Re: [MOPO] Silent movie posters under our floorboards
What a story ! I've heard many stories about movie posters found in closed theatres, old houses and attic sales, but I've never heard about movie posters found under the floor :-) Thanks for sharing George, and welcome to MOPO. Sela Faverie www.mauvais-genres.com - La petite boutique du Cinéma de genre. On Wed, Sep 24, 2014 at 10:33 PM, George Bryce gkbr...@telus.net wrote: I am a new subscriber to the MoPo ListServ and am enjoying learning more about this community and movie memorabilia in general. By this, my first posting, I wanted to share an experience I think other MoPo subscribers will find interesting. This past summer I found a treasure trove of silent movie posters under the floorboards in our 90-year old house. Having had another floor replaced about a decade earlier, I anticipated I would find more posters under these floors. Therefore, I was as careful as one can be in ripping-up a old, damaged fir floor with powertools, crowbars, etc. I was not disappointed. (I have since replaced the old fir flooring with new oak engineered laminate flooring.) Under the floors in the two rooms that I was renovating, I found about ten intact posters and several “pieces” of posters. These posters were used to promote silent movies that came out between 1919 and 1923. The posters had been placed between the subfloor and the fir floor when our house was built in 1924 to dampen the squeaking sound that would otherwise occur without some interface between the two layers of wood. (The original fir floor came in strips about 3 inches wide and anywhere from four to 12 feet in length, and each strip was nailed down to the rougher subfloor about every 16 inches.) I was interviewed about my discovery by local journalists from both TV and radio of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp (CBC). I used one radio interview to create a soundtrack for a video/slideshow of the silent movie posters that I “uncovered” and have posted this video at following YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2jzuJe9XF0 (If this does not show as an “activate” link, go to YouTube and search using the subject line for this posting.) I had originally thought that it might be common for old houses like ours to have silent movie posters used as a floor interface sound dampening material. However, I have since learnt that it was a fairly rare event; other materials were used more often, mostly newspapers or even horsehair. I am wondering if others MoPo subscribers have found movie posters (from silent movies or not) under their floors? Or have heard of a similar occurrence, be it in Canada, the United States or elsewhere in the world? I trust you will enjoy this YouTube video, and I look forward to hearing from other subscribers about this find. Re: [MOPO] Our 19th Birthday: Not Dead Yet!
Congrats Scott and long life to MOPO ! As Bruce then commented, the other 2 existing poster forums “are pretty dead” as well. Are we really all talked out? Has Facebook taken over the world? Is MoPo an Internet dinosaur and no longer necessary? Questions to ponder…but first, as I always do every February 24th, a brief review of MoPo history… On February 24, 1995 the first official MoPo post was distributed via American University’s listserv. For a few weeks prior to that launch date, the handful of original MoPo members simply cc’d their e-mail messages to the other people in the group (there were 11 at the beginning). In keeping with my annual tradition, I’d like to recognize those MoPo pioneers: Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan Zweifel, George Nichol, Cindy Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, myself (your humble listowner) and AOL’er Static555—real name Jeff Static. Michael, Rob and Evan are still members. Cindy sadly passed away in June 2008, but her husband Jay has taken her place on MoPo. Hats off to all the MoPo originals! I’d also like to send out my annual thank you to American University, our generous host. I’m surprised, but grateful, they continue to maintain their listserv system, a relic from the early days of the Internet. Yes, it has limitations (no fancy graphics, mail delivery issues) but it still serves our intimate group well. Happy 19th Birthday MoPo! But will we make it to 20? Should we? So here's a question for the list - excepting photographs - which illustrations on film posters really get the image of a star - doesn't matter which one - REALLY right? I point to the Roger Souble portrait of Veronica Lake. There is art that really captures the look and the essence of the star's appeal. K. Kirby McDaniel MovieArt Original Film Posters P.O. Joyeux anniversaire Mopo ! Sela. Le 24 févr. 2013 à 19:32, Scott Burns a écrit : Time flies when you’re having fun…MoPo turns 18 today! On February 24, 1995 the first MoPo post was distributed via American University’s listserv. I’m truly amazed (and very thankful) that American U keeps their listserv up and running, after all, listservs are SO last century! It may be a dinosaur, but it still serves us well. In keeping with my annual tradition, I’d like to recognize the 11 original MoPo’ers: Mahtab Moayeri, Michael Danese, Rob Ellis, Donna Tschetter, Goh Kai Shen, Evan Zweifel, George Nichol, Cynthia Nemeth-Johannes, Adam Ehrlich, myself (your humble listowner) and AOL’er Static555 (real name is Jeff Static). I finally stumbled upon his true identity. Michael, Rob and Evan are still members. Thanks to everyone for helping MoPo reach this milestone.
