I'm a fifth grade teacher that wants to do author studies this year.
Does anyone have any ideas they can share on how you do them? In the

to hear how you fit them in with teaching the comprehension stratgies,

[MOSAIC] Independent Reading

2009-08-07 Thread Tiffanie Laforet

My name is Tiffanie Laforet and I am a student at Wayne State University. I am
about to start my full time student teaching in September in a kindergarten
classroom. I believe strongly in independent reading and I hope that my
cooperating teacher does as well. What would be the most effective way of
introducing this time to the students? Are there any follow up activities I
should be doing with them? How should that time be organized?

Tony Stead's book Good Choice is excellent for setting up independent reading
in Kindergarten. His ideas could be used for all grades. He is very explicit on
activities. The book is an excellent resource.

[MOSAIC] Reading for comprehension

Hello, I am currently an elementary education student and I will be doing my

had any suggestions or literature on how to motivate students to read for

Re: [MOSAIC] Author Studies

2009-08-07 Thread SooZQ55164
In the past I have had my 4th grade students conduct an author study on an
author of their choice. It is mostly an independent project done as
homework. We start in January and the project concludes in June. The students
must
read 4 books written by their author to read and respond differently to,
they research and write a short biography of their author (done in school),
write a letter to their author (school) and then create a poster (HW)and a
short reflection (hw) about what they've learned about their author's
craft. I use Patricia Polacco books to model the process in school. I try to
have the responses mirror a response that we are working on in class so they
have responded in this way before. Last year the students wrote a character
change paper, a book review, a poem and made a picture book for their
responses. They love it and when they get mail from their authors it send them
over the edge they are so jazzed up! We have a celebration at the end of the
year to celebrate all their hard work! We touch on different genres of
writing and have great discussions.

Jerry Spinelli and Patricia Reilly Giff are two that I have used. We used them
when we were studying theme and main idea. I would mix groups every few days
and have them compare the themes they were finding in their books and support
their findings with evidence from their text. The groups would often find
similar themes in the different books they were reading. Spinelli was good in
the middle of the year - many of his books revolve around being true to
yourself...a difficult thing for fifth graders around that time of year.

Re: [MOSAIC] Reading Buddies

2009-08-07 Thread Renee
When I taught Kindergarten, we had 5th grade reading buddies. We did
this in the K classroom and had the K student choose the book. Their
teacher and I set some guidelines:

- both "buddies" must be holding the book between them (we had them sit
on the floor)
- the 5th student was to read to the K, then if the K student could
read, that was ok too
- the 5th student was to ask the K questions about the story (or the
subject, if it was non-fiction)

To help the 5th students out, we had a list of very "generic" questions
that could not have "yes" or "no" answers. We laminated these on
colored card stock and handed them out when they arrived in our
classroom.

We read Natalie Babbitt and combine it with the comprehension strategy of
synthesizing. We do this near the end of the year, after we have focused on the
other strategies. We notice how our understanding of Babbitt as a writer
changes as we read a second book. We analyze her writing style and focus on how
understanding her writing styles helps us grow as readers (and writers). We
read Tuck Everlasting and The Eyes of the Amaryllis. Title for lower levels are

[MOSAIC] Silent Sustained Reading

2009-08-07 Thread Amber Marie Daniels
Hello everyone,

My name is Amber Daniels and I am a senior at Wayne State University, majoring
in Elementary Science. Going back to the discussion about SSR, how can we
effectively monitor students to ensure that they are reading? Just because
students are looking at pages, and even turning them, doesn't mean that they
are reading them. And is it really fair to force students to sit and read
quietly if they sincerely struggle with it or genuinely don't like it? I'm an
adult and don't read for enjoyment, only necessity. I have had the pleasure of
enjoying a good book (that I was forced to read) but just don't enjoy reading.
Also, when I read, I can only do it with some type of background noise. What
are your thoughts?

You monitor students through conferences with them. It is extremely
effective since you get one on one teaching time with them. How much experience

did you have with SSR in your elementary career? SSR is often considered one
of the best ways to get kids to love reading. You give them choice, and
uninterrupted time to enjoy reading.

As for needing background noise, there was some interesting research done
by Marie Carbo. It isn't new, but it is about reading styles. That some of
us need low light others need bright light. Some of us need absolute quiet,
others need background noise. Some want to lay down to read (like me---I
read in bed) and others like to sit at a desk. As much as I can, I try to
accommodate kids needs. We are all different. I can't help wondering if you'd
have learned to like reading more if your reading styles were accommodated
along the way.

While a certain leap of faith needs to be made (how do I know you are really
reading and not turning pages), so many of your concerns can be addressed
through conferences. Honest conversations, formal and informal, combined with
some sort of reading log and an occasional response can go a long, long way
towards satisfying your need to document (an understandable and recognizable
need).

Re: [MOSAIC] Silent Sustained Reading

2009-08-07 Thread Stewart, L
"And is it really fair to force students to sit and read quietly if they
sincerely struggle with it or genuinely don't like it?"
Amber,
You can approach SSR non-traditionally. Once you get to know your children and
their reading styles, you can pair those who struggle with a stronger student
who loves to read aloud or you can pair two struggling readers together with a
book of funny poems. I have yet to encounter a student who didn't enjoy a good
story. You can also find books on the struggling reader's level or let that
child read with you. There are many ways to bring "reading" for pure enjoyment
to your students. I do play music in my classroom during this time but I
allow kids to read in the hallway away from the music or in the corner library
in our room which is buffered by bookcases and a quieter spot. If someone had
offered you a wonderfully written and illustrated science picture book would
you have enjoyed reading that without being forced? Just curious.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Silent Sustained Reading

Thank You,

Amber

It would be inspirational to you, I think, Amber, to read The Reading Zone
by Nancie Atwell. It's not a long book and it might open up a world of
opportunities to you.
