[MOSAIC] Professionalism

2009-06-18 Thread Stephanie Perry
Hello everyone,
I have a side question for everyone. I know that at every school you can
find at least one more more teachers that say come the end of the year that
they are not going to have anything to do with teaching all summer. I am
really curious as to how many teachers in your school, to your knowledge,
actually take it upon themselves to do their own professional development.
This can be in the form of reading, classes, or workshops.

What percentage of teachers at your school actually do this?

Thanks,
Stephanie

Re: [MOSAIC] TRENDS and ISSUES In Literacy Pedagogy

I recommend Bring Words to Life by Isabel Beck over Marzano's. Her book not
only gives the research but it provides things that you can use in your
classroom immediately.

Robert Marzano is wonderful for academic vocabulary. As a literacy coach I
did district wide staff development (3, 3 hour sessions) using his Building
Academic Background Knowledge work. He did some work in conjunction with
Stanford University and a brain researcher. He has DVDs, one that explains
the research and a rep from Stanford (can not remember the name and it is
probably some big shot) and the brain guy both speak on it. It gives the
WHY we should teach academic vocab. There is also another DVD that has the
6 step process for teaching vocabulary.
There is a book too -paperback 8 1/2 x 11. I believe the DVDs are quite
pricey -they come together. They are published by ASDC (Association for
 Supervision and Curriculum Development).

Re: [MOSAIC] reading tests

2009-03-11 Thread Stephanie Perry
I also teach in California with most of my class being ELL's. What I
have found is that most grasped the strategy work we did, they did not
transfer the skills because they didn't understand the test language.
With ELL's, you should show them how the question will be asked on the
test, relate that question with your strategy work, and teach the test
vocab (i.e. Words like passage, statement, evidence). I highly
recommend using the STAR released test questions at cde.ca.gov. They
can help to show those first year test takers what to expect. Hope
that helps!

principal is really anxious for the students to pass the Calif. state test
in the spring (yes, we test 2nd graders...go figure).  I guess I'm looking
for encouragement  because I know you're all positive thinkers.  I'm trying
to decide what to do with the info.  I spend time on comprehension
strategies...predicting, visualizing, etc. but maybe I need to change my
focus.  They are improving in the comprehension area.  Ok, help!!!

You should also try donorschoose.com. You can put up a proposal up there and
random people will give towards it.

Hi. I'm writing a grant for picture books for the different
strategies. I'd like to have a decent amount of these books in my
classroom library so that the students may read them too. Do you
know what picture books would be appropriate for second graders to
read independently? I'm getting my list from the documents on the
tools page, and the recommendations from RWM.

 Thanks for your help!

Re: [MOSAIC] Education Student Question

2008-08-10 Thread Stephanie Perry
I used a strategy called roll em. I assign my table groups a number . Then
each person within each group gets numbered. Then I roll the dice. One dice
represents the table number and the other dice represents the person within
that group. So if I roll 2 dice and I roll and 5 and a 3. Then person 3 in
group 5 must answer the question. My kids love it because they think its a
mini game. It teaches them that anyone could be called on not just the
typical ones that raise their hands. Also, I always do a think-pair-share or
turn-and-talk right before this. In the beginning of the year, I emphasize
that this turn-and-talk or think-pair-share time is really a good time to
get the answer if they didn't really know if before. If they don't know the
answer, they listen a lot more to their partner because they may be rolled.

the other students time to think about the question and process the
