Re: [MOSAIC] Voacbulay and Literature Circles

2008-02-20 Thread Mohrhauser, Sarah
I have used and advocate a similar vocab tracker; I call mine a
Language Log. It's a bookmark for students to mark words they come
across that they don't know. Using CSSR (Context, Structure, Sound, and
Reference), they mark next to the word either a letter showing which
technique helped them discover a logical meaning, or just a check that
using the strategy in some way helped them figure out the word. Words
they don't get become their word study for the week.

I have my students, all year, record words from their reading on
a bookmark
called a vocab tracker. They then choose five words a week to
take a quiz
on. I have a flash card game that I got from a cooperative
learning
workshop, it ends with a quiz the students take. If you are
interested,
please e-mail me off line and I will send you the specific
directions for
the co-op flash card game.

Re: [MOSAIC] DRA2

2008-02-20 Thread ckmet
I just took a DRA II training yesterday afternoon. The kits are broken up
in K-3 which goes up to level 40 and the other kit 4-8.

I'm not sure if the new DRA2 has levels 40-60, but the old one did. 40 is
 fourth grade, 50-fifth grade, etc.

 From: Joy [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I just started watching the DRA2 for K-3 training DVD, which our school
 just
started using this year. Although I teach 4th, I thought it would be
 beneficial
to know what is going on in the younger grades, and as a possible
 diagnostic
 tool for struggling readers.

Now I'm going to ask a question that reveals how clueless I am, is there
 a
DRA2 for upper grades? Assessment is the one area I feel weakest on now
 that I
am teaching fourth. I felt so much better about assessing my little
 seconds, but
need some guidance with these older kiddos.

One thing to consider if you offer suggestions, it took five years for
 them to
get this, after my begging and cajoling for something to use for
 consistency
across the grades. Whatever I use, it has to be FREE as I am at this
 tiny school
with no budget (and my DH is currently unemployed so I can't afford to
 pay for
 anything out of pocket).

 Thanks.

I am one of the lucky ones. I work in a school where every teacher (K-5)
has an interactive whiteboard, each grade level has their own cart of
laptops (except for fourth and fifth graders who each have their own
personal laptop that they keep with them all day), and a fully equipped
computer lab. Each classroom has at least two desktop computers and every
teacher has their own personal laptop. Each grade level has their own
digital camera and camcorder. Every teacher has an iPod. Every teacher
K-3 has a palm pilot. We have a full time technology facilitator that is
there for technical issues and also plans projects with each grade level
and does inclusion to teach computer skills. We have weekly technology
staff development. We are required to use Edutest and a online
prescriptive learning program to assess and tutor the kids. I feel in
fourth and fifth grade (I teach fourth), technology has been an essential
tool for planning and implementing instruction the past few years. I'm
not sure if there is any correlation but the school's test scores have
continued to rise each year we have been adding new technology (one more
year and we're out of school improvement!). However, one thing is for
sure-the students have been more engaged and excited about learning now
than were before we brought the technology in and each year their computer
and problem solving skills become greater. I am still amazed at the
student who refuses to read a book or do any traditional school work but
whose eyes light up and produces the most spectacular multimedia
presentation when put in front of a computer! I would love to hear other
people's thoughts on this!

your own classroom or within the entire building? as well as how you
use this technology in your own teaching practices? Also, is there a
Technology person that supports you and the rest of your colleagues or
are you kind of left on your own to figure it all out? One more
question, How do you see technology and its applications for the
classroom in the future?

Hey everyone!

I was doing some price comparisons between websites tonight and I wanted to
pass along a good deal that I found on the Barnes Noble website.

I just ordered To Understand and Notebook Know-How for less than $30. (Amazon
is selling To Understand alone for $25.) I paid $17.50 for To Understand and
$11.55 for Notebook Know-How ($15 on Amazon). I also qualified for free
standard shipping and I found a 15% off code online, so I actually paid less
than $15 for To Understand.

We are a Title One school and our principal uses a lot of that money to
fund technology. However, the 1:1 laptop initiative is provided to all
Title One schools in the district. Since everything is Apple, a lot of
the perks for attending staff developments are the iPods and cameras that
Apple gives the district for purchasing their products. Also, our
Superindendent just said that the two main goals for the next several
years are expanding technology even further and adding to the teacher
supplement so I think we will continue to have technology funded by the

2008-02-20 Thread Carol Lau
I guess we should start checking for coupon codes before ordering online.

Lisa,

I actually didn't even write the code down. I just copied it directly from
a website. I NEVER EVER buy anything online without googling the company.
Most of the time I'm able to find a coupon code in a matter of seconds.

What I did was: google barnes and noble coupon code
You might have to do a bit of clicking to find one that's current and not
for members only.

I just did that google search for you and right away I found this code
V6C9V6C for 15% off:
http://www.pocketdeal.com/deal-Barnes---Noble-15--off-one-item%5E34226.aspx
*Don't know if it works, but you can give it a try!

There are tons of online coupon code sharing websites. (I always find good
ones for Kohls.)
:) Hope that helps!

Would you be able to share the 15 percent code or how you found it?

Thanks,
Lisa

 Hey everyone!

I was doing some price comparisons between websites tonight and I
wanted to pass along a good deal that I found on the Barnes Noble
 website.

I just ordered To Understand and Notebook Know-How for less than
$30. (Amazon is selling To Understand alone for $25.) I paid $17.50
for To Understand and $11.55 for Notebook Know-How ($15 on Amazon).
I also qualified for free standard shipping and I found a 15% off
code online, so I actually paid less than $15 for To Understand.

 :) Happy Reading!

Re: [MOSAIC] Words Their Way

2008-02-20 Thread Karen Shook
I have been using pretty extensively this year, I think on the whole my kids
are doing really well with it. I have 4 sorts going right now (down from 5 or 6
at the start of the year - yes that was a nightmare). Right now I just need
some extra time to get more of the games made, but I like it and my kids all
love it.

know how some of you may be using word sorts within your classroom and
how your students seem to be progressing using this activity?

Re: [MOSAIC] Words Their Way

2008-02-20 Thread Bonita DeAmicis

---I have used words their way in a fifth grade room for three years now. No
prior grades use the word sorting (yet--some are starting). What I find is it
focuses my students on really examining the words instead of mindlessly filling
out blanks in a spelling book or repeatedly memorizing words on a list without
thinking about why are these words together and what can these words teach me
about spelling in general? I love the conversations the sorts cause to happen,
like hey, words they end in ible are not complete base words, but able endings
have whole base words, is that always the case? (never had that kind of talk
with a spell book).

I like to do 2-3 sorts with them--an open sort, an assigned spell sort, and
then a meaning or sound sort. We also do the assigned sort together using
Inspiration on the smartboard. (3 different spell groups--one works with an
aide).

I assign word hunts for homework and spell sentences that examine the grammar
ideas that we are working with in caughtya sentences. Then I do an old
fashioned sentence dictation quiz (should I be embarrassed?) that involves
both grammar and the spell pattern studied (some words not on the list that
follow the pattern). This feels like a comfortable base that I can manage in
my room. My hope is to add in games and fun next year--although the children
find the sorts fun and interesting on their own.

Re: [MOSAIC] Words Their Way

Hi Brie,

The thing I don't like about this is that the CD will not work with Vista,
which is on my new laptop, so I can't do any planning at home. I really like
the DVD. I also wish the games were more explicitly explained. I'm the kind of
person who really needs to experience them in order to understand them. Seems
silly, but there is always some kind of disconnect
