Re: [MOSAIC] Invitation to new Kindergarten Comprehension List!
I've tried signing up for the Kindergarten focused list and have not been able to yet. Is anyone else having difficulty? Or do we need to wait for the group to be up and running first? Thanks Deb (SpEd in IL) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: New Kindergarten Focused List We are going be starting a new list with focus on Kindergarten issues. Rosie, What basal are you required to use? We are requied to teach a 90 minute literacy block. 30-40 minutes of whole group instruction with a 60 minute rotation for stations and small group instruction. We are NOT permitted to teach any other curriculum during this time and cannot have students engage in writing activities unless it is in direct response to something they read. We MUST teach from the basal in the order dictated by the county. My question is...we are supposed to be differentiating the stations for four levels of abilities. I know that we aren't doing this correctly and sometimes not at all. How do we go about doing this? We get very little common plannig time as a grade level. Our grade level chair is expereinced with 20+ years of teaching, but the rest of us have little experience. I have looked at several great books but many of them assume you get to choose the curriculum or can integrate other subjects into the literacy block. I am truly at a loss as to what to do. There is no additional adult with me during this time. I have about five low readers, and the rest of the class is average or slightly above. HELP!!! I feel like I am about to loose my mind. Re: [MOSAIC] Dibbels Assessments
We Dibel at their grade level for the 3 benchmarks (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Depending on the student's fluency rate (my cut off chart is at school), we progress monitor at their reading level. We progress monitor every 2 weeks. Progress monitoring is only 1 one minute passage every 2 weeks. An average student (not special ed) should gain about 50 words per minute per year, I think. I can check on Tuesday when we go back. Re: [MOSAIC] Dyslexia
I am a special education teacher. Another way I have explained this parents is to use a block cut out letter (we have an Ellison die cut machine) of the letter b - flip the letter over to the right and it is a d - flip the letter over again to the bottom and it is a q - flip it over again to the left and it is a p. Some teachers stress the b/d confusion using the word bed - this one is hard to write - if you use your hands to make a letter b with the left hand and a d with the right hand and hold them together, you have a bed with a headboard and a footboard. Most of my children did not get this one because the concept of headboard and footboard is unknown to them. There is a program called Recipe for Reading that uses a picture of a bat and ball for the letter b and a drum and drumstick for the letter d. I have placed the b picture on the left corner of the student's desk and the d picture on the right corner. There is another saying b before c when looking at an abc chart. Personally, I use many hands-on activities using tactile items - for example tracing with your finger a sandpaper letter, cutting the letter of out needle point plastic canvas and have the students place a piece of paper over it and rub with a crayon, using shaving cream or pudding to write the letter in. Handwriting without Tears has specific language for teaching the formation of letters to reduce reversals. Also effective. It is important when talking with parents of these young children, who often raise the concern regarding reversals, to acknowledge their concerns. Elisa is so right about responding to parental concern without undo panic and Renee has a great idea to show parents how natural it is for young children to the p-b-q-d thing. Letting them know it is not uncommon, is age appropriate and that you are aware of the reversals and willing to address them is important. Hi Kathleen, Reversing letters is very common and natural until somewhere around third grade. When parents ask, I do this: I stand their child up in front of them, facing one side. I say, Here is your child. Then I turn the child around facing the other way and say, Look! It's still your child! and then I explain that for some children they may just not be seeing the difference yet between facing one way and facing another way. Makes sense to me, anyhow! Re: [MOSAIC] suggestions for commercial phonics/decoding games
I love my laminator from Sam's as well. I purchase the 8 1/2 X11 pouches from Sam's but I purchase 8 1/2 x 14 and small menu size 12 x 18 for my file folders from a company that gives you a third box free when you purchase 2 boxes of the same size. I'm not sure the list will allow the name of the company but you can do a Google search for it. I LOVE it. The laminating material is a little thicker, which makes it more durable. I also don't have to spend the extra hours standing in front of the laminator at school. I can do it at home sitting and watching television. I think it is one of the best moves I have made. Just a thought. If you are speaking of Direct Instruction Fast Track - it is specifically designed for 1st and 2nd I thought. I have used this in other districts I have been in.
