Re: [MOSAIC] Reading Specialist Praxis and another question

2008-04-19 Thread Renee
Denise,

I'm going to be very candid here, because I am a little confused. It
seems from your wording here that you have little experience with
children, don't really know what to do with a student scenario, and do
not know how to begin to write a standards-based lesson for language
arts or reading for 6th-12th grade students. How did you come to want
to be a reading specialist?

Re: [MOSAIC] Reading Specialist Praxis and another question

2008-04-19 Thread sheila eisen
Denise,

When I took my reading specialist test, I had been out of my college classes
for several years. The only thing that I felt that allowed me to pass the test
(and I did very well) was my experience in the reading classroom.

I don't want to discourage you, but it IS all about what a specialist would
work on with students. Maybe you could pick the brain of someone who's in that
position now and look over the yearly lesson plans. Why did she/he select this
specific strategy with these students? Why was this the best material to use
at this time? Maybe go to the resource center at the local college and check
out some videos??? If you have access to a reading specialist or to a school
with a reading specialist, I'd see if you could shadow a specialist for a few
days, possibly even a few of them, at different grade levels. Become familiar
with materials at many different age levels & reading levels. Also become
familiar with many reading strategies. Then try to determine what you would do
with a _ grade student who struggles with _. And then change the grade
level and the strategy. Look for lesson plans online that would address these
issues.

It's not easy trying to memorize all the materials, but then the role of a
reading specialist is not an easy one either. There's a tremendous amount of
knowledge that's out there, and even those of us who have years and years
experience don't know it all -- not even close!

Good luck!

Sheila

[MOSAIC] Kindergarten Packets

2008-04-19 Thread Freida Hammett
Heather, One source you might check out are the
"Little Books" from Ohio State/Fountas & Pinell. They
cost 25cents each, are bound in nice colored card
stock with titles in English and a few in Spanish.
With families who do not speak English, the Spanish
titles would help (at least for many of your ESOL
students.) They have leveled books through Level D,
as well as Mother Goose rhyme books.

We used these books to bridge kindergarten students to
first grade by mailing each child a few books each
month. We sent Spanish titles to children whose first
language was Spanish since we knew the parents were
more likely to interact with the students then.We
obtained money from a local grant and the total cost
was about $750 for a population of 125 students.

One other source that you might want to look into is 3
part cards which are sometimes billed as moveable
books. The first card has a picture and label, for
example a picture of a cat and under it the word "cat"
is written. The second card is the same picture as
the first, minus the label. The third is the label
"cat." There are many "games" that can be done with
these cards to encourage literacy. I have seen
children who cannot read figure out which label went
with which card. I personally think they are
fantastic for developing visual beginning literacy
skills.

Email me privately if you want some resources or more
information on this. I might even be able to help you
get some in color at an affordable price.

Good luck,

Freida Hammett
