Kathy--please tell me how to get ahold of the Choice Literacy newsletter.
Thanks, all, for all of the ideas.  Please keep them coming.

How about trying Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop with them. An
excellent resource are books by Lucy Calkins, Leah Mermelstein, and
Kathy Collins. The Choice Literacy newsletter is also an excellent
source of info and sharing by educational colleagues. Sounds like these
kids would be able to fly with some targeted modeling and mentor texts.

[MOSAIC] advanced kinders

2009-09-23 Thread B G
Does anyone have any ideas for working with 2 advanced Kindergartners who are
able to read end of 1st grade level according to the DRA?  Our classroom
reading progam is Macmillan Treasures which teaches a lot of phonics in
Kindergarten.  These children don't need this and must be bored sitting through
this although teachers also include quite a bit of literature. We are looking
for some things these 2 girls could do more independently while the other
children are learning letters and sounds. We do have a TAG teacher but 1/2 hour
once a week will just be enough time to get them started on something.  Any
ideas out there?

Hi Everyone,

I attend Major League Baseball's Fan Fest in St. Louis about a month ago and
was fortunate to receive a copy of Sharon Robinson's new book about her dad
called Testing the Ice.  It is a great book for inference.  The book comes
out in October.  Don't forget to check it out!

I've ordered, but not yet received, a book I couldn't resist.  It sounds
fascinating.  Here's a link:

so much for the highlights from your notes...some really good points there.
I think that conversation is the most neglected area in comprehension
instruction. I find that when I jump too quickly into pencil and paper work,
whether it's reading or writing, my students just don't do as well. I am
most curious about the question she asked about teaching strategies to kids
that are not developmentally appropriate. Did she elaborate her thinking on
that? It is a question I have wondered from time to time, but then I pick up
Reading With Meaning (with all those 1st graders) and figure it's just me!
It sounds like it was a tremendous convention! Thanks again for sharing,
 Lisa

[MOSAIC] persuasive writing

2007-10-09 Thread B G
We are going to be doing some persuasive writing in both 2nd and 3rd grade. I
am wondering now if anyone can recommend any picture books that have a theme of
persuading or even a section of the book being about a character trying to
persuade another character to go along with his opinion. I have Because of
Winn-Dixie and will use the part where Opal is persuading her father, the
preacher, to keep the dog she found in the store. Any other ideas out there?
Thanks in advance. Barb

[MOSAIC] prediction

2007-10-03 Thread B G
Thank you for all the suggestions for good books for predictions. I have been
reading them and loving them. I love the mood of The Widow's Broom, but I
didn't understand the end. If the witch had painted it white, why did the
middle part of the story say that it went up in flames and turned to ashes. I
don't get it. What am I missing??

[MOSAIC] prediction

2007-09-29 Thread B G
Does anyone have titles of good picture books to teach predicting and
confirming or changing predictions for primary grades (grade 2) I do know that
almost any story can be used for this but I was looking in particular for short
books in which some predictions would not turn out as expected-that is, I don't
want everything to be so predictable. Thanks in advance.
