[MOSAIC] forward from Gary

2006-10-29 Thread ginger/rob
I am forwarding this from Gary:
+++
Please advise. I am working with my teachers at grades K - 6 in adopting
many of the principles of a Balanced Literacy program. We are following a
lot of the work done by Fountas and Pinnell. A question and concern among
many of the teachers is grading. Now that report cards have to be issued
over the next week, teachers are questioning how we grade students in a B.L.
classroom. Any guidance you can provide me is appreciated! My direct
e-mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you.

It is my impression that miscue is performed when students are reading
significantly longer passages than most in kindergarten can handle.

2006-10-29 Thread Lisa Szyska
This is a great suggestion...his books will have the
research sited. You can also e-mail him from his site:
http://www.jrichardgentry.com/
Lots of times these professors are happy to help us
locate research. Dr. Steven Krashen did send me some
information re: SSR when I requested it, so maybe Dr.
Gentry will do the same.

Good luck!

Re: [MOSAIC] Just Right Books for Proficient Decoders

2006-10-29 Thread Carlevarom
Pam, that was a very thoughtful answer. Another consideration about book
selection is that if a child is really interested in a topic, he might want to
read a book a little harder than we think is appropriate. This might be just
right for him for that time and he will work at reading it. Basically, I
use the 5 finger (we want it fun to read) and retelling (make sure you can
follow what is happening) method. Choosing independent level books should be
an
extension of learning to monitor reading. In The Comprehension Toolkit the
use of easy, high interest books is suggested for teaching monitoring. Marsha

Re: [MOSAIC] Just Right Books for Proficient Decoders

2006-10-29 Thread Kukonis
Linda,
I love your two questions added at the end of the 5 finger rule. It would
work great in first grade cuz some of my kids don't recognize that they
miscued or even skipped words...
and as far as some of the fluent decoders they think because they are
word calling they are reading. Your two questions are really introductory
lessons placed authentically in reading workshop so that kids get they are
supposed to think metacognitively... you're giving them schema before you
even
teach a lesson about metacognition.this makes so much more sense than
teaching metacognition separately in a mini-lesson when kids are learning about

other how well other strong readers read... if they have had the experience of
trying to answer those question first and then all those voice in your head
lessons I think the whole thing (picking a just right book as well as how do
you
think) would work much better than learning about a just right book and then
saying in addition you must think about the voice in your head..which is
unfortunately what I did

Re: [MOSAIC] Just Right Books for Proficient Decoders

2006-10-29 Thread Linda DeGreen
In grade 2, another problem I have with the 5 finger rule is that some
kids don't know that they don't know a word. They either miscue a word
that doesn't make sense or a nonsense word. So we added ask yourself,
Does this make sense? Can I retell what I just read? It isn't perfect
but it gets them to keep thinking if the book is a good fit/just right
book to read. Many minilessons at the beginning of the year go into
teaching kids to choose for independent reading. I'd like other ideas
too on what helps in a workshop for grade 2.
Thanks,
Linda
