Re: [MOSAIC] Reading INtervention program for middle school
Pat, I teach 6th grade reading and I used The Comprehension Toolkit this past school year. I went to my school yesterday to look at our state reading test results and out of 96 students who took the test I had 98% who scored proficient (76 scored a 4 and 18 scored a 3) on our state reading test. I only had 2 students score a 2 (one of these students is MR and reads on a 1st grade level and the other is severely LD) and none that scored a 1. Needless to say my principal was ecstatic as was I. In fact our school in grades 3-6 implemented the toolkit and every grade level had over 90% of our students to score a 4 or a 3. I can't help but attribute that to the teaching of the strategies that are in the toolkit. I would also suggest that you read a book I'm currently reading that is awesome and it's for grades 6-12. It's called When Kids Can't Read What Teachers Can Do by Kylene Beers. It's published by Heinemann. I hope this helps! Pat, Tim Rasinski has some great material on increasing fluency/comprehension. I heard him speak at the Lakota Reading and Writing Institute (in Ohio) last month and was quite impressed. He spoke about "voice makes meaning" and teaching even older kids prosody. He has written several books and articles on this topic. I also have his website address.
