[MOSAIC] [OT] 5th grade word study
I have a question for the group as I make the transition from teaching 2nd grade to teaching fifth grade this fall. It is OT (off topic) of reading strategies, but IS a part of balanced literacy. (I would appreciate emails off list in response.) I knew that you all are such wonderful educators, I couldn't dream of going somewhere else to find answers. :-) I'm not sure how word study is going to fit yet into my 2 hour reading/language arts block and I'm not sure what material to use. What do you all suggest? I'm interested in Patricia Cunningham's month by month phonics (and I see they have a newer version now, http://www.carsondellosa.com/cd2/Products/ProductView.aspx?id=104242keyword =month+by+month+phonicsoid=736). Has anyone used this resource? Sorry, I couldn't pass up the chance to ask THIS group an OT question! Re: [MOSAIC] [OT] 5th grade word study
I have not taught at this level but I could not fit word study into workshop at the second grade level. Instead I used my morning message to reinforce word study and found 3 30-minute blocks--you know the sort, in odd places where we were coming and going--and used these blocks for word study. Making Words once a week and then two days of center rotations (four stations) with open ended but familiar activities where the focus on the 'big word', the weekly word wall words and reviewd chunks remained constant. I'm not sure how word study is going to fit yet into my 2 hour reading/language arts block and I'm not sure what material to use. What do you all suggest? I have the highest respect for Rebecca Sitton's spelling program sold by Curriculum Associates. Several of my colleagues have also been to her professional development workshops and said they are amazing. I love it, although, again, it's most effective when it's used K-5, not in a single room. However, it's still got merit if only for one grade. Re: [MOSAIC] [OT] 5th grade word study
Hi, I love Word Journey's by Kathy Ganske. The program is all contained and explained in her book. With some careful reading, it's pretty easy to implement. The students are tested and placed into appropriate levels so each child gets what they need. I've seen dramatic improvement in spelling since using the program. I even feel that it has benefited the kids in reading and writing as well. I've used it for two years. Our district adpoted the program officially this year. Other districts in the area are also now using it. Good luck in finding a program.
