Re: [MOSAIC] "Hatchet"
One of our summer school teachers read Hatchet with his children last year, and they loved it! I talked to one of the students lately, and she's now reading Brian's Winter on her own. There's also a video that is very true to the book Hatchet to show, but don't get the cartoon version video -- it doesn't hold the attention. It's just a picture on the screen and then someone reading a chapter. Then another picture and a chapter narration. Re: [MOSAIC] OFF-TOPIC - Words Their Way
I administer the primary spelling inventory from Words Their Way at the beginning of the year. My classes usually divide out pretty close to "down the middle", so I have 2 spelling groups. They get their word sorts on Monday, sort them, have them checked, then write their words in their word study notebooks. During the week, they use word work materials (I do Reading Workshop based on the Daily 5) to work with their words for that week. On Wednesday, they take their word cards home, along with the spelling homework sheet, sort them, and write the "rule" for their sort. On Friday they have a spelling test/writing sort. I also give everyone the same 5 high frequency words, which are written in their notebook and "worked" on during Reading Workshop as well. Re: [MOSAIC] "Hatchet"
There are excellent resources on the Internet for this book. Reluctant readers are usually hooked after the plan emergency also, this book is on tape ..very well done. I usually have kids listen (follow) along to the first 3 chaptersI haven't found any student yet that wasn't hooked after hearing a taped presentation. Most libraries have this taped version. After completing Hatchet, I do a compare and contrast author study beginning with the book *My Side of the Mountain - *Jean Craighead George On 1/30/08, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Hi All, > Sorry about changing the topic, but I'm starting an "emergency" unit on > the > novel Hatchet. Re: [MOSAIC] "Hatchet"
I use Hatchet with my special needs 6th graders as a part of a courage theme. Prior to Hatchet we read some stories about careers that require courage such as Firefighters and some short biographies of folks who display a lot of courage in adverse circumstances. I have done a lot of different things with the book and each year adds a few more. We read aloud part of the book. Some chapters we do as lit circles. WE do lot and lots of drawing to check for understanding. We do lots of turn and talk and use lots of QAR. Generally we use small bits of the movie based on Hatchet as we read to compare and contrast. Also Hatchet provides multiple opportunities for addressing antonyms and synonyms which are a part of our core content for sixth grade. it is a great book for making connections as an earlier poster suggested because the overwhelming majority of my students have also faced major family turmoil. I have gotten information packets from the Red Cross to tie in the emergency preparedness factor. This also ties into our science themes for sixth grade in the study of living things and their need for survival. My students prepare an emergency survival kit. I have used Inspiration software to create different types of webs, checks for understanding etc. because of their graphics.
