Hi Joy,

What book are you using for the Trail of Tears? I'll be teaching my
class about this topic later this year, and this sounds like a great activity!

Thanks for sharing!

I understand what you mean. I think children need to know about this event in
history. It's not pretty, and they need to know that our history includes
shameful events such as this.

was devoted to slave life on the Hermitage, but try as I might, I could fins
so very little related to the Trail of Tears. When I asked a docent, they
pointed out one very small (think 5x7) plaque with a brief blurb that
basically glossed it over BIG TIME. As a teacher of Native American
children, I found this insulting and was quite disappointed.

This is why it was so hard to think of leaving my school last year. Thank
goodness our new administrator embraces what I'm doing. Although I envy school
systems with libraries, leveled book rooms, and other fabulous resources,
having the freedom and flexibility to do things like this is a privilege I
won't easily give up.

Eve,

We are reading The Trail of Tears by Joseph Bruchac. It is a "Step into
Reading" book, level 5. It is not as challenging as I would like, but it is a
good way to introduce Textmapping so they can focus on the process.

The story I wanted to use is: The Trail on Which They Wept: The Story of a
Cherokee Girl by Dorothy Hoobler. It is a chapter book about a young girl and
her family's experiences when forced to leave their home in Georgia. I used it
when I was student teaching. Unfortunately, it is out of print. If I can locate
enough for a Lit. Circle, I will use it to revisit this topic.

In the book, The Partly Cloudy Patriot (Paperback) by Sarah Vowell, there is
an essay about presidential libraries. She visits the LBJ and Nixon
presidential libraries to see how they handled the downside (Vietnam,
Watergate) of their presidencies. She found that they put all the critical
information right out there because the public today demands it.
It is a fun book to read and her essays are well-contructed.
