[MOSAIC] new addition to TOOLS page

2009-02-25 Thread ginger/rob
Keith has just added the following to our TEACHING TOOLS page located at:
www.readinglady.com/mosaic/tools/tools.htm

At the very top of the Staff Development section:
1. Ellin Keene's What's Essential outline 2008

Here is a quick link to get there directly:
http://readinglady.com/mosaic/tools/tools.htm#4

This is the crucial document that Jennifer is speaking about in her recent
post:

Think about Ellin's What's Essential list. If everyone
works from that, every teacher our students have from K-12 will have a focus
that will benefit literacy development. That's the floor...what every child
needs. If the child's interests and needs draw us to teach something
else...then great. One has to have a vision for what children should know
and be able
to do in order to make the teachable moments really work for the child.
The
What's Essential list does that.
Jennifer

Thank you Ellin for helping to keep our eyes on what IS essential

[MOSAIC] questioning/comprehension strategy

2009-02-25 Thread Nicole J. Marshall
Hello everyone. My name is Nicole Marshall and I am currently taking a course
at Wayne State University on teaching reading to elementary children. In the
class we are reading the Mosaic of Thought and in chapter 5 it talks a lot
about the questioning/comprehension strategy called a crafting session...

Has anyone ever done a crafting session in their classroom? How did it work
out? What do you do if you do not have two people (and you only have yourself)
to demonstrate this to the class? Will it work as efficiently with only one
person demonstrating?

[MOSAIC] Read Across America

2009-02-25 Thread erika522
Hello all,

Read Across America is right around the corner...next week to be exact!! I was
just wondering what some of your districts were doing in honor of Dr. Seuss'
birthday. My district is always looking for new ideas. Any ideas would be
greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Re: [MOSAIC] Read Across America

2009-02-25 Thread Susan Tavernier
Our school (kids and staff) will be in pajamas on March 2nd. We have
several outside readers coming to read to the kids. Green eggs and Ham
along with birthday cupcakes will be served for lunch. During lunch we
will be playing Bingo for Books THe students brought in gently used
books for the even. We also have a volunteer who will be coming in
dressed as the Cat in The Hat. He will visit all of the classrooms.
