I wonder if Mara Corday was there?

I know exactly what Kirby means.

I understand the more cynical West Coast collectors refer to these things as
THE AISLE OF THE DEAD.

I agree with Manola. I don't think she was slamming the show so much as she
was making an observation. I've been at these shows and experienced "surreal"
moments myself there. You only have to see one fawning, even weeping
fan in your life to understand what I mean. Doesn't mean the shows aren't
fun, they are. And if you think most of these actors are "working" when they
sign all this stuff, you're dreaming! They can take home a few thousand from
these shows. More power to 'em.

Re: [MOPO] NY Times - Hollywood Memorabilia Show in Burbank

2009-10-26 Thread Toochis Morin
What sucks is that Ms. Dargis DOESN'T belong at the show. She's so jaded she
can't appreciate that people want to be close to their favorite films in any
way. She should stick to watching film and not watching film-goers.

Now on a different note. I saw HURT LOCKER and it was amazing. Kathryn
Bigelow is a brilliant filmmaker and it was the closest thing I've seen to a
Sergio Leone film in a long time. I got to meet her and she's so cool. She
was a painter and you can see it in her films. The cinematography was riveting
and music powerful. The actors were wonderful and will have brilliant careers
ahead of them.

She signed autographs because yes, Ms. Dargis they want a brilliant filmmakers'
autographs, not yours.

I saw it, too and thought perhaps that Ms. Dargis was the one who was
"surreal." How good to know, too, that the public was well behaved ;) This
is the kind of condescending stuff that makes so called normal people roll
their eyes.

Anyway, a memorabilia show is a whole lot more fun than endless
football/baseball/whatever discussions.

Re: [MOPO] NY Times - Hollywood Memorabilia Show in Burbank

2009-10-23 Thread Franc
Ray sold it over a year ago. The last show I attended was in April 08. I
thought the new owners were taking the show into a different direction,
concentrating much more on autograph seekers and stars than on dealers
and buyers of movie memorabilia. It was still fun, but a little
different and in some ways more professionally run. Did anyone go to the
last show that was reported on in the NYTimes and if so, how was it?
This was the first April show I missed in about ten years. FRANC

I was not aware that Ray and Sharon had sold the Hollywood Collectors
Show. I wonder why? I hope he goes back to selling GREAT 16mm films. Ray
was one of the greatest film dealers I have ever dealt with in the hobby
of collecting 16mm film prints.
