington DC, at the AFI. It
was a couple years after the release and I hadn't seen it since the original
run so I jumped at the chance to see the AFI screening.

I sat next to my wife (at the time) and, about 15 minutes before the end of the
movie, I began sobbing like a baby. I had just remembered that the scene withe
the kisses was coming up and it shattered me. What a wonderful, wonderful
moment in film. I honestly don't know if there is a better moment in film then
the kissing reel in Cinema Paradiso. Probably many equal, but maybe none
better.

Yes, Joe's right about EMPIRE. I think if he made it today, Spielberg would hew
closer to Ballard's book which is far more grim in its details of camp life.
Overall, though EMPIRE nails it and young Christian Bale is a revelation.
I find the "too cool to like Spielberg" school almost as irritating as the "too
cool to like Tarantino school". Wildly different in their wolrd view and style,
both have a remarkable facility with the medium.
My favourite director working today, though, is Ridley Scott whose eye is truly
extraordinary and whose films are often politically subversive.

"Empire of the Sun" is one of Spielberg's favorite films. He has stated that he

Hey guys;
I want to chime in for some reason... I'm just a fan who doesn't really know
what he's talking about, but I have a right to my 'opinion', so I'm going to
exercise that right...
Spielberg USED to be my favorite director up until ET... I think that was his
turning point... up until that moment, this fan feels that he was making movies
that HE wanted to make, rather than movies that he thought OTHER people wanted
him to make... He stopped making "fun" movies, only to add his name as
"Executive Producer" on the fun popcorn movies, overshadowing the credits for
the likes of the directors Joe Dante (Gremlins), Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist), and
Robert Zemeckis (Back To The Future, etc.). You can't convince me that the same
guy who brought us Duel, CE3K, Jaws and Raiders decided to make movies like
TheColor Purple andEmpire of the Sun because he wanted to. He made those in
hopes for awards... He finally got it with Schindler's List, but didn't quit
there... Sure, he's the most talented and capable mogul who can bring to the
table quality product ( I don't want to piss Tom off), but this moviegoer just
wants to see his epic popcorn-movies, which is what he's best at. If I want a
History lesson on Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, or Lincoln, I'll watch the
History Channel. I'd rather watch Minority Report, Jurassic Park, or that lousy
War Of The Worlds than Lincoln, no matter how powerful, moving and accurate it
may be. (IMHO)

A pair of interesting stories evaluating why Steven Spielberg - who, along with
pre-1996 Martin Scorcese aremy favorite "still-living" directors of all time -
is a big loser when it comes to winning awards. "Argo" was fine, but I thought
"Lincoln" and the "Silver Linings Playbook" were better. Meanwhile, this year's
Oscars telecast with Seth MacFarlane made me vomit in my mouth a little. The
first article is from Buzz Feed, the second is from the NY Times. - d.

“Argo” Win Makes Steven Spielberg Hollywood's Biggest LoserOnce again, the Best

Tonight, Hollywood officially turned its back on its king. Again. The triumph
of Argo in the Best Picture race, snatching victory from the jaws of Lincoln
brings Steven Spielberg's win-loss record to a dismal one victory in seven at
bats for entertainment's biggest prize.

And tonight, not only did he lose out on the Best Picture prize that once
seemed his, but the consolation prize of Best Director, the category in which
Argo's Affleck was not even nominated, was also snatched away and handed to
Life of Pi's Ang Lee.

For a man who is widely considered Hollywood's godfather — who is in his

That's interesting, Doug. My oldest son is a very unemotional person, but
he loves Cinema Paradiso (as I do) and I watched it again with him and he
too cried at the kissing scene, and I can't remember the last time he cried
about anything.

What a wonderful movie (whether or not it won Oscars!).

Check your spam folder, that's where mine ended up.

in spam folders but received no response.

Does anyone know if Jaime Mendez is up and running? He's had a six sheet of
mine for some time and his communication has been really spotty. Is something
up?

Thanks

Doug

He took it from this...

To this...
