Re: [MOPO] Last Living Performer from CASABLANCA Dies: Madeleine Lebeau

2016-05-15 Thread Daniel Edward Kinske
I think the “Reel Art” book covers this topic (poster crediting) pretty well,
in that of course any particular film might have several contributors—more
unsung than sung. The Art Directors get all the credit for all of their
projects, though each film is a team effort. It is a bit easier to credit
illustrators if they created the artwork—depending upon the era (Bill seems to
have caught more of the era of photo vs. illustration use.)

There are a lot of classic posters that are signed, so that makes it a bit
easier to identify. So, when you see “The Cameraman” poster (MGM, 1928), that
is signed “Eaton”, which is the surname of Malcolm Eaton. Not easy to find a
lot of background information on him, but it is out there somewhere. He
provided a lot of artwork for Buster Keaton films—i.g. “Spite Marriage”,
however, there is also an interior pressbook caricature by Al Hirschfeld, so
that film has at least two contributors.

I’m all for giving proper credit to whomever earned it, but finding hard proof
isn’t always easy—however patterns always exist (and easier, for me that is, to
stick more with the poster artists—so that is why I like seeing James
Montgomery Flagg’s work like “Lost Horizon” in the 30s, and then his earlier
work from the teens—like two early posters that Heritage will be selling in the
forthcoming Signature auction—of course Flagg is quite an extraordinary artist,
but all deserve credit.)

Highly recommended, if you haven't seen it already, the documentary Cinema's
Exiles: From Hitler to Hollywood, about the many actors, writers and
directors who fled Europe for the US between 1933 and 1939.

The most memorable bit in the film concerns the singing of The Marseillaise
in Casablanca. Already a moving scene, it is especially poignant once you
know the background of all the actors, every one a refugee from Nazism.

Her life and her being signed at Warner Bros. reminds me of how - in

US was still in its Neutrality Act phase.
