I just held a Parent University for my classroom last night. I covered

fluency, reading comprehension (before, during, and after strategies:
predicting, connecting, questioning), and summer reading.

Station 1: Fluency
I assessed each student's WCPM and overall fluency and then shared

with the student and parent how the score ranked with norms for 3rd
graders at this time of the year. I also shared with parents a list of
tips for increasing fluency as well as additional information about what
fluency is.

Station 2: Reading Comprehension
This station taught parents how to read with their children to enhance

comprehension. I provided a guide for before, during, and after reading
specific to a story that I provided time for them to read . . . but with
the understanding that the same structure should be applied to other
fiction reads.

Station 3: Summer Reading
Here, students and parents worked together to come up with three

summer reading goals. If 2 of the 3 goals are met and the goal sheet is
returned at the beginning of next year, those students names will be put
in a drawing for a Hastings gift card. Students also made a bookmark at
the center and received a list of recommended books for third graders.

If you have additional questions or ideas for how I could improve my

Parent University please feel free to ask/share.

[MOSAIC] Student Question from Katie-Kindergarten Word Study

2009-03-29 Thread CHIPPBABE
Hi
I am a Title I teacher and when the K students come to me to work on site
words. We do several things to help with sight words--we use magnetic letters
to
create them again, write the sight words on the board, use our fingers to
help rewrite the words as we say the sounds out loud. Then write them again
from memory.
The children locate the sight words in library books as well as read and
write the room (posters, books, etc.are available)--hunting for the sight
words
we are working on that week. We write sentences using the sight words and do
reassemble cut-up sentences that I have prepared beforehand. We play memory
games with the sight words, too--concentration, splat, etc.
I usually work on just a couple of sight words at a time. I find more than
that can get overwhelming.
Hope this helps.

[MOSAIC] kindergarten and sight words

2009-03-29 Thread pat7170
In response to Katie's question about sight word retention in kindergarten:
?Not all children might be developmentally ready for sight word identification.
However Patricia Cuningham's word wall approach could be effective.?The words
are cut out in their configuration.? The teacher talks about the individual
letters that make up the word and the kids bodily cheer/clap the words- raising
arms up for tall letters and bending for letters that have tails. They
are?displayed on?a word wall- that should have the alphabet and their
names/pictures?displayed. Follow up would be? word hunts using "read around the
room" or highlighters? and also a read ,make write sheet-sheet? divided into
three columns- they read the word, use a stamper or letter tiles to make the
word, and then in the last column they wite the word.?Rainbow write? magnetic
letters can be used?to make words and play mix-it fix it. There are many
companies that make simple blackline?sight vocabulary books that can reinforce
their word knowledge.

[MOSAIC] List Etiquette

2009-03-29 Thread Keith Mack
I'd like to take a moment and remind everyone that Mosaic is a very large
list - over 2000 people. We've had a number of things happen recently so I
thought it a good time to review some basic list etiquette.

1. CONTACT THE PERSON NOT THE ENTIRE LIST
When having a side conversation or request for materials don't send out a
message to over 2000 people. Contact the INDIVIDUAL. This also applies to
thank-you's, "me too", "I agree", and other personal questions/requests. The
individual's email address is in the email header - contact the individual
off-list.

***If you have material to share and would like to have it posted on the
Mosaic website, please contact me off-list and I will work with you to post
the resources on the website.

2. DELETE OR EDIT PREVIOUS CONTENT
"Think Green" with your words! When replying, please DELETE all of previous
post OR EDIT previous post to a bare minimum of words that relate to your
reply. We also have messages rejected by the server because they are so
long. Mostly this is a problem for people who read the digest. They have to
scroll through pages and pages of quoted material.

3. No Subject or "Mosaic Digest" Subject
We've all send messages without subjects. If you are replying to a "no
subject" or generic "digest" subject, please change the subject to fit the
content of the message. The same is true when a thread changes from one
topic to another topic. Please make sure the subject relates to the content.

Thanks to everyone for continued cooperation in list etiquette.
