Re: [MOPO] North by Northwest question

2010-12-24 Thread JOHN REID Vintage Movie Memorabilia
Hi Paul
I remember bidding on that scene in the same auction. Its interesting that,
although the auction was 10 years ago, a couple of the scenes were purchased by
MoPo members.

Thanks to everyone for the great input on this and Merry Christmas to all.
Regards
John

Must have been around the same time I got one of man being frizzled alive
after the crop duster’s collision with the oil truck. Now there’s a cheery
image for the festive season! A detail of the scene that was cut/never filmed,
allegedly because it was too graphic.

  http://www.movieposterstudio.com/tmp1/NbNW_crash.jpg

Came with a photostat negative of the storyboard sequence:-

  http://www.movieposterstudio.com/tmp1/NbNW_sb.jpg

Dan Auiler showed these images amongst many others in his book “Hitchcock’s
Secret Notebooks”.

John – knowing your shared love of The Corpulent One, I’m sure you’re very
familiar with this book anyway, but I just had a quick look in case it
contained any clues to your mystery scene. Unfortunately not, but perhaps worth
trying to get in touch with Dan Auiler, as he clearly sifted through a lot of
these storyboards during his research.

Best of Christmas Wishes to everyone from ‘Blighty’.

Not usually that keen on props, but the newspaper from North by

Another one for me would be the lighter from Strangers on a Train,
anyone seen that pop up anywhere?

I was hoping that there might be some record of what was planned for
the film. This scene obviously wasnt used in the film. The auction
stated that it had been part of the original concept idea but if
there is no actual record of this there is probably no way of

[MOPO] North by Northwest question

2010-12-23 Thread Ron Magid
The storyboard shown was drawn by the great Mentor Huebner.

Alas, he was one of the most prolific of all preproduction artists, and his
drawings were virtually all done in the same style and scale. So without
further
information it may be that we will never know what film this art is for. (It
doesn't look like NxNW to me.)

Happy holidays!

hi john, it just occurred to me that if you could work out what the aspect
ratio 'masked off' on your card was that might help.  only about 40 films were
shot in vistavision's 1.66:1 aspect ratio, so if that matched the markings on
the storyboard it would be harder to argue against it being a dropped scene
from nbynw.nps although, of course, the man who knew too much was also shot in
vistavision!

I recall seeing a Cinema Exhibit at the Cincinnati Art Museum about 20 years
ago when I was living there

they had a display of storyboards from the Rushmore sequence along with a
film clip to play so you could see how they matched it

not sure where this storyboard would fit in. What characters would they be?

Does anyone have any ideas on whether it might be from North by Northwest.

Hi Neil
I also bid on the one with the driving sequence. I guess it is possible that it
might be from The Man Who Knew Too Much - trouble is there is probably no
record of the auction now. It would be good to get some information from the
seller but its so long ago that would be difficult.

hi john
i bought one of these NbyNW storyboards from the seller at the time
(one from the coastal road driving sequence). i remember that the seller was
also selling storyboards from other Hitchcock and non-Hitchcock films (all
graphite on vellum) so is it possible your board is from another film? my
memory may be faulty but i seem to remember that there was a board or two
billed as being from the contemporaneous The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956).

i would think that these are preliminary storyboards rather than
conceptual art as many had arrows indicating camera moves. that said, they are
not as hyper-detailed as the final, published storyboards for NbyNW.

i have often wondered who else acquired these storyboards at the time
and also a prop newspaper from North By Northwest that sold on ebay (i think
also around 9 years ago). if anyone has any of these i'd be interested to
know.
cheers

I was hoping that there might be some record of what was planned for
the film. This scene obviously wasnt used in the film. The auction stated that
it had been part of the original concept idea but if there is no actual record
of this there is probably no way of knowing whether it was from the film or not.

isn't that Marilyn Monroe in the background??
